Bad news: HTC says the Nexus One doesn't 'go in pockets'
One of the biggest mysteries in the blogosphere right now is probably Crave's Nexus One, which somehow developed a cracked screen while simply charging on the desk (sounds familiar, right?). Not even HTC could unearth the cause from its forensic inspection, but it didn't rule out the possibility of a small crack growing over time due to, for example, "getting knocked around by keys" and repetitive squeezes in tight pockets. That's fine, but saying "people sometimes forget that they don't go in pockets" is surely stretching a bit, no? What happened to the awesomeness in the compression test and bend test that we once witnessed? More importantly, has anyone here had the same baffling screen problem and been charged £180 ($273) for the repair? If so, do share your pain with us -- we've got a shoulder for you.

Well, my laptop fits in my pocket... no damage done there. It's the same type of pocket that my Kindle fits into. I recently got labled as having too many gadgets =D
Yeah I was upset about my Nexus One screen cracking on the first drop. Mostly because I had decided to take off the screen protector and silicone case after seeing the testing video on the googlenexusone youtube channel, it seemed to be durable enough for every day use/abuse, including small drops, but ESPECIALLY putting in your pocket?
I had tried very hard getting the repair/replacement done for free, and bringing up the testing video, but of course wasn't going to happen.
So my $660 (subsidized) phone breaks on the first two foot getting-out-of-the-car-with-phone-in-lap drop, which I had done with my G1 so many times without any serious damage. They're going to make so much money off of glass/screen replacements.

That's why there's a very good phone called... hm... iPhone?!! I always put mine in the same pockets as my keys and there's no problem. The ones buying a nexus one deserve having such a crappy phone just for buying it, and that's because it's a cheap copy of the iPhone.
@lmdadls Some of us can't get an iPhone because we don't have AT&T where we live. So the fact I have to have what you call a crappy phone isn't quite fair, now is it? I'd get an iPhone if I could. Not physically possible unless I move.
@lmdadls And I keep my Nexus One in my pocket with my keys. Absolutely nothing has happened to it. Honestly, fanboys can certainly blow an isolated incident to epic proportions.
@lmdadls I believe the iphone is a dying breed...kinda like the razr...great at first but got stuck being a razr....sorry iphone, ur lack of diverse form factors will be the end of you...poor little fan boy!
ok we all know what really happened to the phone you had your phone and keys in back pocket you sat down and heard a crunch you immediately stand up horrified when u found out what you had done called htc and said you had it in your pocket you pulled it out can it looked like that nice try moving along say htc gfys
it still a little surprising though because of this but that may just be samsung flex tech http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/16/please-hammer-dont-hurt-samsungs-flexible-oled-prototype-vid/
Screen cracking during charging? If this is a manufacturing error, it sounds like a one off. If HTC can't provide a reasonable explanation, they should replace it.
If this starts happening to a significant percentage of Nexus One owners, like one or two percent, without other damage to the screen, then I'd say this is cause for alarm.
Anyhow, if you carry your touchscreen phone in the same pocket as your keys, you are an idiot and any technical support rep would easily be able tell you your device is not eligible for a warrantied repair.
@Smurf This would also entail proof that the phone wasn't mishandled by the user...e.g. video of the screen busting on its own
Not sure if it will help in this situation, but I buy an iShield (http://www.ishieldz.com/) for all my electronics, such as cell phones, my iPod, etc. I can dump my iPod in my purse with keys, camera, pens and a bunch of other junk and it doesn't get scratched. This problem with the HTC sounds more like a pressure point problem, but if the cracked screen can start from a minor scratch, then this might help. This is a real bummer, because I can't get AT&T here so I'm going to have to get an HTC, Eris or Nexus One for Verizon at some point if I want a decent touch-screen smart phone.
Just get a clam shell, I have one for my droid eris, it was the best investment I ever made
I remember when the HTC Magic and HTC Hero first arrived the shops here in Norway late summer last year.
All the devices were wrapped in a plastic folie saying "Do not put the device in your pants pockets", though the sentence might have been put with different words.
I remember reacting on this, as Norwegian law clearly states that a product is to withstand "normal usage".
"Compression test: simulates interaction stress caused by objects in pocket."
At 2:37 in video "Testing" on official Nexus One YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/googlenexusone?blend=1&ob=4
You can't show off your phone's resilience to pocket stresses while simultaneously telling people not to carry their phones in their pockets. Or maybe you can.
its a 500 plus dollar baby... take care of it men.... a nice rubber protector would atleast do the job...
Who here bought an HTC Hero?
When i got mine it had a plastic wrap around the phone, which I now have in my hand, that reads:
"Important: To prevent damage, do not apply excessive pressure to the screen or device case. Please remove the device from your pants pocket before sitting down. For more details, see the Quick Start Guide."
REMOVE DEVICE FROM YOUR PANTS POCKET
Not that I've ever followed this advice and my hero is still going strong.
Weird considering on Google's website 3D tour, the animated hand places the phone in a pocket.
I call SHENANIGANS all my phones have been in pocket with keys..
image that, a portable phone not meant for something as portable as your pocket. C'mon HTC, I know you can do better, don't give Google the shaft just because they're google. I'm sure a lot of chinese people in Hong Kong would've loved a snapdragon pocket phone
I called HTC at 1-888-617-1113 and told them about my phone situation. Issuing an exchange ($529 credit card authorization) and won't be down a phone. Send this one in for repair and will get word if its "warranty" or "non-warranty" repair. Fingers crossed!
@redcard i ended up paying $69 for the screen repair. not bad!
