Apple shares hit record high on iPad shipping announcement
Note to Microsoft, HP, Dell, and whoever else wants to get in the next-gen tablet game: your concepts are nice -- even spectacular, in the case of Courier -- but Apple's about to actually ship a product, and investors are taking note. AAPL shares hit a record high of $219.36 this afternoon after the news that iPad pre-orders would begin on March 12 with an April 3rd delivery day, and they closed at $218.95, which is up around four percent. That's got us curious: given the choice between actually purchasing the iPad and twiddling your thumbs waiting for unannounced, unpriced, and even possibly un-real devices like the Dell Mini 5, the HP Slate, or the Courier, are you taking the sure thing or holding out for your vaporous dream device? Hit us up in comments -- and be nice to each other, it's the weekend.

...and a record low a week after delivery.
The only purpose the ipad serves is for surfing the internet (non-flash sites) while taking a dump on the toilet.
@madmac Nope, that is not how it works. The market cap is the estimated value of the company, not the estimated value of the profit which you are assuming. Instead, using your numbers and having investors wishing for e.g. 10% on invested money, Apple would have to sell 4m iPads (per year), which sounds doable.
So can we really blame madoff for exploiting the rampant idiocy of investors? Release him I say, I think his point was made.
@Wwhat
Can you blame him for lying to people and stealing their money?
Uh, yes. Yes, you can.
Nice
Wow, this actually surprises me. As an AAPL stock holder I'm pleased, but as an Apple fan I'm still pretty disappointed with the iPad overall.
I tend to read the "disappeared" comments first, on this site. They seem to be the most interesting ones. Certainly the ones that get most comments. Thanks to all you Microsoft employees - and dependents - for helping me save time by your generous multi-voting.
Courier! Courier! Courier!
Be nice? REALLY? Why? You sure weren't in your post. "Possibly un-real"? Quite the vapid comments there.
Quite difficult to compare Apple's stock rise when they have more than two times less shares on the market than HP, MS etc.
Apple- 906M
HP- 2.36B
MS- 8.77B
Dell- 1.96B
Apple has less shares on the market which drives up the price. If I"m to be honest, I doubt any of them will be a hit on the market.
iPad = iPhone + massive amounts of pressure from a giant rolling pin.
Simple as that. As much as Apple has done within the past decade they are now at the head of the pack and struggling for innovation. iPhone 3gs vs 3g? Yeah, it's faster but not hardly a meaningful upgrade over it's predecessor. The same can be said about the iPod touch, revolutionary at its' inception but they are really struggling to move beyond incremental hardware and feature upgrades. It reminds me of Canon with their DSLR's. Difference between a 30d and 40d? Not much that truly mattered. Difference between a 40d and 50d? Same case. Then they began to realize Nikon gaining market share at a blistering rate and what happens? The 7d is created, the first real attempt at more than incremental upgrades. (I'm disregarding the 5d mkII at the moment simply because I consider it to me more targeted at professionals than your average DSLR consumer) Apple is at that point. They've enjoyed being top dog for a while now, but if they can't come up with some real innovation soon, their customer base is going to start realizing that just because it's got a fruit stamped on it, it doesn't mean it's the best out there.
I can't wait for the Courier. I mean, I CAN'T wait. So I'll get an iPad. When/if the Courier arrives, I'll look at it.
I'm not worried about buyer's remorse. I'd like flash, but it's not that important. Multitasking would be handy for a few tasks. Maybe the next firmware upgrade will give the iPad more of that.
Even if it is just a big, higher resolution iPod Touch, I can think of many ways it will be useful. And when I outgrow it, which I will, I think it will still be useful as a picture frame that you can pick up and browse the web on, or play a cool game.
Maybe I'll give it to my mom, or one of my brothers (but not my sister, because I'm already going to give her my Kindle once I get the iPad).
In its place I will then have a 3rd generation iPad, or maybe a MS Courier. The future looks bright.
I wonder how many people are going to buy the ipad , probably less than the people how have bumped up the stock think. when you can get a more powerful netbook for less dosh.
You know what? I emplore, no Beg every consumer on the planet to boycott Apple. I like there products. But I do not like Apple's Monopolous attitude toward innovation and competition. I for one am starting right now. I will never ever own an Apple product while they're practicing these Monopoly tactics. Apple is acting like they invented everything involving computing. Not for me. And I tell you I'm going on a warpath. Every person I can find who's gonna buy a new phone, I'm have a little talk with. So at least they'll think twice about Apple. I'm gonna do my part. What they are doing is not only unethical but just outright Un-American. Remember Microsoft. Stop making excuses for Apple. They don't invent. They do what the Japanese were doing. Buy the tech, steal the tech, refine the tech, sell the tech and then say we invented the tech. And oh how we cried foul. Look at Sony now. Apple is already worse than Microsoft ever was. Now they're going for another level of foul.
Boycott APPLE
iPad is not such a great device. It even lacks a front camera for video calls. Just an expensive gadget that does less that your notebook and your phone.
@jashsayani
$500 isn't really expensive.
@(Unverified) It is expensive for its functionality. $30,000 is cheap for an Audi A4, because the price justifies its functionality. But the $500 iPad is almost useless. Can't your laptop do everything that the iPad does??
@Wesscoast
Actually investors should actually use their brain and think and do minimum research and not expect a return that's 3 times bigger than any other company or person can offer and not get sus-picious.
An my point is that this shows beyond any doubt that a majority of investors are dumb as bricks, and you can see how the economy of nigeria manages to float on it.
P.S I think I'll start using the word spіc from now on, I'm puketatstically sick of not being able to use the word sus-picious on the freaking internet
@Wwhat
Damn spіcs are fucking up america.
(forgot to actually use it)
And ironically the truth is the opposite because it's the ghostsly white idiots that think up all that censorship, I guess I could demonstratively use it in reverse: 'Damn spіcs are not ruining america' :)
it seems nearly everyone is missing the point here. big iPod? doesn't do what you want? no one can say this until we start to see the apps that are already being thought up for this thing. personally? having carried 10+ £40 textbooks around UCL everyday means that being able to keep them all on something that weighs the same as a bag of sugar already has me sold. and before anyone explains that your microsoft/open source/vapourware of choice will do this as well - the same was said about mp3 players when the first iPod came out. go figure.
