Windows Phone 7 Series demo video reveals new apps, screens
Microsoft may be saving most of its Windows Phone 7 Series news for MIX the week after next (at least that's what we've heard whispers about), but it looks like it's still dishing out a few more details beforehand, as evidenced by a short demonstration Microsoft's Charlie Kindel gave to CNET. Nothing major like a confirmation of HD2 support, but we do get a glimpse of a few apps we haven't seen before (including a flashlight, level, and weather app -- all supposedly "trivial" to build thanks to XNA and Silverlight), and a look at some new screens for various applications we have seen, including a better look at the Xbox Live hub. Head on past the break to check out the video for yourself.

But they still don't have as much apps as iphone or Androids... And they want to dominate the market how?
@cdf74dc9
neither the iphone or the android os started off with as many apps they have now.
@cdf74dc9 5000 different Fart soundboards does no constitute a market. Every dev and his mom has an app in the Apple App Store. Oversaturation will be, if not is already, a problem.
@cdf74dc9
Don't be so short sighted. This platform is more that viable enough to attract a multitude of developers very quickly.
@New Reformation
*than
@cdf74dc9
that is just go ignorant!
The platform is still not out, and their already bringing developers into the MIX (no pun intended)! That's more than one can say about apple or android.
Plus, its MSFT, if any company can get thousands of developers working on their ecosystem, its them! And if by some odd reason noone develops for them, they have the power to develop apps themselves!
Also like someone above me stated, they will have more apps than iphone or android did at start up!
PS. THIS IS MICROSOFT
NUFF SAID
@p0p0
Hold it, don't get so hype about a product you haven't use. Always assume the downfall. This new OS seem to do very few things. Look
@ the market of iPhone and Android and say they didn't succeed without a boat load of crappy Apps which people digs. This Winmo7 seem like a personal device than an entertainment device and they needed to expand more than just "you" stuff like Facebook, RSS, Calandar other stuff that the iPhone and Android already have. Slap a Windows logo and assuming it will pass? No.
@cdf74dc9
Thank you for displaying your lack of thought and intelligence. Did you even attempt to think this comment through or did you lazily just let your bias and emotions take over? It's basically a new platform so of course it won't have many apps to begin with.
@cdf74dc9 its ok there late into the game anyways. they arent they great to start with. im not sure this phone os is too keen on looking atttractive to the user. everyone that wants it wants it because its windows! just an overstatement.
@Jean No, but iPhone's app store started off with more apps than Palm's app store does now! >_>
@p0p0
LOL epic comment. Fart soundboards, hahahahaha.
@jellotime91
Apple start off with no Appstore
Everything I have seen of MS new mobile OS looks pretty sweet. I could care less if they have 120k apps as long as it's a good phone. i doubt it can pull me away from Android, but I am looking forward to checking it out.
@p0p0
are you saying Windows sucks because it has too many Apps? I'm a little confused.
@Wesscoast I'm trying to think of a way to explain this, but I can't. I don't know where I said Windows sucks because it has too many apps.
I keep racking my mind to try to understand whats confusing and how anywhere I mentioned Windows sucks. I'm saying that just because Winmo 7 won't have a massive libraries of apps when it is released means it inferior to Android or iPhone OS. I'd rather have a small library of useful apps then a massive fort know of repeats and copycats (e.g. 5000 fart apps, I really have no idea if there are that many, lol)
@cdf74dc9 I don't know where you get the idea I'm hyped for Winmo 7. I don't have a smartphone, or have really used a smartphone (played with buddies Blackberry, but thats it). So I can't really get hyped about something that I have no interest in. I do like the Zune like GUI it uses. Seems simple and clean to me. :)
I' am however hyped for the iPad and the Courier. I LOVE tablets. The courier seems more useful from the mockups so far, but I would like to use an iPad at some time to see how it handles. Off-topic. XD
@p0p0
"Oversaturation will be, if not is already, a problem."
Scroll up to read your own comment, Einstein.
So having lots and lots and lots of apps is a problem, surely you've heard of Windows and their sizeable "App Store"
@cdf74dc9
If there is one thing Microsoft can do well, it is developer tools and support. The Wimo 7 platform may become saturated like the iPhone with 'senseless apps'; but it is very likely there will be good caliber apps soon after release. Even though this platform is starting from scratch again, it may make better headway on enterprise/business functionality than iPhone/Android have been able to thus far...this tortoise has the potential to catch up with the hares...
@Wesscoast Now see, you went and had to act like a dick. We are not talking about a desktop OS. We are discussing a mobile phone OS. There is a difference between an open market such as Windows, Linux, or OS X. iPhone OS and Android both have app stores that have got too much shit in them. Devs will not make money and users will be frustrated and overwhelmed.
But that is all beside the point. The OP claims that Winmo 7 will not succeed simply because it might not have a large app market at launch. I'm saying that is a stupid fucking reason. It could fail for many other problems and shortcomings. But an small app market does not make any logical connection to the OS's success because as many have pointed out the Android and iPhone app markets were very small at their initial releases and are still hugely popular.
Let it put it simply: THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN AN APP MARKET AND THE INITIAL SUCCESS OF FAILURE OF A MOBILE OS.
Now I look like a dick. Thanks a lot you POS.
But please, kindly remove that stick from your ass and follow the discussion.
@Jean I reckon that at this point if the HD2 was upgradeable they would announce that already. Which could be good news or bad news .. the good news is that the chassis specs must be pretty high for WP 7 series phones. The bad news is that the HD2 is an awesome phone but people may have to hold off on purchasing it to save their money for the holiday season.
I think winphone 7 apps are refreshing. Reactions: http://bit.ly/windows-phone-7-glances
@p0p0 "Devs will not make money and users will be frustrated and overwhelmed. "
That I have to agree with. I got an iPhone last Christmas [first smart phone too]; I've gotta say, It's quite a task to sift through the apps and find something I would actually want to use.
@Wesscoast
You are comparing single point-of-sale app markets for mobile operating systems to the availability of applications from nearly anywhere on a full blown OS. You may as well try to draw conclusions on carrots by eating an apple. The ecosystems are very different.
Anyone who has an iPhone should know firsthand how many low quality apps and app-clones you have to wade through to find anything good on the app store.
@p0p0
Wow, you're still using trying to use that lame old "haha 10000 fart apps lulz" line. Seriously I think it's time for some new material. Now about the number of apps that's just idiotic, what next are you going to complain the iTunes store, or any other store really, has too much music to choose from? I suggest you learn how to use the search and category features, not to mention the new and noteworthy or the top paid and free app sections. You don't even have an iPhone or Android device so I don't get where you're coming up with this "difficulty" to find anything useful, just another troll you are.
@Wesscoast: you're just being ignorant now... he was referring to the saturation on Apple's App Store... there really are too many apps that copy another one and hopefully, Microsoft will do a better job of controlling this on the Marketplace.
@High: I actually owned an iPod Touch and it really is hard to search for a good app on the App Store, both from the iPod and from iTunes.
When did Microsoft hire Scott Van Pelt?
@supremehustle Yellow teeth much?
@Cynical Hippie
is he british?
@supremehustle
More importantly, why did Microsoft hire a guy named "Kindel?"
Oh my God! He slid to unlock. Run, MS, run.
@TheGM Unlike HTC, Microsoft has the funds to defend themselves for years if need be in court. I hope this whole shenanigan doesn't bankrupt HTC.
@Nitesh
I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see Google throw some money behind HTC's defense. Hell, even Microsoft. Afterall HTC is one of the most loyal hardware developers for Windows Mobile.
@Prevacator I wish that were the case. HTC is tiny compared to Apple, type both their names in Wolfram Alpha and look at the comparison.
@TheGM
Apple is scared. They're currently running defense. They should have never been granted patents for 'ideas'. Only devices and code should have patents.
@TheGM It's a flick not a slide :-)
@Nitesh
perhaps in Wolfram you're confusing

