Apple shares hit record high on iPad shipping announcement
Note to Microsoft, HP, Dell, and whoever else wants to get in the next-gen tablet game: your concepts are nice -- even spectacular, in the case of Courier -- but Apple's about to actually ship a product, and investors are taking note. AAPL shares hit a record high of $219.36 this afternoon after the news that iPad pre-orders would begin on March 12 with an April 3rd delivery day, and they closed at $218.95, which is up around four percent. That's got us curious: given the choice between actually purchasing the iPad and twiddling your thumbs waiting for unannounced, unpriced, and even possibly un-real devices like the Dell Mini 5, the HP Slate, or the Courier, are you taking the sure thing or holding out for your vaporous dream device? Hit us up in comments -- and be nice to each other, it's the weekend.

Microsoft Courier is certainly the way forward!
@lsx
I am VERY excited about the Courier. I'm a graphic designer and can totally see myself using it the way it was presented in the video. If it's priced right I'll wait in line for it, even around a corner.
@reader1
Sorry, just so I understand... you're suggesting that it would be better if it removes the web browser?
The only question that springs to mind after reading that... is just why?
@lsx Yup...waiting for the Courier.
@reader1
hahah, I gotta say, even as a troll - that is a brilliant statement
@lsx Maybe I should taking the money I won't be spending on an iPad or courier and buy a few shares of Apple. Oh wait, when the iPad fails It's gonna drop 10%. NVM...
IPad is soooooooo far from my dream device. Courier might be the ticket.
@lsx
I too will take the higher road of "holding out for my vaporous dream device" - that is Courier.
@reader1
I'm beginning to think you work for Microsoft.... Its like you pretend to be an Apple fanboy to put Apple in a bad light. It's fanboys like you that make people hate Apple.
@reader1
Have you not been taking your meds lately man?
@lsx
100% agree. The courier is doing something new. The ipad is a large ipod, which has its place and the iphone does too. On my iphone I make phone calls, send text messages, play a couple of games, use the alarm clock, and get addresses. Thats it. The ipad would be a large version of those functions, the size of the device takes aways its utility for those things.
@lsx
I shall wait for my vaporous devices. Thank you [=
@lsx Yeah, somehow I got a hunch that this report was manipulated.. Seeing the source came from Yahoo news.. Oh well let's see how this one performs over the market. Reactions: http://bit.ly/apple-ipad-why-why-not-get-it
Courier ftw! :D
@lsx
The 2 devices are fairly different. I find myself aligned with the Courier: basically, the iPad is a consumer's device that's meant to consume media whereas the Courier is a sketchbook like those that creative people tend to keep. Courier might have very limited market appeal, whereas the iPad may be much more marketable, but that's only because most people are consumers and not creators. If I was trying to make money, I'd side with the iPad. If I wanted to support a device that I felt was better for society in that it draws out a creative spirit, I'd back the Courier.
I'm an architect, so I'm always sketching and what not, so the iPad does not interest me, the Courier does. However, in fact, neither device really fascinates me, because the 2 screens are great, but cumbersome, whereas a slate with functionality similar to Courier might be my most desirable device. One handed. In fact, I'm sure my ideal device already exists... a cheaper version of this. Fujitsu Stylistic or Motion Computing.
Courier wins for me between the 2.
@lsx I personally am going to stick with my iPod Touch for a while.
@lsx
wow.
Between NIL-ay and Toplotskii you've got a helluva team at Engadget...for propaganda.
One tells us to get our credit cards ready, the other tells us that devices which seem obviously more capable are "vaporware". Can you two pull your heads out of your ass? People are sick of paying for a brand name. They want innovation and ADVANCEMENT. Microsoft, for all it's past faults, looks like its going to give us that. You two dipshits are the ones who are going to be caught with your pants down when everyone else around you has better devices.
You both also treat readers condescendingly and like they don't need good arguments for every POS that Apple puts out.
In summary, your both full of shite.
Interest in iPad: ...
Interest in Courier: HOLY EFFING HECK I WANT ONE!
SRSLY I CAN HAS COURIER PLZ? KTHXBAI! :D
And AAPL shares will hit a record low when sales result comes few months after April.
@MM OBVIOUS
You'll be deleted once Nilay reads your comments. But you're right.
@lsx
I'm waiting for the Courier, too. If it never comes out, then I won't have lost anything because none of the alternatives are anywhere near as capable.
I need a tablet to organize my notes and drawings. I could buy an iPad right now to watch videos and surf the internet, but then I haven't exactly solved my problem, have I.
@MM OBVIOUS
First, I ranked you up...but not for your spelling.
Secondly, why so harsh?...it's the weekend.
@Chefgon
"I could buy an iPad right now to watch videos and surf the internet"
to watch SOME videos
Try not to get so worked up over gadgets. It's pretty sad.
@lsx
The Courier is Microsoft's version of Etch-A-Sketch. How nice. No, wait. The real Etch-A-Sketch actually works. The Courier is just vaporware. I understand people getting excited, but please keep it in perspective. You've only been watching an animated cartoon about a device that really doesn't exist. Microsoft is only showing off this device again to save face. You'd think if it really existed, Ballmer wouldn't have been playing with an HP Slate. I hope there is some working prototype because I'd honestly like to see the real device in action.
@lsx
Id rather stick with my MSFT stock
@MosesusedaniPad
That's exactly why the stock was up. A real product with a real ship date.
I'm still waiting to see the Hp Slate in action so I won't hold my breath for the Courier.
