Nokia serves North American X6 up for pre-order: $455 unlocked
Nokia's downright seductive X6 just started shipping to those across the pond, and shortly after the company announced a Comes Without Music edition, along comes this: a NAM version for those who call North America home, sweet home. The pre-order page (which is live this very moment, by the way) makes no mention of a Comes With Music requirement, giving you complete freedom to shove whatever you darn well please onto what's left of that 16GB after the OS install and a hidden 'thank you' note from Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. So, is that $455 peeking out of your Fifth Pocket really that important to you?

I want to see the X10! *pouty face*
@ElCapitan - whats this running? Symbian BCE dedition. Bawhawhahwhawwaa
@ElCapitan and i wish they make it thinner, they can, they just have to get themselves to it!
But will it run windows phone 7 series?
@broli
downranked for stupidity...
@oldpass56 ^^^ up-ranked for psychic abilities
now that they've already announed symbian^3, why would anyone in the US get this? Nokia's marketshare in mid-range/high-end phones is so minuscule here that the only people who'd even know the existence of this phone (which are outside of carrier contracts) are people who already know that S60 v5 is being phased out.
@aniym the screen is also too small for this type of phone. 3.2" was the norm around summer 2009, when this was announced, but the competition has rapidly moved on to 3.5-3.7" screens, which make a noticeable difference for websurfing and soft-keyboard ease of use.
@aniym: Exactly, plus the 32GB version has had lukewarm reviews for the most part. $455 for this, when Symbian 3 will be out at the end of the year? Sorry Nokia, but I will pass on this one.
@aubreyq
S^3 will run the same apps, and this phone will probably settle near $369 after a coule months UNLOCKED! And this is their midrange line, so the specs should wow you compared to the Eris, Pixie, iPhone 3G, and BB Storm. And don't forget the capacitive screen, class leading and legendary Carl Zeiss camera with flash, large memory, and free Ovi Maps with turn by turn.
Anything competitive would cost $125 more. And don't be surprised to see this on TMobile later this year, along with all the other Symbian phones they and at&t will be carrying.
AND TV-out!
@christexaport: Well the price is the kicker, isn't it? Anyway, this thing has to be able to perform, not just be tricked out. Nokia's been going through issues getting software to work nicely right out of the gate (see N97).
@aniym The X6 is the first in a new range of Nokia multimedia phones that effortlessly blend the best bits of high-end feature phones with the social connectivity and touchscreen goodness of the latest smartphones. The Nokia X6 is, in other words, a cracking music phone with a glorious touchscreen interface, great social apps and high quality features such as a 5 megapixel camera. @rizacerns
Do you work for Nokia marketing?
@aniym I think I'd buy this phone just to do Ovi Maps Racing. And I don't want a phone bigger than this one. And an acceptable camera. I think I just might suffer through Symbian^whatever again to get all that.
@aniym Eh... But I'd rather have phones varying in size. Just speaking for myself, I'd like a phone that isn't quite as big as say, the Droid. I think that 3.2in screens aren't so small so that it'd hinder web surfing and typing that much depending on how a company implements it. The 5800 and 5530both have a 3.2in screen and the reviews I read indicated that the keyboard was actually good. My problem would be more with the software as indicated.
@aniym
agreed thats like buying an iphone the first week in june "YOU KNOW NEW SHIT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!!"
Nice. Price is reasonable and I'd rather have this phone then allot of the middle of the road smart phones offered by LG and Samsung. Good job Nokia, now just get Symbian^3 our way this year as well and I will be happy
No one in North America is going to pay $500 for this featurephone
@good grief - for goodness sake - this is not feature phone. It is a smartphone. There is a lots of applications for Symbian, it's just Nokia that wasn't so greedy to channel everything though an appstore and make money on that. Also, Symbian can multitask - iPhone can not do that.
Another thing - tethering with Symbian is a no-brianer. There is an app called JoikuSpot which turns your Nokia into a WiFi hotspot and it can run in the background. Take that Nokia haters.
@good grief This is a smartphone.
@stoffer yea the iphone doesn't multitask but IRM, android, WM and WebOs do. so why get a nokia when you have all these other options. as far as tethering the palm pre from verizon tethers straight out of the box, no app required.
@hs2716 Do they have free navigation for 70 countries?
@hs2716 How about "Why get any of those when you have Nokia"? It's called choice. Symbian also allows for tethering ootb, JoikuSpot just makes it sweeter by creating an actual WiFi hotspot.
@hs2716
ever compared the multitasking between the two? Symbian runs more apps on similar hardware than the others at once reliably, never crashes, and is fast switching between apps. Running Symbian with the free JBak Taskman is the fastest task switching smartphone experience available outside of Maemo.
Keep in mind, these arent the lame CSS, Javascript, HTML apps of Web OS, or the Java jokes of Blackberries, but powerful C++, Python, Ruby, Qt, etc. powered apps worthy of a desktop! And its stable, unlike WinMo.
