This
TiVo Premiere screenshot with a large Comcast On Demand logo on it certainly set a few hearts aflutter yesterday when it was
released from the company, but our dreams have turned into bitter, bitter ashes: TiVo tells us this screenshot is actually just a mockup and not indicative of any actual partnership. And double-oops: that other interesting screenshot with "Friends Recommend" on the Browse screen is also a mockup, meaning our hopes for some social-media integration have also been dashed, at least for now. Oh well. Let's hope our forthcoming Premiere review units can somehow turn these frowns upside-down.
Oops I just commented.
oops maybe Comcast will buy TiVo accidentally so I can record and watch 1080i at the same time without pixelz pixel8n on the crappy Motorola Comcast DVR
@Eugene Action And charge $100 dollars a month for the service and $5 a month to "rent" the boxes. Cable companies and the consumer just never get a long.
We need Google TV
@questionexclamation Not really.
@questionexclamation we need google microchips embedded in the back of our skulls, too
@questionexclamation i think its called youtube
@questionexclamation Google is already lighting the Dark Fiber to deliver Gigabit internet in some communities so if they can have their own experimental ISP, then Google can have its own experimental television service and it could propably work off its ISP technology you would just get a Google STB and it will deliver content from the Google internet servers to your tv. Of course the only way for it to work would be if they can get networks that already broadcast on the existing tv services.
It just keeps getting worse :(
No new UI on the series 3 (that cost me $799), still no tru2way support, still only 2 tuners...
Sure, I'll still buy it, but I had expected more from TiVo, especially since it took them this long to revamp their hardware...
Wah,wah,wahhhhh
Ok, no reason at all for me to get this. Thanks Tivo, you saved me from spending $300 along with a monthly fee.
The Comcast VOD library is HUGE, along with lots of HD content. Why WOULDN'T they want to include it? Just the mere fact that so many people commented regarding that screenshot is proof that people want that access. After all it will work with RCN's VOD service, and both RCN & Comcast use Seachange VOD.
I hope your reading all of the negative tweets and comments Tivo... Your not going to make it at this rate.
@cypherx I assume its not Tivo's fault. The original deal they worked out with the cable companies involved using tru2way, and the cable companies have reneged on the promised they made to everybody on the rollout of tru2way. Even if they included it, you wouldn't be able to use it anyway until your local provider rolled out tru2way support. I assume Tivo not adopting this won't be the only impact. I assume all the tru2way promises that were made by the cable cos to Panasonic et al to get them to produce tru2way sets will also start to show up there as well. I can't imagine those companies are going forward with any future plans to build tru2way sets. It looks like Panasonic is going to a model where they're going to support CableCards only via an external box. Sure it'll be a Panasonic box, not one you rent from your cable co. But you'll have to buy it and add it to your setup, etc. And even that will be dead soon if the cablecos don't get their shit together.
Oh and what does Comcast have to say about using their trademark logo in a demo like this? I'm not sure they would be so happy.
@cypherx they circle-R'd it man...
You mean to title it "TiVo Premiere won't have Comcast On Demand -- People Pretend to Care"
that's really disappointing - was ready to pull the trigger on a Premiere in order to get Comcast OnDemand - it's surprisingly good and I miss it with my Tivo HD.
Of course the lack of Flash ads everywhere is also just a mockup.
Wow, from a marketing standpoint this is a pretty huge f-up. Did they do any sort of technical and legal review of this stuff or did they just take sone pretty colors and splash them on the screenshots?
That's because it's not "Comcast On Demand." It's now "Xfinity On Demand."
I really get tired of these kinds of 'misleading' materials from companies. If they want to include something in a mockup before the ink is dry on an agreement or whatever, just watermark it with "In progress" or "We hope" or something.
Was looking forward to potentially picking up a Factory Reconditioned Series 3 unit. Was on last night, saw them at first, went "hey!" at the price, went on later that night, Tivo's site was screwy, come back this morning...
... to them taking over with Premier. No sight of the previous Series 3 refurbs. Kinda figures.
I'd rather pay out the arse for a cableco DVR. I *was* willing to pay the $79 + a $129 1-year subscription, but I can't justify the $299 on top of the $129 as well. And of course on eBay they all go for upwards of $500, too.
don't you think this could still work as some sort of offshoot for Comcast's new watch anywhere service (watch programs on your PC by logging in to your account?)
Is On demand even possible with a regular dual stream cable card? I';m pretty sure it would require the box to have Tru2Way.
@BigPete Yeah but there were lots of RUMORS ahead of time that the next Tivo box, which we all called the Series 4 at the time, would have tru2way, and its clear it doesn't, and in fact doesn't have the hardware necessary to support it via a software update in the future. Too bad. I'm not personally that upset, but my wife always liked the CableCo VOD access we used to have, and would probably use it if it were available. Probably matters more to people on Time Warner since they're deploying SDV like crazy and the current external solution is apparently a big bag of hurt...
@Fanfoot They "could" do the return path communications via the IP network... where "they" is the cableco and not something Tivo has any direct control over.
So what does the TiVo Premiere do that the TiVo HD doesn't already do?
Besides the new UI skin I don't see much. I guess the tuning adapter is now integrated in the box? Okay, but my tuning adapter works. Netflix? Already got that on my TiVo HD too.
Is there something I'm missing?
So the series 4 "IS" true2way capable yes/no?, but the cable companies are giving Tivo the middle finger? What gives?
While I'm sure they firmly intent to have Comcast access available, I'm equally as sure that the marketeers decided it would be better to use Comcast's logo instead of RCN, who 9/10ths of the country never heard of.
If anyone is the biggest loser out of this whole "mockup" thing I'd have to say it was RCN, though they shared the stage at the announcement.
I'm angered a bit because they were pushing the whole replacement of a desktop box. It is as long as I don't intend to watch OnDemand anymore.
