Didn't Nokia sue Apple first? Unless you're a pure bred European why would Apple be considered the villian here?
Why should Nokia's patent be more defensible than Apple's?
What I really think is going on is people are upset that an American company is doing well v. their European competitor.
Those mocking the ipad are a few weeks away from looking like total fools - again.
For all the criticism the Apple TV gets, there isn't a product in it's class selling more HD movies and TV shows. Last I checked apple tv did over 2x the revenue (movies and tv) than xbox 369, which would be the closest competitor. Sales were up 35% over last year. Which comparable product did 35% growth? It hasn't done well only in comparison to Apple products. For anyone else it would be a decent hit.
@jaffreywali Really interesting figures providing context on AppleTV.
I've always thought it was a really great product, that just need a subscription style plan to really soar (of course, this is the exact same kind of plan that the networks are terrified to allow Apple to have, because they also know that it would result in the end of the modern ad-based TV paradigm).
@glamajamma Neat poll, but so what? Even with "most people probably" not knowing with the AppleTV is, AppleTV is still responsible for over twice the digital media sales than the 360 -- with a fraction of the install base.
So your argument must be either a) AppleTV owners buy lots of media, which the media companies like, and it's growing or b) Nobody buys media off their 360.
You should ask your assistant if either one of those disproves what jaffreywali said.
@glamajamma I'd be curious to know how AppleTV compares against it's real competitors to.
Amazon VOD -- Doesn't play on people's TVs
Hulu -- Doesn't play on people's TVs
Since neither of those are competitors, that leaves us with your example of Netflix Instant Streaming, which I agree I would love to see a match up against. Unfortunately, the studios and networks refuse to allow Apple the opportunity to offer a subscription based service -- wonder why; worried about the success they would have perhaps? -- so we're then talking about a for-free streaming service on one hand, and a buying and rental service on the other. Which also aren't comparable.
The only thing to compare the AppleTV to is something like the 360. Which was jaffreywali's point in the first place.
But you can compare them to whatever you like. I'm sure Blockbuster sells a lot more videos than AppleTV too.
Netflix does not have $ associated with their online service. Hulu and Amazon can be compared in terms of revenue, and Apple TV generates more revenue than Hulu and Amazon and Cinema Now combined! Actually, Apple TV video sales revenue is higher than YouTube! Last I checked no one was saying YouTube is a business failure! Apple TV is by FAR the most popular online movie rental platform. If Apple can get subscription or add supported content....
Apple is building that $1b facility.... To host data and services.
@RidleyGriff You are wrong about a lot of your statements, but arguing with you is like trying to convince the Catholic Church the Earth is round in the 17th century. People liek you just create your own reality. By the way Amazon VOD is all over TV sets

One could argue that there is a slight difference between the tech behind GSM and the tech behind "slide to open".
@jaffreywali
Nobody owns the Apple TV. Hell most people probably don't know what it is. Here lets ask my Administrative Assistant.
Nope he never heard of it.
He knows what a 360 and a PS3 are though.

I am not that impressed with them selling more videos then the 360.
I wonder how much content they send versus the real competitors like Amazon VOD, Netflix Instant, or HULU.
