Keepin' it real fake, part CCLVII: iPad meets Windows 7, sparks fly
It would seem like we've recalled our editor from Shenzhen a little prematurely. The land of Yao has gone and answered all the iPad's critics in resounding style: TESO's 10-inch clone tablet features a full-blown Windows 7 install (check), 1024x600 capacitive touchscreen display (check), HDMI output (check), a 1.66GHz Atom N450 (vroom vroom!), 1GB of DDR2 RAM, GPS, 3G, and a 3,000mAh battery. Yep, it's a netbook sans the keyboard, and it might weigh 1.2kg while stretching to a portly 2cm thickness, but are you really gonna let a few well-rounded edges get in the way of experiencing a grown-up desktop OS on that tablet you so desperately need? Couple more pics await after the break.
Update: 9to5Mac has alerted us to the fact that this clone seems to be sporting the same front plate as the one purported to belong to the iPad in the days before its release. Good to know all the engineering that went into inflating the iPhone's bezel up to 10 inches didn't go to waste.

Flash Android on this baby, and you have the best tablet!
Watch out Apple, some weird company did the Tablet better than you.
@Drybones5
That looks like a front camera on it too.
@Drybones5 The source link states that there is no camera.
@Drybones5
yeah !
copied from California
assembled in china
@Drybones5
The real question is - Is it multi touch.. and how long does a 3,000mAh battery last...
@insy Multitouch would be an issue of software and windows 7 supports multitouch.
3,000 mah, well, I don't know but if that's a 3-cell battery, not long.
@Drybones5
Portrait mode accelerometer fail?
@Drybones5
They sure did.
@Drybones5: Hahaha. It would be great if it only worked. Never.
It's hard to take Windows users seriously when they are so desperate to copy Apple. Second-class citizenship never seemed so sad.
@Drybones5
No you won't. Unless you want Windows there is no point in using the crappy Atom CPU
@Drybones5
Android over a full desktop Windows 7 OS? your fanboism blinds you
@jellotime91 Most netbooks have a 2K mAH battery. 3K is very respectable.
@hvakrg N450 is no Hercules, but it blows away the iPad's cellphone processor from a performance standpoint.
That's a nice aluminium back there... Just like the real iPad...
@Unverified User What? It looks like white plastic to me...
@jellotime91
WOOSH!
@BigJayDogg3
There's no woosh, you are just too thick to comprehend my sarcasm. I get down-ranked and then someone that calls the iPad's back titanium doesn't - sometimes engadget users need to read beyond cliched comments.
well the backside looks bad, give it the titanium makeover and this baby could be really nice.
@Xstream
Ye the last part is cool.
WHO ELSE here thinks that the first three images are just wallpapers... i mean cmon engadget, i can screenshot my Mac OS X as my iphone wallpaper, will u make that into a KIRF?
@Xstream
add $1000 as well
Strange to say this but i would actually buy one >.
@TriXsteR Well I got a pair of used socks for sale... want to buy them???
Does it come in a non iFad looking version? If so, sign me up.
@TriXsteR
If I were you, I'd just buy a proper Windows Netbook instead - it would cost you less and I'm certain the experience will be a lot better. I really do not see a touch interface layered onto an OS and applications that expect a keyboard and mouse working very well on a tablet. Window 7 may well support touch but the legacy of non-touch applications will always hold it back.
@Kelmon: Actually, multitouch in Windows 7 works really well. If the pixel density is too high, just make the fonts bigger. Easy peasy.
Still, typing out anything longer than a quick comment is a PITA with any onscreen keyboard compared to even a crappy physical board, so I'd recommend a convertible tablet over a slate any day. Best of both worlds. Asus and Acer need to get their convertible netbooks and thin-n-lights (like the Acer 1820PT) more widely available.
@Alan Strangis
It doesn't work as well as a device that is 100% designed for touch and it never will. If I was looking for the best desktop OS then Windows 7 might well be it (I'm still stuck on XP at work) but it isn't the best OS to put on a tablet or other touch device and that's simply because the applications running on it almost certainly were never designed for a touch interface. Mind you, a custom touch device running custom software designed for touch that is running on top of Windows 7 would be fine, although I suspect the OS would be considered overkill and drive up the associated hardware requirements.
@TriXsteR The lengths people go, simply to get 'high-ranked' around here, lol.
I look forward to your unboxing and hands-on videos. :P
Looks and sounds great until you see how chubby the damn thing is! Yoikes!
Are those USB ports in that last picture? If so this thing will kick ass so much, if it had 2 gigs of ram I would be sold.
Pretty sweet for a KIRF...
@Almo
Tell me about it, this one is actually wide screen.
So what does the single button do seeing as Windows 7 doesn't have a "home" screen - open the start menu? Also I know the purpose is to imitate the iPad, but surely they could have put stereo speakers in it (that is in indeed that the "speaker" hole at the top is.
...not to mention at 2cm think you could easily beat bison and whales to death with it.
...now does it have a removable battery?
Blimey - wish I'd learnt how to spell, or at least proof read before I hit "submit" - wish you could edit your posts.
@Howzer
2 cm isn't really that much thicker than the Ipad. Apple's tablet is supposed to be half an inch, or 1,34 cm, so adding another 0,66 cm isn't that much of a difference. The device is still less than an inch thick.
It does seem to be a bit on the heavy side for something you can't ideally set down on a table or put on your lap though.
looks like those big iphones in apple store's display
that thing is HUUGE.
@echoes
That's what she said :P
Does it run flash? =P
woah, this is the ultimate iPad killer, i want one!
@(Unverified) I'll take 2 if I read just one good review. Engadget, it's never too late to send him back, send him back, please, in spite of such little information I want more then Dell mini 5 and I haven't wanted anything like the mini 5 in a long time.
This is truly an iPad killer...you just have to drop it on an iPad from an adequate height.
@Tes Might kill the 320GB HD. I'd prefer SSD, more durable and it'd make the system faster, but its nice that it has some specs that differentiate it from the iPad.
Looks like someone drove a steamroller over an iPhone!
LOL!!!! xD
wow! nice tech specs and a good (if not ripped off) design - this is more in the direction of a true tablet than the iPad itself. And ofcourse, Win7 FTW!
Wow, an ugly netbook with a touchscreen. Now that's something I've never seen before.
@O Gil
how is that ugly? looks like the back was part ibook to me.
This thing looks fab. If they make it legal then they would get plenty of buyers at the right price
@zondajag Well, iPad looking front with a 2004 iBook looking back... not the best option IMO. Not to mention it looks extremely thick for what it is.
To be honest, if this didn't look like the iPad then i'd buy it in an instant... i don't want to be mistaken for an iDiot, i got self respect i'm sorry
@Atkins
Crap? I said if it didn't look like the iPad, i didn't say i was going to buy the iPad.
@Psyg
Just buy whatever you want. If you want to worry about what other people might think of you for something that you bought then you've got bigger issues than the type of gadget in your bag. Seriously, no one cares.
