Adobe taking a pass on Flash 10.1 for WinMo 6.5, will go straight to 7
An Adobe employee over in the company's official forums dropped a bomb earlier this month that they've now decided to pass on releasing Flash 10.1 for Windows Mobile 6.5, instead moving straight to 7. The official explanation is that "WinMo6.5 does not support some of the critical APIs that we need," but frankly, this sounds like a load of crap -- since the project was announced last year, there's no way it took them this long to figure out that an official cut for 6.5 wouldn't be technically possible. If we had to guess, the real justification also explains why Adobe has been so quiet on the matter: 6.5's now viewed as a dead-end platform since 7 represents a clean break for Microsoft, and the company feels like it can't be bothered to invest the necessary time, energy, and money to see the project through. In all likelihood, Adobe was briefed on 7 prior to its official announcement at MWC, and that's when the decision was made. Of course, that's all pure speculation on our part -- but regardless, don't get your hopes up, HD2 owners (unless you get an upgrade, that is).

Lammmeee Excuse!
Looks like the iPhone will still be the ONLY smartphone on the market without already support for Flash, or that will receive Flash support in the future.
Way to fail Apple. Way to fail.
@Prevacator And yet I'm sure Steve is taking a swim right now in his cash filled pool. That's what you get when your company fails...
@Prevacator Other than 6.5 devices of course, but then you'd know that if you read the article.
@Jacob1 Windows Mobile 6.5 has Flash Lite I believe.
@Dale P
WinMo has real flash. I use it all the time. Thank you XDA.
It's February. WinMo7 is supposed to be out by "Holiday 2010". That's about November. That's an awfully long time to get Flash on WinMo.
I wonder if it will be available for Symbian^3 devices when they are released or some time after that.
Ha ha ha!! I see nothing has changed in the world of windows moblie...
Of course Adobe would do that... because Microsoft wants it so. If they only provide Flash for the new WinMo 7 people will be more likely to buy a new handset with the new os and flash, instead of sticking with their old one. Money, money, money! Microsoft is happy, the phone manufactures are happy and the carriers are happy. Just not our wallets :(
Come one, there's no proof at all that the dude is an Adobe Employee Sounds like FUD (and the date of the post is Feb 5, 10 days before the WP7 announcement). And Adobe even posted a video of the HTC HD2 running Flash 10.1 on Feb 15th: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/industry-trends/htc-hd2-and-nexus-one/
@JudgeDredd
So they were more than halfway there, and decided to cut flash for winmo 6.5. Thats just lazy, especially because winmo 7 won't be out for awhile, and the HD2 is a great phone. It looks like their having a hard time finishing what they started.
"Adobe taking the piss with Flash 10.1" more like...
@iNeko
I love that expression
I guess steve jobs was right?
Wow, there's a first time for everything :P
Think about it -- it's a fucking plug-in -- that THEY created, and own, and have the full source to.
How hard is it to make a PLUG IN? Yeah, it's on ARM platform -- so what? People have coded entire operating systems in the time Adobe is taking to release -- A PLUG-IN; with less people, and less money. Sounds lazy to me.
I`m not an apple fanboy, but this time I will agree with Steve that Adobe is lazy....what`s next, pulling the string on flash 10.1 for N900 because of Meego?....lazy faks!
Another bs from Adobe. Their own demo showing beta running fine on HD2 with WM 6.5. Idiots...
no Flash on current iPhone = Apple fails
no Flash on current WinMo = Adobe fails
interesting.
If HD2 doesn't get a Win 7 Upgrade, I'm switching to whatever chocolate bar running Win 7. I'm also getting sick of the stupid capacitive screen, that everybody seems to love around here. It's a piece of shit!
@loocas
"I'm also getting sick of the stupid capacitive screen, that everybody seems to love around here. It's a piece of shit!"
Lol your weird.
@Mrtoocool Do you actually have a HD2? The capacitive display is the worst part of the device. What for? So I can fuckin pinch to zoom in/out on a photo? Jesus! I can just double tap if I need an instant zoom. That's what I actually do. Other than that, it's just a gimmick! And due to that it's overly-sensitive and super-confused at times, especially when typing. I press a "P" and suddenly the virtual keyboard gets all fucked up and starts highlighting, randomly, all other letters until I let go and the last one highlighted gets written! This annoys me so fuckin much I'd consider switching the phone for a Nokia! Yes, it's that bad! Besides if I ever wanted an iPhone, I'd buy one! But now, I want a WinMo phone, with a gorgeous screen, with all the apps I need/want and, if it's not too much to ask, a phone that actually WORKS!
I think flash running on a phone is over rated. The reality I found on my old Nokia N800 (Flash capable internet tablet) was that weak CPU plus, relatively speaking, weak broadband internet (EVDO via bluetooth DUN to hacked treo) equals poor experience. It was okay for situations where I really needed info off a site that used flash, but it was not something I used otherwise. Actually, it sucked until I got the Adbock plugin installed on the N800. Flash-based ads absolutely wreck phone-based web browsing. I actually would rather not have flash on my winmo 6.5 phone and use server-rendered browser like skyfire, etc.,.. for the few times I need info off a flash based site.
And as long as where talking about Adobe.. ADOBE! Please fix the ^@%^% bugs in the flash player plugins that keep crashing Firefox and Chrome. grrr...
@thornd7
I find the same thing. On my HD2 if I ever find a page that I need flash to operate, I just copy the URL from opera into IE or Skyfire (which have basic flash support) and do it that way. Can't say it happens very often though.
BETA IN OCTOBER??????????????????????
Didn't they say first half of 2010?????????????
ADOBE FAIL ONCE AGAIN
@Johnny Rockets
Dude I gave up on that, we'll never see flash on mobile devices anytime soon.
Cried wolf 10 to many times Adobe. I'm expecting HTML5 in wide deployment before anything anybody buzzes about gets past beta.
Flash sucks adobe sucks too.iPhone doesn't need crappy flash games .Steve jobs is right in banning flash from the iPhone .
@Ridgecity THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR FLASH TO COME OUT ON OUR BELOVED TOUCH PRO 2 FOR A YEAR. BEING TEASED WITH VIDEOS AND NOW YOU GIVE UP! WHAT IF EVERYONE GAVE UP! YOU SHOULD RECEIVE SOME INQUIRES FROM MICROSOFT SOON BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STOP BUYING APPS FROM THE MARKET PLACE UNTIL THEY CAN GET A WM7 PHONE, IF THEY EVEN DECIDE TO STAY WITH WINDOWS. AS SOON AS ANDROID COMES OUT WITH SLING PLAYER, IM JUMPING SHIP AND LEAVING ALTOGETHER AND I SUSPECT ALOT OF US WILL TOO. WM6.5 IS HERE TO STAY FOR THE LONG RUN! WE DON'T LIKE WP7 & IT'S RESTRICTIONS! SO PROVE TO US THAT YOUR NOT LAZY LIKE STEVE JOBS SAYS AND RELEASE IT, HELL RELEASE THE BETA LIKE ADOBE PROMISED FOR AT LEAST THE TOUCH PRO2 AND DIAMOND2 AND LET XDA OR PPCGEEKS DO YOUR HOMEWORK FOR YOU!
Haven't you notice how long it takes to patch critical holes in their software? Something tells me they might actually be that dumb there to take a year to realize that they couldn't do somthing.
