Rejoice: PS3s across the land are now once again playable. That's the word according to our friends at
Joystiq, who say that the
clock issue affecting "fat" PS3s has been somehow resolved and games are once again working correctly. We're not sure if this means Sony's fixed something on the network side or if the internal clock just ran past a certain time, but at least our long nightmare is seemingly over. Hit up Joy for a quick Q/A on the whole situation, including a way to potentially save lost trophy data.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MW2 here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@sagbike14
Your playing MW2 on PS3? Lol might as well kept it off.
@Mrtoocool
what?
@sagbike14 Game on... God I missed you MW2, These past few hours have been tough
@sagbike14
Good. I might call in sick tomorrow afterall.
@sagbike14
Well, that was uneventful...
Oh well, PS3 owners. You got your downtime moment over with. Cherish your PS3. Embrace it. Love it with everything you got.
@nicholiservia
so you playing your PS2 games on your PS2 in the meantime?
@sagbike14 GAME ON HEAVY RAIN HERE I COME
@shadowj0 It's OK to love your PS3, just don't LOVE your PS3!
@sagbike14 yeah this was nowhere near the whole danger and sidekick fiasco.
@nicholiservia Sorry man, backwards compatibility is hardware sided, not software sided. So that wont be possible.
@sagbike14 STOLEN:
Looks like these nerds...
*puts on sunglasses*
...just got clock blocked.
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
@guitarkid
He's just trolling.
If he wanted BC so badly, his cheap ass would've bought the original PS3. The 60 GB was the most fully-featured hardware PS3 there was. And if he wanted the BC enough to deal with some hiccups, he would've gotten the fat ones that had a software emulator to run ps 1 and 2 games.
It's his own fault he missed that long waiting boat.
On topic: I think things just fell back in to the right place. They probably made a small adjustment to the server side code and let us wait it out and voila.
@nicholiservia Youre defending the machine that makes you pay extra for online gaming, wifi adapter, and only allows first party HDDs? Yet Sony sucks? You are an idiot. Oh, and before you call me a fanboy, I have both consoles. Live account: xXscots79Xx psn: scots79 I get the same thing from both online services, except live costs me 60 dollars more a year.
We're good for another 4 years, hooray!
@scots79 Amen. Plus the PS3 comes with Blu-ray compatibility
@nicholiservia get over it the PS3 has great games why would you want to go back to PS2 games!
"the internal clock just ran past a certain time"
It was that, since they all started working again at exactly 12:00 GMT
@scots79
wow man, you're getting punked if you're paying 60 dollars a year.
Also, who cares how big the hard drive is when you can just stream from a PC anyway...
You wanna know something? YOU SUCK!
@angermeans
I am not one to normally stand up for a troll, but to be fair, I have a couple xbox games that I still play on my 360, asking why someone would want to play an older game seems kind of stupid. After all lots of people still play NES games.
@Extinction Exactly - it's the same issue that affected the old 30GB Zunes on December 31, 2008 (some are saying it's the same Freescale chip that caused the glitch, but I'm not sure on that).
Once the clock rolled over a valid date, everything was fine.
@sagbike14
mw2 mw2 emdoubleyoutoooo rawr me go play now
@shadowj0 Uneventful indeed, I was too busy playing ME2 to notice my PS3 was on the fritz.
celebrate good times c'mon!
Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 2010.
@NHAnimator
So long as you don't party like it's February 29th, 2010!
Okay, get this, y'all: you can check out DVDs from my local library. Pretty common these days, right? So I sent the wife to pick up a disc I'd reserved from the library website ("Transformers 2," if you must know; I didn't want to spend actual $$ to see that one).
Anyway, she brought it home, and it wasn't a DVD. It was a frickin' Blu-Ray. I shi7 you not. My local library is CHECKING OUT BLU-RAYs. And oh, yeah, now I can actually watch it on my "overweight" PS3, thanks to Engadget (and Joystiq).
So, not to bury the lead, but WTF is a public library doing with Blu-Rays? You know the folks around here where I live are gonna check these things out, bring them back saying "This thang won't play in mah DVD player. It's broke."
@Smart People Play Tuba
Sounds like a total win for the nearby electronics stores...
"URE DVDS DONT WERK??? U NEAD DIS 700 DOLLER BLOO RAI PLAYAH"
@erik1080
. . . and a TOTAL LOSS for Blockbuster.
It was solveddddd earlier!!!
I dunno.
I don't trust the fix.
I'll stick with my RROD, thank you very much. ;)
@Meekermoloko There's a philosophical note here. You'd rather have the violent and tangible meltdown of solder across a microboard rather than the ghostly gremlin that exists in one and zeros.
me too.
Some old game still cost like they were new :(
That's a bug we won't likely see fix anytime soon.
@cdf74dc9
Maybe they will make a fix at the next leap year.
WTF!!!
The trophy server clock just hit 12am, March 2nd (GMT)... Correcting the issue.
My fat is logged back in to PSN.. However the date is showing as 4/29/2020 !!! Anybody else see this?
@jr2cool
I think the PS5 is trying to communicate from the future.
Or would that be PS4 (considering the extended lifespans of systems lately)?
@Meekermoloko PS4 Slim?
@jr2cool
Quick! Ask the PS5 from the future if Gran Turismo 5 will be out! I must know!!!
@jr2cool -- That's the 4th-dimension Kutaragi-san was talking about!
The trophy data was actually what was lost? Damn, i didn't turn on my PS3 fro stupid trophies? Who cares???
i'll wait to see if other ones are working before i turn mine on :)
You're source link sends me back to Engadget Home Page
Yeah boy #1 madden spot here I come
So what your saying, is... YPs32k didn't kill us?
Careful calling this fixed! Users are reporting their clock now reads 4/29/2020 (Which explains why games are working) but any trophies/purchases/etc done while the clock thinks its 4/29/2020 may not work once its restored back to the correct date (They will likely be invalidated the same way as the 1999 change since its a date in the future and will be flagged corrupt!)
@f00kie
You could, you know, click "Set via Internet" or do it manually. That's what everyone is doing.
"We're not sure if this means Sony's fixed something on the network side or if the internal clock just ran past a certain time..."
It's just gone 00:00 GMT, 2nd March. That could be it.
