Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 gets unboxed, sized up against the competition
Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 started shipping to Americans just over a fortnight ago, and now one has landed into the capable hands of Pocketables. Boasting a 2GHz Atom CPU and some of the most unsightly adapters we've ever seen, this flip-open handheld -- which just looks too lovely to be saddled with the "UMPC" moniker -- strangely stirs something within our heart. It's one of those "I know I don't need it, but I just have to have it" things. Don't agree? Hit the source link, scroll all the way down, think about the upcoming weekend, and then see how you feel. Oh, and feel free to check out those size comparisons if you need extra encouragement in the "ooh" and "aah" department.

The screen is unacceptably small and it will limit functionality of the device.
@AleksanderHugo geez.
That is kind of the point. It is a UMPC; designed to fit in your "man bag" or purse. It makes it easy to carry a fully functioning computer that can run desktop software.
It is not for everyone. Apparently you fit in that category.
Some of us find it more useful then carrying a crippled device that requires hooking up to a desktop/laptop computer to perform certain tasks.
To each their own.
@tmarks11 Yes, I understand that, but look at Vaio P. Screen takes up almost entire surface of the device. In Fujitsu you have screen area smaller than the half of the area of the device.
In other words, you get a screen from a smartphone in a device that is almost twice as big.
@AleksanderHugo Good point. The comparison with the Sony P was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Fujitsu UH900, too.
The problem with the UH900 is it is too big to fit in a pocket except maybe in large jacket pockets. So if it doesn't fit in your pocket, why not get something slightly bigger and more useful?
That was where I discovered that the Sony P was not much smaller then my Dell Mini 9. Which was far cheaper, had a bigger screen, and better battery life. Same width, slightly less depth.
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/28031-sony-P-vs-Fujitsu-UH900-vs-UMID-BZ-vs-Dell-Mini-9
The sizing link above shows the incremental increases in size from the UMID BZ (which you can easily fit into cargo pants pocket) to the Fujitsu, Sony P, and Dell Mini 9.
I want something more portable then my Mini 9. 5.6" screen is attractive, but I am thiking I am going to wait for the higher spec'd UMID BZ to be released (with 1.6 Atom, 1-2 GB of memory, and 1024x600 screen).
Yep, that screen is asinine. Look at the wasted space on each side.
Squandered potential, once again.
"I know I don't need it, but I just have to have it" ﹖﹖﹖﹖ no............ but i had the exact feeling when ipod touch first came out. lol
@ahchar G1 iTouch was misery in my eyes, I wondered if that was going to be the trend (an underpowered, mp3 that was going for gimmicks rather than power or function...the iPhone was a better PMP to make my point more clear). 2nd Gen they turned up the heat and made something better than my iPhone and better than the iPhone 3G, that one made me regret not even looking into how much they improved the device.
@juanvaldez
While I'm not an Apple fanboy (heck I don't even own an Apple product and never have), you do know that iTouch is not an Apple product, right?
It's actually a DAP made by Pasen (released 2007).
when did they start making 2GHz Atom CPU's? :S
the best i had ever heard of was a 1.66GHz Atom
@BubblegumBalloon seems like the American version has 1,6ghz Atom, the imported thing they had was with 2ghz, so u would get the 1,6ghz one anyways :X
@Kaboof
...no fair :'(
@BubblegumBalloon /facepalm There have been 2 Ghz Atom CPUs since 2008...... the ones that are more widely known are the 1.66 Ghz Pinetrails and the 2 Ghz are Silverthornes, with model numbers like ZXXX. (e.g. the Z550)
could be the first 2ghz atom. why would i have it if i don't need it?
@jpzante Never bought anything you don't need? ...You must be married
@juanvaldez
haha i was thinkin he must not be a man...but a married man makes a lot more sense
I bought an HP Mini with a 1.6 Atom and the 1024 x 600 screen.
The screen was useless. I would not display anything correctly. The processor was so slow that it took up to a minute to load some websites.
I have now sold this useless device and have gone back to lugging my new Dell Studio 1745.
@rederikus aha...
@rederikus funny. I have a dell mini 9 with an 8.9" 1024x600 screen and same 1.6 processor. That thing rocks. So much so, that my wife has stole it from me and won't give it back.
Sure, it won't play crysis or COD...
What software were you trying to run on it?
@tmarks11
still runs emulators just fine ;)
If I was rich, I would have ROOMS filled with things like this.
@Brent1700
If I was rich I would fill rooms with with Ferraris. What's your point?
If I WERE rich, I'd spend all day correcting grammar.
Me likey.
What an AWESOME looking little device. Except... who in the _____ thought they had LCD space to waste?
I had no reaction to the photos until I saw the HTC. Now I have drool on my shirt.
@Luke
Ditto...that HTC sure is sexy. Oh, we were discussing the Fujitsu...pass.
What's with the dongle plugs in the front? Seems like they'd always be in the way.
Also, why is it so hard for these guys to get a ruler for their pictures? I really don't have a good frame of reference for all the different UMPCs they compare it to, but I have a fairly good idea how long a foot is (and can figure out CMs as well).
"I know I don't need it, but I just have to have it"
I completely agree!!
Kinda cool, but it seems Fujitsu decided to throw up their hands when deciding where the ports should go? I can't imaging typing on the keyboard with that dongle plugged in the front. What were they thinking?!?!?
Would be perfect if it had an odd sized ultra-wide screen to maximize available surface area.
The 2.5 hour battery life kills it for me.
did you guys see that screen size comparison for UH900 and HD2?
boy I'm gettiing a HD2.
Am I the only one who can't find this online with a 2GHz Atom processor? I even visited Fujitsu's website and the LifeBook UH900 they are selling has the Atom Z530 processor which clocks in at 1.6GHz.
This would seem tempting if I could find some solid tech specs but everyone is reporting something different. I would like to see what kind if Intel IGP this thing is running along with estimated (would prefer real world) battery life specs but I can't find anything on this.
@kornchild2002 Someone in the supply chain does not want market the product in the United States. There is a perception that we fear performance, or something. I don't get it.
I don't know why anyone doesn't make an active digitizer slate. (Besides Fujitsu's slow, bulky and expensive option)
Amazon says they foresee a "Paper-free world". That's not going to happen until capturing ideas is as easy and fluid as the good old pen and paper. Give me a fast, affordable slate that allows me to take notes and sketch out ideas and my wallet will be open faster than steve jobs can say Cupertino!
