Nexus One coming to Vodafone UK in April, says Telegraph
Without citing its sources, the Telegraph is reporting matter-of-factly that the Nexus One will launch on Vodafone in April for a to-be-determined price, though it's "likely to be priced very similarly to comparable smartphones such as the iPhone." It's no secret that Vodafone's picking up Google's Snapdragon-powered beast -- but we've yet to lock it down to a 30-day window like this, so it's progress. Coincidentally, this is going to collide head-to-head with the European release of the Desire, HTC's remix of the Nexus One with Sense and an optical pad thrown in, so it'll be fascinating to see which of these monsters comes out on top at retail.[Thanks, Charles]

Googles pants are down on this one. This is going to be a lesson for them.
@TrumanHW
There's plenty of android love to go around.
@TrumanHW yes as are mine! ive been waiting for vodaphone!
@TrumanHW agreed
@TrumanHW
Everybody should wait for the HTC Desire instead ! It has been confirmed to have native DivX playback support and 720P video recording: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/02/25/htc-desire-to-receive-divx-playback-support-in-future-update/
@JudgeDredd
Still rather the Supersonic... Mumble mumble...
@JudgeDredd
"Everybody should wait for the HTC Desire instead ! It has been confirmed to have native DivX playback support and 720P video recording"
Wait? The supposed release date for the Desire on T-Mobile is Mid March.
@spruceyb
I HOPE SO! And.. I hope you mean state side! Or at least that "they" do.
@fpad77
no way, Desire is here first, i would have to wait a whole month to get the older phone..... i'll just put that into perspective, probably at least 2,678,400 seconds longer, ouch.
@TrumanHW
I meant in the UK, but seems like T-Mobile UK & Orange will have it out by April.
Hopefully it arrives in the US pretty soon too.
I've gotta wait till 11th June anyway, thats when my contracts due up for renewal.
And verizon, too.. according to the FuCC
And a lower price both on Verizon and Vodafone then T Mobile.. What! No.
Considering the nexus one isn't sold at retail...
The British carriers are so giddy about the iPhone at the moment that this is bound to go cheap, good news for me :)
@Lubing The Tube
Go cheap? You mean like the Pre on o2?
@pukerocket
O2 are using the Pre as their next iPhone after losing exclusivity. All other carriers are going head over heels about finally getting with Apple.
It's a shame because of the amount of amazing phones coming out.
Other than noise cancelling, what does the nexus one have that the desire doesn't?
Then when you look at it the other way around, the desire has an optical trackpad and Sense. Which in my opinion is a huge selling point.
Google might have had a better chance if the nexus one release in the US was a worldwide release. Right now, the competition will be killing.
Though I guess the nexus one can count on having any android updates first in line.
@BrightSilence I'd rather have N1 without sense...sense is fugly imo..if the desire comes to verizon ill be uber pissed...
@BrightSilence Google allows you to unlock the bootloader...which means you can flash a sense ROM on there at will. So, with the nexus, you have a choice between sense and vanilla android.
@A F 1 G 3
As far as I understood, Sense can be turned off if you wish, and you'd still get the optical track pad. Though I guess that gets rid of the biggest selling point. And then the price point becomes the biggest issue.
However, from playing with the HTC Hero, I really did fall in love with Sense. I guess it's a matter of taste.
@B3astofthe3ast
The same can likely be said about the Desire. I have a Hero and they allow you to turn Sense off if you want and just use vanilla Android. So technically, you get the best of both worlds with either phone. You just have to work a little harder with the N1. Personally, I like the idea of an optical trackpad better than noise canceling speakers.
But really, does it matter all that much? I think releasing both these phones around the same time is great idea for both Google and HTC. HTC made both phones, anyway. And of course the OS is Google's, so either way it's going to be a win for both, no matter which one sells better. In the end, it all comes down to marketing.
@BrightSilence
With the Nexus One you'll probably get OS updates much quicker than any Android phone with a custom UI. The Hero and the Cliq are still on 1.5, for crying out loud.
@B3astofthe3ast
surely it goes the other way also that you can flash the desire with pure Android, no?
Didn't Vodafone say a few short weeks back in January? hehe
It's gonna be a phone cannibalism!
I need this phone to come to Verizon in April. I almost can't stand it anymore, but then again, what are you gonna do..? Give me any variation of anything remotely close to N1 on Verizon and I am satisfied. Bells and whistles such as opti trackball and sense are gravy.
Whats new about this? Its been know to come to Voda since day1.
@dansus
Engadget answered your question *in* their summary. Because we didn't know what month it was going to be.
