I can't wait till I can get a Pre so I can enjoy all the awesomeness they keep adding!
Thanks Palm for continuing to update and support your WebOS platform for free and so frequently!
Now for the next generation of devices! When the Pre II comes out, I'm all in!
@ThatGuitarGuy
Should it be the Palm Pre 2, or the Palm Present?
@ThatGuitarGuy
Hey, Don't fool urself.WebOS is dying.
WobOS needs to be in a 7inch and Up tablet. Not on a phone
@staticjethro I don't think they're going to die. It'll take some time, just like Apple took time, (I don't think it'll reach the level of Apple by any means though.)
A tablet would be incredible, but it's too soon. After the announcement of the iPad a lot of people were talking about a WebOS tablet. Unfortunately Palm doesn't have enough of WebOS developed or applications/programs that would make it worth it.
One of the major things for me in terms of a table is a good Word type program so I can use it to take notes in class, for work, etc. A slideshow presentation software program would be great as well. This is one area that I feel like Apple has a leg up, (I feel like Apple dropped the ball though.)
@ThatGuitarGuy - this is wonderful news!
webOS 1.4 is what we have all been waiting for – those of us who bought the Palm Pre soon after the June 2009 launch. The Palm Pre has such an awesome camera, and it takes extremely sharp and beautiful pictures with rich colors. Having video capture capability is the icing on the cake!
But wait, I am not done; webOS 1.4 adds Flash 10.0, wow!
@ThatGuitarGuy You better hope the Cowardly Lion guy doesn't run out of money.
@yulebellow
Quagmire: Wait, Pre-Op or Post-Op?
Guy in bar: Pre-Op.
Quagmire: Whoa!! Transvestite, back off.
@Thinker
i wonder when said flash plugin will be available. adobe site still says first half of 2010. still months left until the middle of the year.
Hurry Adobe, hurry!!
@ThatGuitarGuy
In retrospect and in comparison to the likes of, say Apple, I'm just glad that I didn't have to purchase an entirely NEW phone to get video recording, as well as many of the OTHER great updates that 1.4 provides us with.
@yulebellow Palm "Post".
@ThatGuitarGuy: Actually, they just hit 2000 apps in their catalog within 6 months. There's the homebrew scene as well, and they recently released their PDK development kit, so there's that as well. As an independent (and often for hire) developer, I actually prefer to develop for it because the platform is so open, there are a lot of ways to develop for it, and the tools are free (except for the phone, which is very affordable itself). It saves me a lot of upfront cost overhead over iPhone or even Android development (to a slight degree) and would prefer to only work on webOS...unfortunately for me, too many kids make me hurt myself financially and force me to work on those other mobile platforms because people keep buying those phones instead.
@Puggs,
Actually this is a surprise, I thought we were getting Flash 10.1 beta, but Palm made a good decision to give us Flash 10.0 instead of beta software, which would not have been stable.
Of course, the advantage of Flash 10.1 is that it enables hardware acceleration of Flash content; this will provide much faster performance in running Flash contents such as videos and games.
I heard that Flash 10.1 will be released by June 2010, which is about three months away.
Tenth
About damn time ! I wish Palm takes bold decisions on the Pre 2, the Pre has played it safe for a long time ! I want to see webOS on awesome hardware, not on something that would just pass by. If only HTC made webOS devices :(
@Ameen Amen!
@Ameen I don't think Palm is trying to play it safe with the Pre by any means. I think the "slow" (which isn't really slow, remember iPhone 2G... shutter!!) adoption of features is lack of resource (money and people). I have been very impressed with Palm and the Pre. In less than a year Pre/Pixi owners are basically on par with every other smart phone (and have it better in some areas). None of these smart phones are perfect honestly. WebOS one of the best mobile OS' out there and better in some respects than anything I have seen. But that is my opinion of course.
@bseaton12 iPhone 3G is shudder worthy slow also. Course the 3GS seems faster then phones with a snapdragon because iPhon OS doesn't do nearly as much as everyone elses.
odang
Downloading as we speak (well actually type, right?)
Pretty excited bout video recording, been wanting that for a long time, and I'm pretty jazzed about the Flash beta that will be in the App Catalog soon. Never been a better time to be a Pre owner, thats for sure!