@Oghowie
HEY EVERYONE! ENGADGET IS FABRICATING DOWN-RANKS!
Look at the responses to my comment above. General agreement(yeah sorry for being a bit angry, I'm better now.)
Look at the DIGGS of the courier announcement vs. the iPad. Currently 1026 vs. 96
Again. Full of shit.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
iPad fails,.. hahah just shut up.
@MM OBVIOUS R u some kind of moron?!?!? U need some negativity, so I'll give u some negativity. This goes to the rest of you jokers jizzing in your pants over the 'courier'! Are you guys so desperate that you get excited over something that doesn't exist??!? I think every company should start releasing concepts, to get idiots like you hysterical with excitement. Of course engadget and the media are going to give kore attention to the ipad, it's about to be released...FOOL! IT'S REALITY! I'm amazed engadget are even giving this courier so much attention! the chances of the courier being released, close to none, the chances of it being releases within the next 3 years - NONE! the ipad would be far beyond whatever MS decides to release, just how windows phone 7 is TOO LATE. seriously, get a brain, or go to school!
@to86
You're an idiot.
@UnsilentMajority
Guess it's too hard to get your head around the fact there will be dfferent apps suited to a larger screen than an iPhone
@Please forgive me
I completely agree with you. One thing that I find hard to swallow is apple's move from pleasing the "creative type" and moving into pleasing the "consumer type." I feel apple is happy with the G4 power book design because aside from chiclet keyboards, a magnetic power cord, and increased speeds they are happy making me purchase plug ins (Wacom pad) to meet my creative needs.
Obviously there's more money jamming $1 priced media down people's throats but I feel that I (creative type) have been forgotten by apple over the past few years.
I just expect more from apple design-wise. They mastered simple, now start pushing forward, please.
@Chefgon
I am waiting for the computers from Avatar, they are so much more capable than the iPad.
@lsx I think everyone should be saying "I'm excited about the IDEA of Courier." Since it's not a product yet. It doesn't have a price or a ship date, or anything other than a barely-prototype and some interface videos.
Courier looks better for journaling and graphic-thinking people. iPad seems better for content consumption, casual gaming, and basic content creation.
To each his own.
"are you taking the sure thing or holding out for your vaporous dream device?"
Was this supposed to sound as smug as it came across?
@Giantenemycrab Secondly, I think it's a bit bias to call the iPad "the sure thing." Sure, it is shipping, but it could be complete garbage or have first generation bugs and kinks. This is the problem here on Engadget, it sounds like you guys have already made up your mind on the iPad. I don't know if you guys have a review unit or something, but at least wait until you've fully tested the thing out before dubbing it "the sure thing."
Unless you simply meant that it is "the sure thing" to ship. In which case, I suppose you are right. In the same sense, it is a "sure thing" to wait by a buffalo's asshole all day. It's a sure thing something is going to happen.
@Giantenemycrab I haven't made up my mind at all, and I just called the Courier "spectacular." I just know that you can buy one of these things and you can't buy any of the others.
@Nilay Patel
But Why so ,much insistence on calling the rest vaporware? I remember when then iPad was just vaporware, and yet there was so much news on it to last a decade. I just say give the other gadgets their limelight. Just like people waited out for the iPad, so will other wait for the vaporware that is the Courier, Dell Mini 5, and HP slate.
@SetThemStraight Because they are vaporware.. Seems somewhat obvious.
@Giantenemycrab To be fair, it's "a sure thing" because it's something that is real, that you can buy, that exists.
When will we be able to buy Courier, and what will it look like then? They've already drastically revamped the look to vamp the iPad. That tells me MS is working from a reactionary place, which is going to take longer for them to get to market with it.
In any case, we don't know. It's a set of pictures, that get announced to steal thunder from other products (the iPad). At the moment, whether it is real or not, the Courier is the definition of Vaporware.
That's not condescending, it's just the case. When a real Courier that we can buy materializes, it won't be anymore.
@Nilay Patel
Gotta hold out. The Courier all the way! Also: screw the iPhone OS with delusions of grandeur, it's still a crappy, overly simplistic piece of software.
@Giantenemycrab
Cause that which isn't is vapourware. Apple announced and is delivering rather than parading around for a year.
As for engadget having made their mind up, I recommend going back and reading their opinions post the iPad launch, rather not made up I'd say.. have so many minds already forgotten that article?
What Apple showed at launch was average. They could have showed it as a thin client, as all sorts of awesome things via any number of productive apps that would be game changers on the bigger screen but nope, it plays a game and reads a book.
@Giantenemycrab
"holding out for your vaporous dream device?"
Perfect description of Engadget and the iPad
@noodles2k
I don't know if I'm going to get a tablet, but I know that if I do it won't be the iPad. Perhaps one of the others will impress.
How is the Mini 5 vaporware? Doesn't Engadget have one? I guess we have very different definitions of vaporware.
I see the smug hipster crowd continues to expand exponentially.
@Kris91
Oh please, share your wisdom with us.
@tupelo
sorry, wrong person I replied to. a camel wide and a pale ale will have that effect.
@Kris91 Is that what we're calling the vast hordes of anti-Apple zealots that are dominating gadget blogs these days?
It's very chic to hate Apple, very hip to like Google. Yawn.
@Kris91
I know and it's rather frightening. Who would have thought that the day would come when you could spot a smug hipster not because they had something Apple but because they had something that wasn't. I can sense smug Android/Zune HD hipsters coming from blocks away. I can't wait until the Courier comes out, it's going to be Apple smugness from the 00's times 100.