with

search responsibly, my friend
@Nitesh i cant even find htc
searched htc and it returned with hungarian telephone and cable
@money
Revenue ▲$3.65 billion USD (2007)
Operating income ▲$957 million USD (2007)
Net income ▲$903 million USD (2007)
HTC is no apple or M$ but when you look at those numbers HTC is no punk.. Apple is prolly 10 to 20 times bigger with its hands in like 100 times more things... Looks like HTC has a damn profitable business model.. The only software they create is mainly Sense UI for Win Mo and Android.. They have ample money to fight this..
@Prevacator Um like really, Google should defend them. They are the makers of the G1 (The device which brought Google's OS to the market) and the Nexus One (Google's baby).
I would smack that guy if I was him for saying Apple instead of Microsoft lol! Pretty funny tho
@angermeans
Lol, I thought that too. "Yeah Silverlight's Apple's, uhh, I mean Microsoft's..."
*Awkwaaard*
@FTheK
ppppaid to say that!!!!
I can't wait until wp7 comes out!!
XBOX LIVE GAMES!!!
BLAM-YEAH!!
@abedinthehouse
For real man, I know we wont be getting many graphics heavy games to begin with. But some games ive had the most fun with - Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers would do wonders on this platform. And Achievements, OMFG.
@BlackedOut

@abedinthehouse
Yayyy MY FIRST "HIGHLY RANKED!"

I'm definitely waiting till the end of the year for this!
Lots of people are....THIS IS HUGE!
@Charlemagne
I'm definitely waiting to see what it can do and the handsets themselves. IPhone OS 4.0 is not far away either.
