USmart's MC-1 claims 'world's smallest' title, certainly wins over our hearts
Some people have soft spots for puppies and panda bears; we have them for tiny laptops. Claiming to be the world's smallest computer, USmart's 4.8-inch MC-1 is about the size of a man's wallet yet manages to pack the guts of a netbook. That's right in that tiny little chassis is a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage. What it doesn't have is some sort of fan; when we put the little guy in our hand it was quite toasty. Wondering how in the world one would navigate Windows XP on such a small screen? Like the 4.8-inch UMID MBook BZ, it has a resistive touchscreen and comes with a stylus, but USmart will also sell an external touchpad / keyboard combo that's bound to be more comfortable. We're strongly questioning the practicality of this $300 device and its title of "world's smallest computer," but can you really argue with something so adorable? How about you tell us after checking out the video after the break.

This is our new Clamshell Phone.
@Dick Lynch
Or my next device to try installing linux on
@Dick Lynch
If it would host a sim card (and a BT radio) I'd be hunting for it.
no fan? quite toasty? my dell mini 9 has no fan and it stays quite cool around 100 Fahrenheit .
@bobthetechguy ... and is twice the size of this for better energy dissipation
Why am I already trying to find reasons for buying one?
@oldpass56
Because with 4GB of storage its gonna be a challenge to stop Windows XP and a few apps from running out the main memory and slowing the machine down along with all the pop ups such as system memory low
I base that on having a Eeepc 901 where you have to regulary delete files such as app cache on the main 4GB memory
Oh and with XP on a 4.8 inch screen your gonna be needing a very good magnifying glass to read anything, its bad enough on a 9inch screen
@OCEAN CLAK
If you watch the video it's pointed out that the storage is on SD card, which while slow can certainly be taken past 4GB. I'd admit that SD is probably not the fastest thing to load an OS from, but whatever, maybe they'll do an SSD version?
It says the video is unavailable
@Dunch And we're up...
@Joanna Stern
It CONSTANTLY says "Loading Video Information"
I wish you guys would use YouTube... Or something that works other than Viddler... I don't even know why the message stays on there, making me have to go to the engadget profile page on viddler, just to watch a video... =.=
$300 it's cheaper than a netbook... And the dame power as one.. But it's really small.
No point in netbook any more tbh.
@geekthree
No more point in a netbook? You're joking, right? Key word here is practicality.
yes, smallest laptop.
Or biggest UMPC...
Omg, iPhone killer!
*saracasm*
@Spiky haired boy
Omg, iPad killer!
*no sarcasm*
I'm kidding, i'm kidding!
Or am i...
Can it calculate Pi to 17 trillion places?
@joelaf
Eventually.
@joelaf
Easy as pi.
I was just looking at that keyboard/touchpad.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32245
I'm really debating on getting it.
@p0p0 I have this exact wireless touch pad. I use it for my media center PC that needs the occasional keyboard or mouse action. It works great! The shift and arrow keys are in a very wonky place - otherwise it's great.
@delly
I use it with my Toshiba TG01, works great.
@p0p0
I have one also. For HTPC.. I recommend it. Much better than a normal full sized keyboard and mouse. The touchpad doesn't have a scroll function sadly, or it would be perfect.
Cost me somewhere around £40 or so from Maplin.
desktop operating systems are not practical for devices this small in my opinion
I'll take 5! Where do I sign?
If only it had a hello kitty logo on it, it would sell millions.
awwwwwwwwww!
That..
that..
Is what I want!!
Where has it been all my life?
@tylersmyler
It's been waiting for you since the mid 90's, it's called the Toshiba Libretto and it rocked.
This whole UMPC/netbook thing is so 15 years ago. Hehe
Even this can Multi Task lol.
@techlord and not much larger than an iphone lol
so cute!
I want to see when some fool tries to hackint0sh it. lmao
is it me or the Sony Vaio P looks smaller than this, or at least it's narrower
world's smallest computer with world's largest trackpad?...
I guess no one there heard of a ipod touch
Do want! Just hope importing to the UK doesn't cost too much...
So this bad boy can look at naughty things. Portible pron device
I think it's really ugly...
@AckbarsFist
looks fisher price in terms of color and styling
Hmmm... my OQO 2+ has a 1.8Ghz Atom, has 2Gb RAM,128GB storage, and an Oled screen....Cost? Free with layoff -> unemployment.
if they made it a touchscreen device without keyboard then supply a keyboard hookup, that would be perfect!
I'm pretty sure I saw a young asian girl with one of these/something similar the other day. I think she had her phone plugged into it and was on WLmessenger.
Cute - I wonder what battery life is like? Not for me though. The notion ink Adam or MS Courier are more appealing(though also more expensive)
@AstroSeven
I don't get why you have to point out that she was Asian.....
@Joseph9307
yeah , i don't get why he even had to mention it was a girl. he is sexist and racist. jk.
Windows 7 wants in
@AlienSix
Windows 7 needs 16GB of memory just to run, this netbook only has 4GB of memory
@OCEAN CLAK thats so wrong.. i nlited my copy of win 7 to 5Gb installed and i could of slimmed it more but i wanted some key features.
@bobthetechguy
COULD HAVE
Is it better than the OQO?
