*giggle*
Still, what a CV booster if HTC comes out of it clean.
@Flasher T
With Apple's legal team on their arse, I doubt they will, though...
@archkron
Yeah but not Google's as well.
@archkron
I have a feeling the difference between lawyers in the top 99% and lawyers in the top 98% aren't that great. I think HTC can afford adquate representation.
@archkron I'm not saying "come out on top". Admission of guilt is hardly paramount for a fight between two corporations. For any prospective employer, participation in a legal battle that ends with HTC being able to sell its devices and not bankrupted by a settlement will be a huge attraction.
@chispito I wouldn't count on that. When you get to the top of a profession - any profession, whether sports or medicine or law - that "extra 1 percent" is great.
The "top 99%" is literally the better half of the top 98%. So let's imagine that the NFL represents the top 98% of all football-playing athletes of football age in the US. The top 99% includes Drew Brees and Jared Allen. The top 98% doesn't - it has JaMarcus Russel and Dewayne White.
@archkron: Apple is going after HTC for Android. The majority of HTC phones that have been around are mainly Windows Mobile, and Apple isn't even going to dare go after Microsoft. Not to mention, stock prices do not equate as to whether patents are actually valid or not. Apple has a lot of very questionable patents in their portfolio, and if you need proof, google it. It's a similar situation to IBM, and Apple doesn't even have the real muscle IBM ever had. So bringing lawsuits into it is going to ultimately be a waste of time.
@zullnero Agreed. I found it interesting that HTC is being proxied like this at first. But, I have a theory that it's because HTC headlined the start of Android, with the Dream G1. So far, HTC has made production of the G2/Magic, Hero, Tattoo, and famous N1; and with 2 more in the works, they would technically be the company with the most Android devices. Not to mention like you said, the many devices made for WM.
@chispito
However, given the open spot, can one assume their previous representation proved inadequate, regardless of the price?
@Flasher T
As long as these guys fuck CrApple over I am happy.
@Flasher T To be honest I don't think any particular lawyer can do that much in this situation. Even though many if not all the patents are totally frivolous nonsense, the laypeople on the jury won't understand just how ridiculous most of these patents are after the tarting up by the legal team that filed the patents. I mean half the things listed were done elsewhere but it appears that Apple added a sentence about doing it on a phone and patented it.
Which is why companies have to build massive IP portfolios, since the best legal defense in this case isn't to try and argue that 20 patents are invalid since the amount of work that would require is insane and the likelihood of you actually getting all 20 invalidated is pretty much zero. You basically have to do what every company dose in this sort of case-sue Apple back by digging through your giant patent chest for a bunch of similarly ridiculous patents. Then everyone signs a cross-licensing agreement and the lawyers win.
I just hope that HTC has large enough of an IP portfolio to win this one, although since it looks like they're really trying to go after all of Android, Google will have to do something to help back HTC up here since a loss for HTC is an even bigger loss for Android.
@Flasher T
I lol'd...
@jonnythan either I'm tired, or you've got something backwards. The top 99% includes just about everybody. The top 1% would include the best. Maybe you're thinking 99th percentile?
The side with more lawyers normally wins.
Very ironic.
@UrAwFuL
An old man turned ninety-eight,
He won the lottery and died the next day....
@ChazClout He didn't die. His plane crashed on the island. ;)
@N900 and he died the next day when the others ate him for lunch.
....twas a Lost joke.
@N900
Lost upon a lot of people. (rimshot)
@ChazClout Isn't it ironic? :)
@joshuakarthik
No, actually it isn't. [referece to the song]
sigh... did that bother anyone else?
@UrAwFuL
fake Donald Melanson says: It's like rain...
LOL! Perfect timing on that one. I wonder who is dumb enough to apply at this moment in time.
@guitarfreak846
I know.... Applying for an available job after a huge recession.
Unemployment FTW! /s
@guitarfreak846
Dumb enough? I'm pretty sure it's a win-win for anyone who takes the job. You win? Awesome. You lose? Well, you have experience that a smaller firm will still find invaluable.
@chispito
lol HTC is not a small company. They might not have that many branded phones, but they probably manufacture most of the smartphones people use around the world.
@inzim
He said that if you worked with HTC for their legal department, that would look good
@inzim Totally not true they don't manufacture "most smartphones" not even close buddy.
@inzim HTC is a medium-sized company. They have a little over 5,000 employees and their gross revenues are under $4 billion.
With those kind of numbers you keep Microsoft as a friend (or partner as they like to say) and you piddle on Apple.
In regards to the merits of Apple's lawsuit, I find it hard to believe that HTC's small U. S. design house would resort to stealing Apple's patents, most that are bogus, who would want to steal that crap.
Ambien is kicking in. Better say good night before I start hallucinating.
I want a job at HTC....
Do they need a tea boy?
@ChazClout
I want to be an intern for their advertising dep.
@HardToBelieve
And I'll make you tea! WIN/WIN! :D
@ChazClout
Earl Gray. Hot.
@ChazClout
Are they also looking for a fall boy? I'm good at that.
@ChazClout chai runner?
I guess that means, Google lawyers are out on this one.
@metaesapuet I guess one person alone won't cover this. Google will be in the game
HTC: "You're hired!.... uhhh, btw... we just got hit by a massive patent lawsuit... See you on Monday!"
@ramifications
or Saturday and Sunday if you need some overtime pays..possibly..?
@GN1
"Know what, it'd be great if you could just take this stuff home and work on it there."
@HardToBelieve
"We've got about 700 pages here for you to look at. Don't forget to submit a 1000 page report when you show up for work next week. Btw, Monday will be mufti day!"
@ramifications
"We are currently recruiting for a Patent Counsel to join our Patent Team. In this position, you will join HTC America, Inc. at one of its most exciting phases" Is that for releasing awesome phones or for the lawsuit?
I suspect the new recruits will have more on their hands than being a tea mule...
I hope they do get one hell of a patent attorney and beat apple at this. I love HTC they truly do bring some great stuff to the market and push the forefront on the smartphone market innovation imho. If they get taken out of the picture the consumer will be the major loser.
They should just forward this to Eric Schmidt!
Come on Google...help a brotha out.
In all seriousness though, HTC are a pretty damned good company and have been making quality phones for a long ass time. I really don't see them having any problems with those patents. Most of them are laughable.
@DoctarPeppar
Yeah? Is that your expert opinion?
@DoctarPeppar
Google should do whatever they can to help out because if they lose it would make other manufacturer think twice about androids and want to stay away from it due to the patent troubles. maybe that was the reason why apple target htc instead of google.
@pukerocket
Yeah, it is...especially the one about "unlocking a device by interacting with an image" -- Windows Mobile has done that for years, and I suspect other operating systems have as well.