@RockNStuff
Agreed - Now if we can just get voice dialing...
yeah d/l as we speak cannot wait!!!
@Gi
Alright for some...
"Checking for updates..."
"Your phone is up to date."
No it's NOT!
Nice
Although it feels like it took a while for 1.4 to drop, you have to give Palm credit for continuing to update the Pre. But, I do agree with most every one else-- they need to bring it hard with the next version. The hardware needs to be improved if they want to fix the mess they are in right now.
What a nice weekend treat for WebOS device owners. Have fun!
yessssssss thank the lord I'm downloading now...I been up all day waitin for this...thank palm for coming thro...
@gabe2829
hey is this suppose to only apply to pre owners because i have apalm pixi and it installed but wasnt trying to do so until i put it on the charger.
damn, shouldnt have sold my Pre. :(
I love how its 2010 and companies like Apple and Palm are including video recording...
@Mivanx77
What do you think they should add, lasers that can scratch your ass?
@Mivanx77
Some DSLR's don't even have video recording and those are you know, actual cameras.
@daytripper they have those??
Servers must be getting slammed.
"Unable to connect"
...Lot of nerds up at this hour. Sucks for me.
This update is awesome. The video recording looks amazing compared to other cellphone videos I have used and seen. It is very easy to edit, high quality and simple to upload and use. The cards open slightly faster, even though I never noticed it being slow before and I like the new way they open "minimized" first. I love that the blink notifications are now a part of the default settings and I love the AUPT that the preware fellows put together; all my patches easily updated to 1.4.
The Pre is by far the best and most fun phone that I have ever used or seen. I feel like WebOS is the perfect combination of iPhone qualities, Android qualities and WinMo qualities with a perfect user interface and a the perfect use of multitasking.
Thank you Palm and I will continue to support you as long as you continue to roll out great software. The hardware could use a little QA.
@tmark86 Completely agree, however for some reason I can't access the web now. Everything is running great except that. Hopefully it works if i give it another restart. Other wise its a lot smoother and I like how the apps are opening; doesn't maximize from card view until it is fully loaded.
@chunios do you have the multimod patch installed? There's a bug in it that keeps the browser from functioning properly.
at least this video is as creepy as those commercials
Updated. For Sprint users who have fought with the great addition of 3D games almost two months ago and the "Too Many Cards" error, it seems a little better. I still have to close other cards to get a 3D game open, but at least I don't have to do a Luna restart or use JStop.
Overall, the video recording is nice. Direct upload to YouTube and Facebook will be nice once it is not 3:30 AM and I have something to record worth showing people.
The OS does seem a touch better/smoother, and that is not the reboot/placebo effect. The new call history is nice. This phone keeps getting better.
Thanks Palm. And thanks to the webOSinternals guys. Patches crossed over without a hitch.
@Cringer - Damn right!!
Thanks to all the people working on the WebOS homebrew community for putting the extra effort these past few weeks to make sure updating goes without a hitch. I was afraid my phone was going to time travel when I updated with the patches installed, although to be honest I removed the enable LED notifications patch just in case since I knew the option was going to be included in the new version.
Just Updating on O2 Germany.
Download was pretty fast though...
saves my day!
Whoa big update
FINALLY! They said it was to be done on the 26, not 27th!
@smartmouth They who? Not Palm.
@smartmouth
Pacific Time sweetie
@Gi I live in la, the update came at 12 am
Thank you Palm for not forcing me to buy a new phone just to record video.
i am so excited with this update i'm actually keeping the phone! i was going to sell it but not anymore! the phone runs smoother, scrolling is faster.. apps open quickly! thanks palm for this update!
So has the update been fairly smooth so far? No major problems?
Let's all compare the update to WebOS1.4 with recent updates on other platforms like Android and see how smoothly this goes.
@Hazdaz Mines bricked..... probably not widespread. I love the pre but mine have been cursed by the gods apparently...
Palm is Pretty much on Sony's level with the frequency of these updates and I love it. For the size of their company they acomplish a ton. I feel bad for their marred advertising and the fact that everyone counts them out. The Pre is a great phone no matter how you slice it. At the rate they refine their already amazing OS it gives me excitement to see how their future plays out. WebOS is easily the best mobile operating system out.
