Sony VAIO Z with Quad SSD stripped down and explained by its project leader
For the average geek like us, there's nothing more satisfying than watching a gadget skillfully torn apart by its creator. That's why we're slightly envious of Engadget Chinese, who saw Sony VAIO Z Series project leader, Takamitsu Kasai, explaining the differences between the old and new VAIO Z literally part by part. Hightlights include Sony's proprietary Quad SSD (so not user-upgradable, sadly), a redesigned heatsink to accommodate the new chips' higher TDP (thermal design power), and various features of the "one-piece milled aluminum" and "hybrid carbon" chassis. Of course, all we really care about are photos of the naked VAIO Z, so go ahead and gorge yourselves after the jump.

Beautiful laptop...price is crazy though.
@DoctarPeppar Yeah. That MacBook looks really nice indeed.

Engadget can you please just make it so comments get deleted if they get downranked more than 5-10 times?

Oh and by the way, last time I checked the macbooks and macbook pros haven't been updated with newer intel CPUs since JUNE of last year. The Vaios have already been updated with better drives (quad ssd = omfgz), better cpus, and faster ram. Why would anyone want to buy a macbook or macbookpro NOW? Their parts are obsolete.
@DoctarPeppar Because they still look ten times better than those crap sony VAIO. LOL at the name: VAIO :D

A true apple user -- cares more about looks than functionality. You're right at home.
@DoctarPeppar Don't worry I was kidding... Sony Apple and Dell( Only Adamo) make the best looking notebooks out there. can't say the same for other manufacturers
@(Unverified)
You do know that Apple hired a bunch of former Sony employees a few years ago.
@daytripper And it was still Jonathan Ive's work :) Not former Sony employees lol.
@DoctarPeppar lol "once piece milled aluminium" as oppose to "unibody"... this one comparison pretty much sums up why apple's so much better at MARKETING
@DoctarPeppar
You sir, must not have used an Apple computer for a considerable amount of time then. I used Windows for 12 years. Once, I first received my MacBook Pro, I admit, I had some buyers remorse because I was unable to use OS X properly. After 5 days, I never wanted to use Windows again. Once you go Mac IS computing with enjoyment.
I LOVE my Vaio, and am excited for when I will need to get another notebook. Because I will probably get another Vaio. Its just a very reliable computer.
Oh Sony.
The translated comments are f-ing hilarious:
Chen has a good ...
XD really funny too prominent a light-emitting logo
VAIO is brought to you see demolition
APPLE is a wait to be used to show me what am I to do otherwise briefing briefing XD
@glamajamma Big Push!
@artissco
LMAO,
Big Push for you too!
@(Unverified) And you as well, kind stranger! (probably killed the joke)
Maybe not such a good idea to dismantle the thing in front of the Chinese as they will have 'their' version out within days at 1/8 the price.
@FFGUY yeah because Sony assembles its Vaios in a top secret factory deep in the heart of Japan surrounded by radar jammers and missile silos.
@aniym
Your description of this factory sounds like a game of Zaxxon.
Good game!
@FFGUY
These are assembled in Chinese factories...
@aniym Actually, most of the super-high-end Japanese laptops are actually made in Japan.
The Z series has previously been either Made in Japan or Made in the USA (basically if you order the custom version it's technically "Made in the USA" because it's customized stateside).
A truly ultimate ultra-portable, but the price is too high for ordinary people. VIAO Z FTW!!!
Everytime they release any new electronics, the project leader of the device should be required to take it apart piece by piece and explain the hardware on video.
I wish more companies would present their products in this fashion. I would pay money to see Steve Jobs take apart an Iphone and explain to us what little improvements they made over 3 generations.
@blogwhitesitescom
I wonder whether Steve Jobs is still an engineer at heart or just the tech-ignorant CEO we've all had to become accustomed to both in many tech companies and oftentimes at our own jobs.
"Sony target on the fan blades on the development of the next higher density figure of this fan, fan angle optimized specifically for the fans. In this way you can be more effectively remove heat, but no can hear the sound, very quiet"
Hope I no can hear the sound, very quiet, when I buy it...
"You push it! Push it real good!"

It's like porn....
You gotta love it.
@albinomexi
I haver seen porn sir, and that sir is no porn.
I love Google Translate:
"Port should be free to arrange pieces of the need for technical thing really ah!"
@grahamj
I thought i'd be the only one to notice that haha. But anyway, Google translate works pretty well and I think it gets better and better. I was translating back and forth vietnamese and it is pretty close.
@questionexclamation Oh ya it's certainly impressive technology. It just makes funny mistakes sometimes :)
@grahamj : Have you given Microsoft Translator a try? It's been pretty nifty for me. http://www.microsofttranslator.com/
was there no video,i very very like like like :D!! even in japanese or chinese!
I really want to like this - but can't quite get to $2,000 for a 13" lappy. But it sure does look sweet.
Sony!!!!!!! It's always fun to watch a laptop be torn down.
Need translation for comments? Maybe I can help.
