USB-IF certifies 50 SuperSpeed USB products, leaves five shrouded in mystery
That 80-port hub you bought to increase your military might? Obsolete. Novelty thumb drives? Their days are numbered as the USB-IF announces the completion of SuperSpeed USB (3.0) compliance on 50 devices. Yes, of all the countless, teeming masses of USB 2.0-compliant whatsits out there, a whole 50 3.0 devices currently officially exist, ranging from PCIe adapters to... well... ExpressCard adapters. Yes, there are a few legitimate devices in there, like HP's Envy 15 laptop and WD's My Book 3.0 external hard drive, but that the vast majority are adapters says a lot about how early this format is. Of the 50 said to be certified only 45 are listed on the site, meaning there are five left unidentified, ready for a stunning, blue-plugged unveiling. It'll surely be a magical event.

Brando and Thanko better get on the ball. I want my USB 3.0 transforming rubber duck/cot wrench/HDD dock/thumb drive!
@Christian Martin
I'm using a Brando 3.0 USB drive enclosure with my Thinkpad W510, neither of which are are on the list. I put an SSD inside the Brando... great performance.
@ron97062 I submit that said enclosure does not transform, cannot be used to assemble cots and is not the ideal bath time accessory.
Dang, I just upgraded my parents computer to USB 2.0. When we got it back in 2003, Dell only gave us a choice between firewire and USB 1.0, you could not have both firewire and USB 2.0 at the same time. I chose wrong.
@yankees368
Don't worry, it'll be a while before there is a whole ecosystem of 3.0 devices.
@yankees368 Really? Because I had a Dell desktop back in 2003, and that had USB 2.0 as standard on the motherboard.
@r3loaded Yeah. I'm not sure why, maybe it was just Dell's screwed up ordering system. It would not let you select both Firewire and USB 2.0.
Well... we've got bluetooth, blu-ray, and now blue colored cables for USB 3.0. Think we can get a little orange in the mix maybe?
And i don't mean juice clogging my keyboard... not again... not again.
A certain company with a fruity name would be my prime suspect for a company that would want this sort of announcement to remain a secret for a while longer.
@Nitesh Incoming lawsuit, since Apple probably filed a patent claim for "universal high speed plug design."

@shadowj0
+1
@shadowj0 Well played, Sir (or Madam, whichever it may be).
@Christian Martin
It's Sir, Sir (or Madam, whichever it may be).
im still looking for a big (like x20) USB hub with a reasonable price... but i dont think i need USB3 that fast... i'm fine with USB2... for my external HDD i have esata, what would i need USB 3 for?
@Kaboof Well, there are several reasons to prefer eSata over USB3.0. Speed is definitely one of them. MyCE just wrote an extensive article on USB3.0, you might want to check it out: http://www.myce.com/article/usb3-superspeed-a-first-look-26421/
@Kaboof USB's big advantage over eSata is still that it delivers power over the same cable as data (now more than ever with USB 3.0). Not such an important feature to everyone, but to the people that it does matter to, it matters a lot. I would never lug around an external HDD if I had to bring a power adapter along with it (not to mention find an outlet whenever I wanted to use it). I'll take a drive of half the capacity if it means I can bus power it with USB.
Again, not everyone's priorities run that way, but USB has very definite advantages aside from speed...
@OddManOut and @Beetje I didnt think about the power but it isnt that important for me too... sure it would be a power supply less, but im not often carrying around my 3,5inch hdd... but looking at my PC I see a Keyboard plugged in, a mouse, a gamepad, my mobilephone (just to load it), the printer, my webcam... and im not sure if any of these will really benefit from usb3.. perhaps the printer... but the other stuff?
USB 3.0 things I am waiting for include . . . some new audio interfaces.
Rounding error?
i bet we'll see an ssd with sata3 and usb3 soon. thats gonna be a fast drive in your gold lined pocket.
OH GREAT! There's that word again....MAGICAL!
brace yourselves, more adapters
Good. The ball has started rolling and hopefully by the time I got tired of this Quad-Core PC, It will be widely available on most Mobos.
To quote Kanye West, "I don't like it unless it's BRAND NEW".
I hope USB 3.0 can eventually replace ethernet, HDMI, eSATA and even power cables and bring us some cheaper products.
Aren't there 5 Macbook Pro models now? ...darn just checked it...6 models.......nice wishing for that in the next mbp update
@nickershocker
True, there are *currently* 6 base configs of MBP, but these would obviously be new models and there may only be 5 of them. Regardless of the numbers game, this stinks of apple secrecy.
Dugg for using SS. ahh the good old days of Super Sports :)
(wait, this isn't digg...)
"It'll surely be a magical event."
But not "magical and revolutionary" like the iPad, right?
When i saw this 50-year-old pic, i stopped reading the article. :)
is that even a real laptop? cause it looks kinda made-of-paper-y
Hah, that laptop doent look real, maybe its a 3d rendered one. Anyways these guys are constantly adding usb3.0 products to there list.
