Sony shuffles gaming organizations: so long, SCE, hello new SCE
We're not exactly sure what Sir Stringer is up to with this one, but Sony has now announced a reorganization plan for its gaming-related divisions that should make a few heads spin but ultimately end up with most employees staying where they are. The short of it is that Sony Computer Entertainment will be renamed the "SNE Platform" (or SNEP, for added hilarity), and that Sony's video game business (previously part of SCE) will be transferred to a new division called -- you guessed it -- Sony Computer Entertainment. SNEP will then be responsible for Sony's network business (including PSN, it seems), but only until April 1st, at which point SNEP will simply be dissolved into Sony. The goal of all this, according to Sony, is to "strengthen the network business within the Sony Group," but the company is otherwise staying pretty mum on specifics.

So basically nothing has happened
@sonicfury
a whole lot of nothing
@sonicfury It takes PSN out of the hands of SCE and puts it directly into Sony Group. I'm guessing the other content divisions weren't happy having to go through SCE to get something on PSN sorted...
@sonicfury
More potential PSN content happened.
@sonicfury
Wait, I think they released an ATRAC Store SDK...
Anyone else notice that SNEP backwards is PENS or Pee Nus?
i'm confused =s
Translation = "After the merger, division XYZ will be seen as profitable."
At a large company I once worked, we called it "re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic..."
@jammastercd, Haha you remind me of Steve Jobs quoting Gil Amelio: "Apple is like a ship with a hole in the bottom, leaking water, and my job is to get the ship pointed in the right direction." .. funny stuff
That makes no sense.
@Prevacator
To consumers, no it makes no sense. Business wise, it makes plenty of sense.
... Uh... Congratulations??...?
SO this won't make any difference to my COD MW2 playing..
The article mentions APRIL 1ST. Is that significant?
@TechGuru Very well could, great point
@TechGuru Beginning of new fiscal quarter, probably not an april fool's joke.
@TechGuru Start of Sony's financial year.
What this means, is that the PSN will be a bigger portal for Sony's media products movies and music overall. Better intercommunication between company divisions which will mean better synergy.
MEH! WHERE IS THE PSP PHONE ALREADY?! Yea keep sitting on the sideline wile Apple encroaches into your portable gaming space and Microsoft's WP7 integrates Zune and Xbox live features. You and Ericsson have become incredibly lazy and innovation-less in the face of this onslaught!
And what ever happened to AIBO? At this point I should have been versing my Bluetooth enabled Robot dog in CoD MW2 on the PS3 (as he chuckles Astro Jetson style when he wins. YOU DROP THE BALL HS, hard too...
@Frankenstein Black I can already play PS1 games via dl and remote play on a PSP...been doing it for over a year. I can also stream movies and music from my PS3 or computer through the PS3 to my PSP. With Location free I can watch TV on my PSP....in Japan and EU I can use GPS...or use my PSP as a PVR.
As for AIBO...it was dropped along time ago. Not many wanted to pay the $2000 kennel fee.
You seem to be discounting what SONY has done in the portable market well before any of the new comers.
@Frankenstein Black
PSP phone vs Android = fail. -1
(Ericsson = slow) = win. +1
It's a wash. Your internets remain untouched.
Better integration and unification of Sony and its subsidaries is key, a good move imo.
Now before they spread PSN across their devices they need to mature the service on PS3/PSP, because while it is very nice (and my personal favourite console), PSN on PS3 lacks integration and unification within itself...
Sony's current network team are awfully slow and have paniced a bit too, chucking a few features and applications in that don't quite merge together; it's got multiple personalities so to speak.
Let's hope this change around helps things out.
It seems to me that Sony will be like this now:
1: Content & Network
2: Playstation Hardware & Software
3: Consumer Hardware
4: Industry Hardware
5: General Software
OH SNAP!
*SNEP
OBJECTION!
