Pelikon's MorphPad demoed, combines touchpad, morphing keyboard into one awesome rectangle
British firm Pelikon was showing off its MorphPad technology at MWC this month, undoubtedly hoping to score some interest from representatives of handset manufacturers who just happened to be wandering the show floor -- but this isn't just any old morphing keyboard, you see. Not only can the board be dynamically reconfigured by backlighting different portions of the keys -- the entire surface of the thing doubles as a touchpad, which you can probably imagine has virtually limitless utility in a mobile device where the space for a true touchpad simply doesn't exist. Pelikon already works with Toshiba on its domestic-market Biblio, but we'd love to see it hit devices around the world -- in fact, we wouldn't really mind if they just released this prototype they're showing as a Bluetooth accessory. diNovo Mini competitor, anyone? Follow the break for video of the touch-enabled MorphPad in action.

I want this in a stand alone bluetooth device for HTPC though! Somebody buy this tech.
@(Unverified): agreed! The DiNovo Mini is nice, but way overpriced, especially with that funky pad (funky as in fairly annoying to navigate).

Does this remind anyone of the Nokia Aeon Concept???

@abedinthehouse
Its kind of like the Alias 2 except its color.

Looks good :)
although I could only see this being usefull on tablet PC's
@BubblegumBalloon
Could probably see this being used on Nokias next generation communicator and replacement for the E90
@BubblegumBalloon
I'd love a bigger version for tablets, but not that tiny thing.. I can definitely see that in the Droid though!
@BubblegumBalloon
Why only on a tablet? Why not cell phone? Look at Samsungs Alias 2, the e-ink keyboard is really cool. This would be one better because its color.
sounds like the PS3 chatpad. That works as a trackpad too.
Wow, its one of those simple but amazing ideas, would be great for a HTPC!
It will need one thing it make it perfect, and that is a locator feature... Because god knows I would loose that in the couch or something.
@bazookafx3 good thinking - this would be ideal for HTPC. Can't really see it being useful for phones. I mean - I can see the use but can't believe people would carry it and a phone around.
@cashclientel I can only really think of one practical use this thing would have for a phone. Maybe if I were to dock my phone with video out to my TV I *might* use it, but not likely as I do not dock my phone for something like that.
@cashclientel
I think what they meant was using that as the keypad on a phone. Think blackberry with the keyboard that doubles as a track pad.
@cashclientel
It's not a standalone device, they're targeting OEM's to get them integrated into the phone.
What would be cool is if it does get integrated into some handsets, is that it can then be paired with a PC and used that way.
@bazookafx3
If this could be slimmed down, it would be a great keyboard for this (http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/06/motorola-motosplit-to-have-dynamic-key-labels-lame-processor/) MOTOSPLIT. It would be a much better way to have a track pad on a phone than the implementation on the Backflip. IMO.
Will this work with the HD2??? If it does it's mine!
Somebody let me know...
It looks alot like the keyboard used on the Motorola Backflip, sans the morphing ability. Don't know what country the woman in the video is from but she was rather attractive, and oh that accent.
@DJ Megatron
Damn straight, she is HOT!
Is this what my motorola backflip will look like when i break it in half ??
Backlit and versatile....... Need it.....
LOL.. but, the soft keyboard is already a keyboard, this just reinstates the clunkiness of it hahaha...
Wow, talk about supercharged Horse and Buggies.
My finger joints hurt just looking at that.
I thought the Moto Backflip was supposed to be durable. How'd you do this to it?
I think it's too small, my fat fingers would get aggrevated and squish it. Definitely a cool idea though. I'd love to see this built into a smart phone, and wirelessly connected to an HTPC simultaneously.
OMG! I want it, Apple needs to buy them fools out!
I think Paul Miller will love this -- he envisioned a similar keypad just a few days ago.
I wish they put this on the moto backflip. Gaming on it would be amazing. It would only activate the touch sensors when it's opened up so u will avoid pressing on it when it's in your pocket.
@BayAreaPen
Or even have an app to activate it while closed to use as the HTPC remote everyone else is clamoring for. Actually that may be a cool use of the Backflip in anyway. :\ Hmmm.....
This is the best rectangle I have seen in a while!
Didnt Sony just try to patent something just like this for a universal game controller?
How has no one noticed the hot chick in the end?
@RLBurkes +1
OMG PUT IT ON A BLACKBERRY KEYBOARD! i would buy 17 of those out of orgasmic amazingness... c'mon RIM! DO IT!
Wow, if this was wireless it'd be perfect for my HTPC!
I'd love to see this on the next Palm Pre.
