Sony: Don't turn on your PS3 until PSN bug is fixed
Uh, wow. That PlayStation Network issue that struck late last night has officially ballooned into a full-on PlayStation disaster: Sony is now saying you shouldn't use "fat" PS3 models at all, since a clock-related bug might cause data loss. The PS3 slim isn't affected, however -- which explains some of the conflicting reports we heard last night. Sony says they're working to get this fixed in the next 24 hours, but for now it looks like older PS3 owners are out of luck -- we'll do our best to keep you entertained, guys.

I guess they are hoping the clock issue will fix itself.
@grydlok
they seem to be working really hard on fixing this asap
@nicholasphan They sure are! No latte breaks for the Sony team. Scurrying around like rats in a maze they are.

@grydlok
Sorry for the post hijack, but people won't see this on the fourth page.
CECHA0x - affected
CECHC0x - affected
CECHE0x - affected
CECHG0x - affected
CECHH0x - affected
CECHK0x - affected
CECHL0x - not affected
CECHP0x - not affected
Those are the Phat SKU's, stamped on the back of the console. If you've got one of the affected SKU's, don't use it. If you have an unaffected SKU, use it.
Not ALL Phats are down.
@Dr Blight My phat is working just fine. Even knows the correct time.
@grydlok i dont exactly believe this is true.
My PS3 is not fat. It's just big-boned.
@grydlok even a broken clock is right two times a day
@emopoops Well if you turn it off you will forget about it and all your problems will fade away
@Smart People Play Tuba:
And ugly
@grydlok They'll be lucky if they get out of this one without a full blown recall on their hands......
@Dr Blight
It's too late for my PS3. I tried to log onto PSN last night before hearing about this problem. Even after I knew about the problem, I tried changing the date to fix it like some people said it would (it didn't) and I played the two games I have that still worked (Assassin's Creed and Oblivion). Now I come to find out that I should have turned it off and kept it off.
@Smart People Play Tuba It's the Cadillac of Playstations!
@Steve B
same here. I was in the middle of playing mw2 when mine got hit. Too little notice, too late. Now wtf do i do?
@engadgetaddict
God I hope not. The only reason I bought mine was for the blu-ray player and God of War 3. This close to the game release, i'm going to be royally pissed if I have to send my unit back to sony to be replaced or fixed.
@Smart People Play Tuba
really!? 'cause i've NEVER seen a fat skeleton.
@grydlok Sony's PS3 phat trade-in for the new PS3 Slim, to compensate buyers, is a fantastic move on Sony's part. Please move.
@grydlok
I'm wondering... what if Sony purposely put activated that bug in light of the recent exploits found on the PS3 to force people to upgrade their firmware? Perhaps it was in the first gen PS3 so that maybe they can trigger it for a time such as this? IDK.. knowing Sony, like when they put rootkits in CD's, I wouldn't put such an act thing past them. This bug just seems so silly. Seriously? Internal Clock? What is this 1999 Again?
@Jordan
I hadn't noticed whether my "fat" PS3 is ugly. I'm too busy watching the screen.
First my Toyota and now this??!! The Japanese are trying to kill us!
@grydlok What about all of us who turned it on YESTERDAY?! Thanks for the delayed 'heads up' there Sony for those who didn't try to play a game last night, but does this mean everyone who tried yesterday is FUBAR?
@Steve B
I used my phat as well. I just couldn't keep my hands off Bioshock 2. I just disabled my Internet connection and started to play. Once I realized the my save files were loaded with the wrong date, it was easy to reload etc. I don't care about the potential memory loss- I'll just wait to update my ps3 until I've beat the game. Once it's beat, I it gets deleted, I won't mind. Heavy Rain and FFxiii will be waiting.
@grydlok
Y2K!
@redidas
**is it still a piece of shit compared to the 360
answer is yes
@aut0maticdan What if its in military time?
@aut0maticdan except when it sets itself to 1999.
@VAGRANT I second that motion!
@MrPacMan36
gtfo please.... no need to take advantage of this "opportunity"
@Smart People Play Tuba
DO NOT USE YOUR PS3; THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!
@(Unverified)
"This bug just seems so silly. Seriously? Internal Clock? What is this 1999 Again?"
Actually according to my PS3...Yes, yes it is.
@Rahabib Well, I own a toyota and a ps3 too and I'm still alive! Hurray!
@aut0maticdan
So your saying your PS3 has a fat skeleton...
@daaper yea same with, i was just about to get the game winning kill when i was signed out
@grydlok There is a 20+ page thread at Neogaf that explains it much better than I can. But people are getting this glitch that have never, ever connected their PS3s to the internet... so it's clearly not a PSN thing. It's a PS3 problem.
So far all Slim PS3s are fine (and connected to the PSN just fine). There are some people with the fat PS3s that can connect but the majority of fat owners cannot. On the contrary.. PS Slim is unaffected with this glitch. Why? Slim details: http://bit.ly/ps3-slim-dodge-a-bullet-advantage
@nicholasphan
so you are watching them work?
@Smart People Play Tuba
Mine is just Healthy.
@grydlok PSN IS BACK!!
@grydlok
PS3 Network now up!
Well mine was affected before, and just turned on to check is now working again!
@Dr Blight - Thanks for your informative post. HL0x model here. Spared. Too bad my Toyota can't be fix through a simple software upgrade.
Once this problem popped up and I heard about stats getting nerfed I figured I would not start the PS3.
You sync your system with a screwed network you get a screwed system.
@glamajamma It's not a screwed network. It's a screwed hardware component.
@WGSXFrank
is it only when you go online that the problem occurs? Can I play offline ok? I thought i'd check just in case!!
@(Unverified) It's happening to systems that havent been online as well ;)
Also, read the article above AND the sony blog post.
Reading comprehension... get some.
@glamajamma:
It's a screwed company. Sony's quality has taken a huge dump since their glory days of the walkman. If it wasn't for the increase in blu-ray popularity, Sony would be gone. They may sell a fair amount of PS3s, but all it's doing is making their company bleed money. After blu-ray, Sony doesn't have much time left here on Earth.
@Jordan
"If it wasn't for the increase in blu-ray popularity, Sony would be gone."
Wrong. Do you realize how huge Sony is? We are talking about one of the largest electronics companies in the world. Sony sells so many different kinds of products (many of which have nothing to do with Blu-ray, which isn't even doing all that well) that it is almost scary.
Getting back to this problem: this is the first time I have ever had a problem with my PS3 in the two years I've had it. My friend has been through three or four XBoxes in that time. Live is also down relatively often (more often than PSN from what I understand) and it is a service that, unlike PSN, costs extra money to use. From my viewpoint, I think Sony is doing a pretty good job.
@Jordan I would attribute Blu-ray's success to the PS3 and not the other way around. The main reason it beat HD-DVD imo.
@WGSXFrank What does it say? I can't read that at work. What happens to your system?
@Steve B
Are you kidding me?! Xbox live is so stable. I've had the same Xbox 360 since the day it came out, not once have I never been able to get online, except for when it was down for maintenance which only happens once in a blue moon, at 3am. And about the Xbox's quality, I've had the same Xbox for 4 1/2 years, not one problem with it.
ouch.
