Mio's Tegra-powered Moov V780 puts maps, 720p video, and the interwebs on dashboards
We're not suggesting playing a 720p vid while at the wheel, but Mio's Moov V780 -- or "premium PND," as they call it -- sure is a jack of all trades. We spent sometime playing around with the 7-inch tablet at the company's CeBIT press conference and came away surprisingly impressed with the entire experience. It's tapered edges and smooth plastic back remind us a lot of the Dell Mini 5, though Mio's gone with a NVIDIA Tegra chip (we were told Tegra 2, but our friends at jkkmobile sneaked a peak at the device's console and discovered it was apparnetly rocking the progenitor Tegra chip, at least on the show floor) and created a nice 3D user interface on top of Windows CE. Though it doesn't support multitouch, the capacitive screen made flicking through the coverflow-like interface a breeze and the virtual keyboard was a pleasure -- those who wish to use the device to fire off e-mails can always pick up the carrying case pictured above. So yes, overall we definitely like the Moov V780 and its Internet tablet/PND capabilities... but not enough to pay the 599 euros the company expects to sell it for. Perhaps the video below will convince you, but for now we'll be waiting for this one to drop in price when it starts shipping this summer.

Pointless?!?
@PlatinumSkeet
huh? i thought a lot of companies claiming revolutionary designs and products could learn a thing or two here...
@PlatinumSkeet
I don't understand how this is a revolutionary design or what this device is doing that you can't get right now. All it did was just add a keyboard to a touchscreen MID. You know a similar product that just did this and has more functionality?
http://www.apple.com/ipad/
All the stuff this device is doing has been done before it's just being done with Tegra. I would like to see this on a cellphone with this functionality than just a MID that costs more than a large touchscreen tablet that does the same thing for less...
@PlatinumSkeet
I can put this in a pocket, unlike the iPad, and I can actually read text on it, unlike on a cell phone/ipod touch/iPhone.
Not at that price, but I could see myself using one AND actually carrying it with me.
@whiskers Id say you should get your eyes checked if you can't read text on an iPhone, iPod, or iPad. I mean, I think the iPad is a huge FAIL, but your comment was just ignorant and stupid.
Posted from my iPhone (where I READ the article and your stupid comment)
@PlatinumSkeet
I was so offended by that price point(which works out to be $945 US) that I had to repost again on how ridicules that price point is...... PLEASE Explain to me how on EARTH this price point makes sense by any stretch of the imagination... We working on a Military budget or something? what are the screws like $5 a piece???
another 50 dollars you could get the following setup:
--------------------------------------------------------
ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE (11 Hour Battery)
$329.17
Garmin nüvi 285W/285WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen "Bluetooth"
(Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic)
$119.99
Zune HD 32 GB Video MP3 Player (Platinum)
$249.97
Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD 5.8-Inch In-Dash
Touchscreen Double-Din DVD Multimedia A/V Receiver
$309.99
-------------------------------------------------------
keep it.... I'd rather have my sanity.
Windows CE? Come one, on Tegra you could put a full-blown operating system, like some Linux distro for example. That would also give a huge base of ready to use programs, since any open source program can be easily ported to any processor (and that is the main advantage of open source - portability, you can port the software to newer processor even if the vendor does not exist any more).
@stoffer
This is a good concept for phones coming later to have. Have put a dual-OS like android/linux or winmo/linux combo on a phone added in with a small keyboard to use. I'd like it on my next phone but, I couldn't see myself buying this standalone device to do these small tasks for how much it costs...
@stoffer My thoughts exactly. Especially at this price point, Windows CE cripples it and makes it not useful for more than basic media tasks and some basic web browsing. With a full linux install like Ubuntu Remix or Android, this could be a powerful beast.
@stoffer I would love to see this with WinMo 7.
I wouldn't mind an optional keyboard like that for a Mini5
@beckhams777
Agreed, that is a nice case and would be awesome for the Dell Mini 5.
Very cool but too expensive. Love the windows CE interface design though...wish more companies would use CE as their platform and then dress it up like that.
Keyboard looks nice. Could definitely do without the gloss black case and bezel.
Thats gonna make for one helluva carputer :)
^^^ @ pachi72, that's what they said about the iphone and android, look what happened. Joanna, you have a nice lovely voice.
After looking at the pics, this thing looks massive, lol. Looks way bigger than a Dell Mini 5.
Very nice concept. I really like this idea! .. dual purposes!
You guys totally miss the point of this. This is a CARPC replacement. In this space, Windows CE trumps Android and IPhone. I am big IPhone fan but have used CE for over 15 years. CE has more Navigation apps period. They have off-road apps, they have more maps. Go to Honduras or Brazil and see if your Android or iPhone has maps. It also has more Car related apps such as ODB-2 car diagnostic readers. It is running Opera as the browser. You can run core-player that supports every known codec EXCEPT ONVP6 .FLV (porn site FLVs). Which is much more mature than both CE and Android.
Again, this is a CARPC replacement. I bet this is meant to be sold in all over the world. People in Russia, Hungary, Greece, Indonesia will pick this before a Android or iPhone just because there are native apps for "ALL regions" I wouldn't be surprise if you can hook up telestial tv since all the Chinese & Eastern European knock-off PNDs do.
Get it?
@HDD
yeah I agree MOSTLY... they lost me at no bluetooth????
WTF? for what they're selling this for it should freakn have bluetooth and a way to connect your cellphone to it or bluetooth speakers etc... i mean seriously, what are they thinking??? 700 euros is like $945 US. how much does it cost to add bluetooth you do the math...
Wonder if it can hold Ubuntu or BackTrack?
Windows CE, seriously? Is there any app for this system?
how come less capable tegra devices are more expensive than atom ones?
That UI is the Tegra's carousel UI that didn't materialize. Why is it Nvidia claims that they have the best SoC but you will rarely find it on devices. Nvidia is all talk.
I want a dock like that for the Mini 5
