Mio stuns at CeBIT with ultra-sleek Moov V780 MID
Uh, folks -- we've an identity crisis on our hands. Is this a MID with a penchant for navigating? Is this a PMP with pre-loaded maps? Is it an ultra-sleek navigator that just so happens to play music? There's a fair chance the world will never know, but we'll soon be stopping by Mio's booth at CeBIT in order to get a view of things ourselves. At any rate, the Moov V780 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing things to come from the outfit in quite some time, offering up 720p multimedia playback, an HDMI output, digital TV support, a 7-inch (800 x 480 resolution) display, 600MHz CPU, 512MB of memory, 4GB of onboard flash and a pretty tremendous list of supported file formats. Sadly, it's humming along on Windows CE (rather than, say, Android), but at least it ships with WiFi and optional WiMAX. There's no mention of a price or release date, but we'll be on the hunt for those tidbits as soon as the show floor opens up.

And what's wrong with CE?
@n8equalsd Hear, hear. Who the heck really cares what OS underlies a dedicated (to a couple of things) device, if it does the job well.
Why not bump up the resolution and throw a 1GHz Snapdragon in there?
@n8equalsd You guys do realize that windows phone 7 is on CE too, right? same with the zune hd.
@n8equalsd
Exactly. CE is just a kernel...it is not Windows Mobile or that godawful Win9x-esque shell they throw on some CE devices. If their shell for it is nice, intuitive, and responsive, it doesn't matter if it runs on CE, Linux, FreeBSD, or a popcorn kernel for that matter.
And don't forget, that Windows Phone 7 thingy everyone is so gaga over runs on CE 6.0.
@n8equalsd im sure lots of things.
@n8equalsd
Nothing at all. But why on earth wouldn't you throw in Bluetooth???? I mean if this is going to be a GPS device (Which would be MY primary use for this device) why not add hands free calling into the mix??? oh well, so freak'n close to an almost awesome device.... Hopefully they're listening and add that in on the next release.
Kinda nice for a "Feature" (as opposed to a "Smart") slate.
It really doesn't matter what the underlying OS is in this case.
Seems underpowered. Looks great though.
Add 2", put in apple's A4 chip, and run android 2.1.. One dream that will never come true.
@scots79 Apparently the A4 just uses an A8, not an A9

So it would be better to say you wished for a Snapdragon 2 or Tegra 2 :-P
@scots79
I love how people rave about a chip in a new unreleased device, it says Apple on it so it must be genius. Yes and mice only needed one button and IBM G4 & G5 chips were faster than Intel, Steve lies with the best of them.
Is there a multi-media device that has a 3.5"/4.0" multi-touch screen, 250gb/500gb hard drive, fast cpu, lots of ram, etc out there? I want a large hard drive for flac files and video. Let me know if anyone knows.
@ryankage
The short answer is 'no'. The Archos 5 can reach most of your specs on paper but is not a wise use of your money IMHO (the thing lags, glitches, doesn't handle music files that well,etc.)
I wanted the exact device you described, but in the end settled for an ipod classic 160(I created a parallel library of apple lossless from my flac files).
I am pretty happy with my purchase, but would have jumped at a slate like media device with good SQ and tons of storage. In around 2 years the ipod touch will have over 120GB of flash storage, more ram, bigger screen (most likely...), and a faster CPU so it might actually fit you spec sheet. I really wish ZUNE would have kept the hard drive player line by releasing a hard drive model zuneHD.
@New Reformation
*Is happily using my Zune 120 that I bought brand new for $200 on eBay over the holiday break*
The Zune 80/120 kills the iPod Classic. Should have hit up the eBays my friend, though the Classic ain't bad I wish someone would bring back HDD based PMPs even if they have a premium over flash based ones. There obviously is a market for it.
@kenny goo
I will soon be running it through a line out dock and an amp soon so the Zune and the ipod should be fairly similar in sound. :D The new 160GB classic has vastly improved SQ of previous classics. With the LOD it should sound superb.
Battery life was/is a big issue for me so I did end up going with the ipod over the Zune. But like I said, if there was a new hard drive zune with 160GB I would have bought it . Regardless, I have lossless audio, I can always switch over to Zune if they ever release another high capacity player.
Here hoping that they do. The ipod classic needs some competition.
@New Reformation It's a shame, really. I've been playing around with the Zune 4.0 software on Windows 7 and wow, with the Zune Pass (14 day free trial) it's an amazing experience so far (too bad no more large hard drive capacity Zune players). I have been looking at the Archos 5 and while the hardware is almost perfect, it still has that nasty resistive touch screen and a poor port of Android. I wish Microsoft would throw that 1.8" 250gb hard drive in a Zune, but now we know that won't happen. Cowon should jump in the game for us large music file users!
@ryankage there's the 5" Archos IMT and Archos IT with linux and android respectively
Loooking Gooood ! :p
I had a couple of Mios. Their hardware was pretty good, but their TeleAtlas maps were the suck. I hope they've gotten better map data.
They had me until Windows CE, then my brain when BLEH!!!
@MrLinux you do realize that windows phone 7 is on CE too, right? same with the zune hd.
BEWARE THE STREAK IS SHOWING ITS NOSE. Why 7 inch and why no camera. Could have made it more pocketable, and a strong competitor to other MID's. Overall nice design and if the price is affordable can still be a winner.
Wow engadget...holy stupid fanboy hate on for windows ce anything...windows ce powers a ton of s**t out there...who the f**k cares if it works...this constant whining is boring...
@lip
I totally agree but it's Engadget so what do you expect? I only come here to stay relatively up to date with what's happening in the tech world but I try not to read their not so subtle subjective reporting. They unfortunately fall victim to tech trends instead of seeing through that like true gadget fans and geeks.
Needs more Dell Mini 5
7 inch display? Good. HDMI out? Good. Wi-FI? Good. Oh wait, this is till an MID. God dammit... Where is my 7" Windows 7 Premium tablet?!
@kenny goo
Thought it needs a GSM radio to be a MID?
But can it run Crysis?
600mhz? I smell Tegra.
Ooooh, me like. Seriously, I like it because it is running CE. This means, you can have it multiboot different apps You can run Garmin, Igo, Iguidnance, Tom Tom and a bazillion other CE GPS apps. Sorry, Android does not have the maturity in GPS navigation apps that WinMo has,. Next, you can hack it to run core-player which pretty much covers all your media files except some ONVP6 .FLVs.
CE based navigation units from China, Mio, Magellan and Navigon have been a pleasure to hack these past few years.
When I went to Central America,I had to leave my iPhone and Android at home because you can always torrent Latin American maps for CE.
sure is viliv in here
I hate dumbass lopsided bloggers.....
oohh, it doesn't run android then the product must suck.
Windows CE is a very power platform