Don't forget the Flash enabled browser, choice of alternative browsers, and freedom from being told what services to use. Try that on a Pre, BB, or other handset...
@christexaport
I love Nokia, and my N900, but you are the biggest Nokia Fanboy on the planet.
@WickedEast I think google has navigation for a few countries. It is not really a concern for me since I only drive in the US and I get free navigation on my palm pre. If that's a big factor in your mobile device purchase then maybe nokia is right for you. just remember that you are paying a very high price for navigation, more than it costs to buy a navigation app on any other device.
@christexaport I don't agree with most of you said. first, multitasking on the pre is much smoother and faster. search engadget for a vedio of the pre running 50+ apps at once. second, I dont understand how you say it never crashes. I had nokias since 1998 and every N series device I had required a restart every couple of day to clean up the memory and run faster. My memory of the last 2 years of my nokia experience is all maintnace. I spent 50% of my time on the phone maintaining it. let me ask you this, how much time do you spend each month maintaing your nokia device?
and third have you heard of the iphone? don't tell me nokias apps are more powerful than the iphone's...plz
@stoffer
And don't forgot, toss your sim card in this, and it auto configures the APN's.
@stoffer I love my E71-2 NAM, with it's small size, insane reception and battery life, and $10/mo data with JoikuSpot, BUT the software is wayy too long in the tooth. I'd much rather be running WM6.1 or something. It takes 8 gazillion clicks to do anything, and is nearly impossible to find certain menus and options.
All that being said, my E71 is heading into month 8, and it has a long life ahead of it. It's a lot cheaper than anything AT&T has to offer, and I just can't give up wifi tethering for my iPod and Macbook.
@hs2716 Ok, he wil not be telling you that Nokias apps are far more powerful, but I will. Because they are.
In fact, iPhone is laughable when used in a corporate environment. You know, where you actually have to do work...
Nokia's first capacitive touch screen phone
Seems like a fair price if you don't mind Symbian.
It also allows you to play all types of audio/video files without converting or jailbreaking, for example.
No keyboard = no sale for me, it doesn't feel natural using a touchscreen to type long text messages and i have tried it with different phones. Why is it now a requirement to have unlimited data on smartphones for at&t? I want a smartphone but my college has wifi in every building, i have wifi at home and I dont do nothing outside texting but i could use the internet on my wifi, i don't want to be forced to pay for data, what can i do?
@madmac
Thanks dude, something is really wrong with the telecommunications industry in this country. It is so overpriced. I pay $75 a month for texting and 450 mins on at&t! Is tmobile a good service?
@Mike Vick
Use Prepaid. All smartphones work on prepaid and there is no data requirement but you can buy data plans if you like.
@Mike Vick: I have AT&T and bought my 5530 unlocked from Costco. I use Wi-Fi at work and Wi-Fi at home. I haven't had to put a data plan on it.
@aubreyq : I should have said Costco.com instead of Costco.
@aubreyq
I will consider it, they told me any smartphone on their network must have an unlimited data plan. I am considering tmobile since i live in nyc and dont really travel too much but how good is tmobile in other states?
@aubreyq
U r AT&T is in the progress of making unlocked phones have data plans.
@DallasB I doubt that AT&T can force a data plan on an unlocked phone they didn't sell to you. Come back next year and see if they did anything.
@DallasB Actually, they are only able to do this if you have an unlocked phone that is similar to a phone they carry. I.E. if you have an unlocked Blackberry Bold 9700 or Nokia E71x. The IMEI's are similar and they know what you are using. From what I'm hearing, those of us with Nokia smartphones, and European models of unlocked phones are not being forced on the higher data plans. I have the N97 mini on AT&T with NO data plan at all actually. However, those using the $15 a mo. unlimited plans are being forced onto the $30 dollar plans. However, as mentioned above, it depends on what unlocked equipment you are using. If they force me on a higher data plan, I'll just tell them to kiss my @zz and move on over to tmobile. I love not having a contract!!
Why is it that when nokia comes out with bad ass phone no carrier( AT&T or T-mobile) picks it up all nokia phones that are great phones only come in GSM but no we have to pay 400 and up to get that's bullshit.
@DallasB
The X10 is heading to AT&T in the next couple of months. I've seen it reported to be $199 on contract. It runs on Android though and not Symbian.
@DJ Megatron
:facepalm:
Nokia X10 is not SE X10
@DallasB
The telcos arent giving you free phones, you are paying them with your larger phonebills.
@newone
What does paying a largering phone bill have to do with gsm carriers not getting good phones from nokia. When all we get is flip phones and non touch screens.
grow up buddies. its a unlocked phone and has materials richer than any iphone. u can tether and have a mobile broadband for 10 bucks a month. ovi has a lot of free feature for syncing. And more that they have a lot of research put into each and every part of the phone unlike foxcon or htc which make phone like in a cottage industry.
Is probably gonna drop to $300 soon.
Over 400 bucks for a Symbian device?
