After a disappointing initial effort, Palm has unleashed version 1.1.0 of its webOS Facebook app. Currently only available via the update function but not the standard App Catalog, users will find new and improved access to their inbox, all their friends' photo albums, profiles, direct photo uploading, friend search and a list view for upcoming events and birthdays. The first thing we noticed was the initial news feed now matches the notification preferences set on the standard webpage stopping the inevitable flood of Farmville updates we blocked so long ago. Features still missing include chat, video and the ability to respond to friend requests but with a distinctly faster and tighter experience, it's certainly surpassed the mobile webpage as the best way to access Facebook on the Pre. Can't reach the update button right now? Check our gallery for a few more images or this video demo from PreCentral embedded after the break.
the full site is still much better. it was broken for a while, but 1.4 fixed functionality and as long as you're getting a decent 3G signal/wi-fi it's plenty fast enough (and you can use chat!)
@sweet greggo Also remember that you can do Facebook chat with any Jabber client. Just search google for the setting info. I love being signed into Facebook Chat as I would Gtalk or Aim.
@TheyDidItFirst Yeah I've noticed the full site works a hell of a lot better since the update. Now if only they could work full site functionality into the app, I'd be pretty happy. Being able to see iPhone friends use a much better facebook app makes me jealous.
@sweet greggo Hopefully this one could bring in the gift-horse for the palm web os., Hopefully web os will improve their platform on their next update. More about WebOs 1.4: http://bit.ly/palm-web-os-1-4-in-action
@gotwillk Exactly my thoughts. It was a nice first version (or second or whatever) but seriously, no INBOX (not even an option to launch to the browser to the inbox there)?? Come on FB, Android is much more worth your time.
I am really hoping that this will give Palm some more traction in the market. They need it right now. WebOS is rapidly leaving the beta stage, now it just needs some support in the market and some top tier hardware.
@Complex Pants I could not agree more with your statement on hardware. I owned a Pre and the hardware was so terrible that it over came my love for webOS. Now I'm a Nexus One owner, and content. :)
@BuryTheCastle That's because they keep giving you refurbished units. My first Pre lasted me till mid january and started to have problems. The replacement they gave me was a refurbished unit and had a problem when they gave it to me. I got my third unit last week and it has a problem so i'm thinking i may pay $50 and use my warranty in order to get a new one (assuming i can do this).
Palm shares are down, and there is speculation that Palm may be bought out if they can not perform the following functions: increase marketing efforts, supply unique applications that exhibit WebOs' distinct interface, and finally, what we are all waiting for...a new WebOs phone...a phone that has a bigger screen and a keyboard that is either bigger, or with an on-screen keyboard. -So come on Palm step it up. As a stakeholder in your company, I demand it. I love WebOS way too much for Palm to F this opportunity up.
@flintvandal i am thinking about buying palm stock and i would like some advice. i have a pre, i got my parents to get palms and they love them and i dont think anybody can honestly say they hate webOS. Do you think its a smart buy? I wouldnt invest thousands and thousands but a small investment seems good. I am leaning towards it.
Also, their stock will have to go up to around 10 bucks at least once in the next 6 months (unless they do nothing at all) so i could sell than. and any talk of a takeover raises the price, so im thinkin buy buy buy
@RyanGorup From what I read in the WSJ last week, Palm is in big trouble. The promised the street sales that they haven't come close to meeting. Although the product might be great, you really need to look at the financials.
@RyanGorup From my own personal research this is what I've concluded.
Palm has fell short of predicted 3q earnings. As reported by MarketWatch, "Palm said it would close its third fiscal quarter with more than $500 million in cash, equivalents and short-term investments. That's down by $90 million from the end of the previous quarter."
Palm has little cash flow to invest in the company for R&D and "Apple extensive" marketing. -Basically, they only have money for minor updates, such as WebOS 1.4 However, it is suggested that they must invest in both marketing and R&D to create "leading edge hardware design", as quoted by Matt Thornton of Avian Securities
Palm must receive support from carriers to rebound. i.e. make a deal with AT&T giving Palm the ability to sell GSM phones
They are just above their 52 week low of $5.81 -Currently @ $6.14 But that's, in part, due to the Qualcomm rally this past week. Meaning, that it may drop after the Tech Industry boost.
Shares are roughly double of what they were before the release of WebOS. -Analysts suggest that if the stock drops down to pre-WebOs prices the company could be bought out. Possibly by HP or Dell.
Most research experts have the stock at "Hold" or "Avoid"
...That's about everything.
My opinion is that Palm will rebound. Especially now that they know that EVERYTHING is at stake--that is, no more meaningless TV advertisements like they did in launching the Pre, and who knows what else. So i'm hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst. Personally, I bought my first shares of Palm at $6.09 this past Friday.
Furthermore, and this is just my opinion, I think in order for Palm to really boost Pre sales, in the short term, is for them to include an on-screen keyboard in their next WebOs update.
If you love Palm and WebOS....For everyone reading this, I STRONGLY suggest to you to call Palm and suggest that they include an on-screen keyboard in their next update -I have already called several times requesting this in the past week. Moreover, you can go to Palm's website and suggest the on-screen keyboard and whatever else you feel would be beneficial @ http://www.palm.com/us/company/feedback.html , also something i did recently.
@Sawawa Until Adobe adds Flash to the Pre, I will continue to consider the update, minor. However, that's not to say that I am taking anything away from how great the update was for my Pre; the video feature was a big benefit for me and for you, im sure. It's just that, in my opinion, having Flash on a smartphone has a much greater impact when trying to increase phone sales than does everything else in WebOS 1.4. -But i'm just playing devil's advocate. In fact, I realize that I misspoke and probably should have referred to the update as just an update, rather than it being minor of major.
Kudos to Palm for the update to the Facebook app. It's a much more complete package now, and the UI is still pretty slick. I don't think I'll be using the mobile site or Friendsbook any longer.
Regarding video: you can upload videos to Facebook in the Camera app with WebOS 1.4. Chat should be coming soon to the the Messaging app now that Facebook supports Jabber.
@ConradOBrien Count me in as well. I LOVE the speed and battery improvements in 1.4. Shows just how much webos can improve. Just get the hardware taken care of and I will be buying Pre 2 is June with Sprint Premeir.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I might be able to use this as my premier facebook app now.
Scratch that. I WILL be using this as my premier app. VERY nice, VERY slick. Just needs a chat feature to be complete. Nice job!
@sweet greggo Web Os style windows and boxes have a really nice texture to them. I like it!
@sweet greggo

