Microsoft's Aaron Woodman just pulled off a little surprise here at The Engadget Show: he brought out LG's Windows Phone 7 Series pre-production prototype! The QWERTY slider is the first branded Windows Phone 7 Series device the world's ever seen, and while the hardware and software are both obviously early, we can tell you a few things about it: it's just a hair thicker than an iPhone or Nexus One, there are dedicated hardware camera, volume, and power buttons in addition to the back, home, and search buttons dictated by Windows Phone 7 Series, and we noticed a five megapixel camera with a flash on the back, along with a headphone jack. Can't say much apart from that right now, since things are so early and everything is subject to change, but things are certainly moving along. It's all going down on the show right now -- see it on video after the break!
Nice!
How is this by Nilay Patel, when the real Nilay Patel is at the show?
And secondly, Nilay Patel, please learn how to tie your tie. My personal favorite knot is the Kelvin, search for it.
@HowardtheDuck I don't know, it looks good for a phone NOW, but when it releases in 6 months (or more), those specs will be a little dated. The Nexus One has those specs and it came out in January. I hope this is going to stay a mule and not be a halo device.
@HowardtheDuck he literally pulled out his macbook during the show. not even joking.
@Student Driver
What specs are you referring to? the only detail they know is that is has a 5MP camera. For the rest, all we know is it has to meet microsoft's bare minimum requirements
@HowardtheDuck well, in a sense. i guess its nice/ it looks kind of to me like a rip of an htc phone.... but thats just me. although lg is ok
How about this Windows Phone 7 Series on the Dell Mini 5 they showed on the Live Show? Now that would be a Phone!
@SeNiLe911 Not really, that would be a small slate capable of making phone calls.
I definitely want a slider, as long as they can keep it relatively slim. You simply can't beat actual physical keys, and I much prefer texting to monopolizing someone's time over the phone.
@Sean Connery
I beg to disagree Sir : the only appropriate neckwear for occasions such as this one must undoubtly be the so called " Hanging noose", possibly of the "Louisiana lynching mob" type.
Classics will never let you down.
@Sean Connery
Niles Patelson is alway first on the scene of a big story like this!
@Sean Connery I rock the double Windsor. And that's why i get all the hos.
@felipedeeznuts
Try the Persian. Its similar to the Kelvin, but more difficult. My second choice, especially for the longer ties, and soon you'll have hoes AND pimps chasing you!
@Sean Connery He busted out his MacBook in the middle of the show and wrote this entry...lol
@ceejw
Is that some kind of a new racist way in making his name sound more western?
@Sean Connery
If you watched the show you would have seen, he pulled out his laptop, while another guy snapped the pics...they even joked around about the audience going and digg, and digging the article.
Is that a front facing camera I see at the top right????
Video conferencing maybe???
now there's one question I haven't seen asked by anyone..Really hope they enable it, stay future proof..
@Sean Connery he posted at the show from a mac book, it was quite funny
@SeNiLe911 Yeah a "Zack Morris" phone
@Ducman69 No t I. I love my iPhone touch screen text. Love it! You couldn't give me a slider. Also this phone looks like a bulky piece if junk. If I thought there was a phone that could replace mg beloved iPhone it would be the nexus one. Great feel in your hand, slim, good performance. Just not good enough to take the place of the iPhone. I'm waiting for apple's next move. Pretty certain they will re-establish their dominance.
@Sean Connery. http://www.totieatie.com/kelvin.asp
@Psyg They made up Anglo pseudonymes at MWC. It's in the podcasts.
@Tangerinescream - Apples next move? you mean releasing the iPhone 3GS2, now equipped with the option to have vibrate AND a ringtone. i hear its coming out next month for only $100 more than the current iPhone. I cant wait.
@plenaghan88 That means a WVGA OLED display, at least 8Gb of internal memory, 1GHz processor, GPS, 3G, Accelerometer (of course), and the best mobile OS ever (:
@Sean Connery
he tries to be "hip", wears weird shit, ties bandana's around his arm, dude tries wayyyy too hard
Anyone else think that looks hideous?
@steakman
yep, it's a bit of a moose! I like how the OS is shaping up, just not on this particular handset!
@steakman
No, I like it!
@steakman
The OS or the device?
The OS, I think looks great.
The hardware, eh, looks like a phone. I don't think it's ugly, but it any winning any awards.
@steakman
ya, looks a little 2006-ish
@steakman I meant the phone!
@steakman
I think it is great as long as the build quality is there.
@steakman
I think it looks quite nice. I can think of much, much uglier handsets. Like the Droid / Milestone. Ugh, that thing is hideous.
@steakman: I don't think you realize that it's just a prototype. The design is subjected to change.
@EM1 On topic: I agree that WinPhone7 looks impressive; very impressive. However, I want more questions answered. There are to many variables to be addressed. How does multitasking work? Notifications? Give us some detailed insight of the 'Chassis' that will make up the hardware. Anyway let's see how this one rolls out to the market! Glimpse: http://bit.ly/win-phone-7-verdict
@steakman
Just an Apple fan who isn't used to sharp edges, qwerty keyboards and anything that isn't just a big screen with a button.
@priyaloreds I swear that's my comment from an earlier post..,
Hmmmm...
@GmanC I think it pretty much looks exactly the same as the droid.
@MrGlitch
really? Think you should go see an optition. I don't see know silly chin and garish gold bits on the LG's keyboard. Speaking of which, the keyboard on the LG looks to be a 1000% better than the droid too, though I guess that doesn't take much since the keyboard on the droid is up there with the worst keyboard on a handset, ever.
It's awesome to watch the show live and get the news really fast !
Okay, the fact that they're going with that form factor for at least one of the phones is making it really hard for me to want to stay with Android next round. If no one is going to bother coming out with a decent successor for the G1 on T-Mobile US then this opens up my options greatly.
@Dafrety I agree. Am curious as to what processor it has, though.
@Flobin
I'm pretty sure the minimum Microsoft is letting Win7 Phones ship with is 1 GHz Snapdragon processors, which sounds really good right now.
Looks pretty sweet, although it's a stereotypically safe LG design.
@Nerdtalker
The keyboard should be at the very least usable, then. Battery life...
For some reason it looks like a generic LG phone...
"For some reason it looks like a generic LG phone..."
well if you haven't noticed most of LG touch phones look absolutely identical. they're like the Honda of the cell phone industry.
@MrHashbrown: you obviously haven't seen the current generation fit.. or civic... or insight.... or accord..........
@LCDBox
I have a LG with windows Mobile and it runs like pure garbage. I've never used another phone with winmo, so I'm not sure if it's winmo or the phone, but according to other people winmo isn't so bad.
@Prokanda
or the Acura TL ;-)
@Sad Sack
The Acura TL from 2006 kinda look the same from 1998. That's just a shame...
