Canon Rebel T2i / 550D squares off with EOS 7D in video performance test
We should all be pretty familiar with the specs of Canon's latest mainstream DSLR, so let's skip past the new 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, SDXC memory card compatibility and high-res 3-inch LCD screen, and just focus on the one area where the Rebel T2i has a shot at matching the EOS 7D: 1080p video. Ron Risman of Cameratown has perched the two black-clad champs atop a tripod, installed identical (for the purposes of the test) lenses on them, and gone to town with testing the ISO performance of the two bodies. As he sees it, there's no perceptible difference between the two up to ISO 1600, though looking at his video test we're also hard pressed to distinguish any notable discrepancies at the maximum 6400 setting. Needless to say, the conclusion is that if you're just after the 7D's video performance with a smaller price tag, the Rebel T2i / 550D is the shooter for you. To make that decision as informed as possible, there's also a feature comparison list, so skip along to the source link to get informed.

I could never own a canon... nikon all the way..
But how does video compare to 5d mark II?
Wasn't it the well respected DPReview.com website that reckoned that around 12Mpixels is about the practical limit when using the basic optics you get with these cameras?
With Canon, you have to go for the extremely expensive but awesome quality L series optics to get the benefits of 18Mpixels.
We're talking around 500 UK pounds for a 70-200mm L optics zoom lens, right up to many thousands of pounds for the rest!
I don't know why, something to do with the chromatic abberation where the different wavelengths (colours) of light reflect in different angles and so result in horrible colour fringing in the edges of the picture, is much more discernable in a higher megapixel camera apparently.

I'm so confused over which to buy. Which is odd cause I know they aren't in the same class.
I want the T2i cause the specs match what I need, and it has an SDXC slot.
But I want the 7D because the specs exceed what I need and cause it has a much sturdier build (which is extremely important to me).
@ernie Ditto. I'm really having a TOUGH TOUGH time justifying the extra expense of the 7D. I'm considering just taking the difference and buying a 17-55 f/2.8 or maybe a 16-35L. But a few reasons I'm liking the 7D are weather sealing, new 19 point AF, wireless flash trigger. Just not sure those three things are worth over $900 more?
@pcmike: The magnesium body + heavier body wasn't enough to justify the $900. If I was more of a prosumer I would've definitely sprung with it. Instead I spent the difference on an iPad + battery grip to add the weight.