@werty1432k
yeah I was about to say, this looks more WebOSsy
@sweet greggo

just wish you could choose which albums you upload to.

damn when is something like this coming for the android??
@gotwillk yeah seriously!!! does anybody know when a good update for the facebook for android app is coming out??
@gotwillk
Exactly my thoughts. It was a nice first version (or second or whatever) but seriously, no INBOX (not even an option to launch to the browser to the inbox there)?? Come on FB, Android is much more worth your time.

@Chazwell
I will be on my third Pre come tomorrow. Hardware wise, it's consistently failed me.
Every single day, it makes me regret keeping my iPhone....
@BuryTheCastle If you'll be getting your 3rd Pre tomorrow, yet regret keeping your iPhone, how many phones do you have? I'm lost.
@BuryTheCastle That's because they keep giving you refurbished units. My first Pre lasted me till mid january and started to have problems. @eman564 I am still on my 6/6/09 Pre. Still going strong.
@Complex Pants As am I. Love my Pre. I'm still hoping for a new better hardware WebOS device this June...
A very nice update indeed. Nice work, Palm!
@dcoaster Yes, a concur. A nice update from Palm. I'll most likely use Facebook more often with the new updated functions.
love this App. i was really tired of having to use the slow webpage...Good job Palm. Now give me a larger screen device and ill stay a loyal customer.
Thank You!!!! I love you Palm!
The engadget show...has an afterparty...???
oh wow this app is alot better, keep it up palm, just wow us with Pre 2's hardware and I'll stay with webos
webOS finally has a couple killer apps.
Finally the Facebook app is useable!! Good job Palm. Lets keep up the good work.

That's just my $.02. Take it for what you will.
@flintvandal WebOS 1.4 was not a "minor" update by any stretch of the imagination.
@Sawawa Until Adobe adds Flash to the Pre, I will continue to consider the update, minor. However, that's not to say that I am taking anything away from how great the update was for my Pre; the video feature was a big benefit for me and for you, im sure. What's webOS? Jk jk. Finally!
Kudos to Palm for the update to the Facebook app. It's a much more complete package now, and the UI is still pretty slick. I don't think I'll be using the mobile site or Friendsbook any longer.
"much necessary"?
@FitFan I agree
@RichardLawler
Thanks :-)
Thank You!!!! I love you Palm!

1.4. The smoothest update yet. Bangin' facebook app! Very nice. Now bigger screen.
After WebOS 1.4, I'm now officially a palm fanboy.
@ConradOBrien Count me in as well. I LOVE the speed and battery improvements in 1.4. Shows just how much webos can improve. Just get the hardware taken care of and I will be buying Pre 2 is June with Sprint Premeir.
This must be the first time i see Engadget use the word "and" in a tittle.
@Mr Blurrycam:
Your avatar made me wonder about my monitor for a few seconds before I realized that it's, well.
Mr. Blurrycam.
However the Engadget app no longer loads comments on WebOS 1.4. I think that needs a much necessary and much appreciated update.
@haubey wow i thought it was just my phone. was about to format the phone. I cant get comments to open also from the engadget app on my Pre.
@neeko18 i'm pretty sure it's a worldwide bug. it sucks, doesn't it?
@haubey works on my pre ( UK o2 )
Tip: Not available in the UK on the GSM (O2) version. Have the 1.0 installed, but 1.1 doesn't appear in Updates (I'm on webOS 1.4)