-Taylor
@Taylor Yes Taylor
Yes we did, it was April. As they said on day one and then Voda tried to be stupid and say it was 'weeks' when it was never going to be anything less than April.
And physical buttons! That is the biggest reason why I'd take the desire over the Nexus one, and its a big one for me!
That seems to get downplayed a lot around here. :-/
@Taylor Yes Taylor
I agree, the touch sensitive buttons on the nexus one got a lot of comments saying you tend to press them accidentally while typing in portrait mode. Hardware buttons solve that.
No Canadian love HTC?
The % of people who prefer unsubsidized phones is irrelevant. You HAVE to pay retail, but you can't have it same-day. And, as soon as a subsidized version shows up, who prefers the pay-now model? If so many did, Visa and MC wouldn't be doing as well as they do. And it seems clear that HTC doesn't have to back off (for long at least) before a subsidized version (and better) shows up. I like google, want them to do well, but expect them to have inventory of their commitment order for a long time.
Sweet go nexus one!
Good luck with the phone. If it's DOA, you have to go through HTC which has the worst RMA process ever (promises processes)!
@cdf74dc9
HTC turned my (dead) Nexus One round in 4 days from the UPS man picking it up. HTC UK support were superb for me.
@ChazClout
You have it in UK already? I thought that the only version that was out was the one for T-Mobile US, and that they used different bands from all the carriers in the UK.
@ChazClout
I've had a very bad experience with my N1 RMA here in the US. HTC didn't keep their word and try running in circle about the whole process. It's like one of those services from a bait and switch company. But I still have hope in my dead N1 and try to give it another try. If the next unit have problems then I'll wait til the end of the year for Winmo7 (yes, I can live without a phone).
@Dafrety
The N1 sold in the US fully supports 3G bands in the UK (2100MHz for 3G and 900/1800MHz).
@cdf74dc9
I've heard of the HTC US horror stories but thankfully, HTC UK seem to have their shit together!
http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/48718-htc-uk-support-repair-experiance.html (Mine and some elses accounts of UK support inm that thread).
And yet the AT&T version of the Nexus One, which supposedly went through the FCC almost a month ago, is still unannounced. I really wish T-Mobile would expand to my area.
@cairn
According to an article on BGR AT&T is getting the Nexus 1 and the Desire, with the Desire being available in stores. And that Sprint would be getting the Legend aka Hero 2.
It says that it's coming to Vodaphone on the actual website but I don't think they should. Atleast Orange or O2!
@BenRH
God no, not O2, their 3G/HSDPA coverage is still shockingly poor. I really regret moving from T-Mobile to O2 in terms of service, and actually in terms of phone since I went to O2 for an SE Xperia X1 which is falling apart after multiple repairs (shock).
@BenRH
Both O2 and Orange are getting the Desire in April...
Nexus one won't do well in the uk. IPhone and BB are far too dominant. When vodafone uk released iPhone in jan they sold 100,000 in the first week. The pre was barely noticed, majority of uk consumers have never even heard of it. Same thing will happen to the nexus one, it'll probs sell as badly as it has in the US lol. You guys need to get over this android obsession, it seems like it's only the geeky apple haters that like it!
@to86 Yeah, fo sho. Only those ugly apple hater geeks don't want an iPhone, because it's the best phone ever in all categories and doesn't have anything that could be made better.
Come on....
@Kopfgeldjaeger Now now, let's not put words into my mouths. All I'm saying is you Apple hating geeks need to come out of your bubble. The iPhone is about simplicity and user experience, and not about it's list of features. It appeals to the general consumer, which the android and winmo don't. You only need to look at the latest market share for evidence. Apple don't cater for the minority of geeks out there, and so everytime an apple product is announced they are devastated and so go into their little bubble and pretend to themselves that it's the worst product ever and anyone who likes it or buys it is a fanboy. Seriously it's time u snapped out of it and realised that just maybe apple products are doing well for a reason.
It will be interesting to see what price they sell the Nexus One for, or will they only offer it with a contract so the price is hidden? £350 would be a decent pay as you go price, considering the pricetag in the US.
It's a great phone, very solid, very fast, very nice big screen, doesn't drop calls, lots of apps, multitouch, voice to text input to all text fields, constantly being upgraded and finnessed by google, thinner and lighter than the iphone with a faster processor and bigger higher resolution screen, easy to access settings and customization, FLASH 5megapixel camera that works well in low light, fast focus and shutter, charges fast and good battery life, clear voice calls, Free turn by turn Navigation with spoken street names, and of course everybodies favorite, you talk and it will send a text with what you said.
finally! I've been waiting ages on some news on this. It will be pointless for me though if they price stupidly high like the iphone. Not much you can do though.
