We aren't trying to lump these two together or anything, but we figured we'd give those of you who opted for Palm's
second set of webOS handsets an opportunity to pool your thoughts in order to make the smartphone landscape an even better place to survey. We personally didn't find too much new to laud on Verizon's Palm-branded twofer compared to the original
Pre and
Pixi, and those of you who were hoping for all new hardware from the company at CES were undoubtedly let down. Still, there's something to be said about a webOS product on America's "largest 3G network," and frankly, we're interested in hearing how you'd change things. Would you have overhauled things more drastically? Expanded the screen size? Bumped the resolution? Enlarged the keys? Go on and tell
Jon exactly what you think in comments below -- who knows, the Pre Plus Plus might just carry your calling card.
oh and a faster processor, Some apps still open way to slowly
Faster boot times..
Android
my wife and i have each had a pre since launch day on sprint, and there are 2 major things that need fixing.
first: the radio. i get better reception (and in more areas) with my old-and-busted mogul. using a newer and "better" phone creates new dead zones? not great.
second: build quality. this phone is junk. both of our have been cracked almost since we've had them. hers is starting to lose big pieces from the side. the functionality and interface are great, but the hardware is a long way from being even ok.
I have a Palm Pre and it is not perfect, but none of the current phone are.
Improvements I would like to see are:
A clam shell design that would allow for a better keyboard.
In any event, a better keyboard.
A larger screen.
A scalable interface, to reflect the needs of people with less than perfect vision.
Make it is less easy to dial someone by accident.
Either the box should include the manual, or it should be available in a more printer friendly form. I resent having to print a 290 page document that is formatted sideways and with very little on each page.
There should be a web based version that is kept up to date.
It is a wonderfully powerful OS with a lot of great features, but we need to learn how to use them. Video training on your website would be great.
Thanks Palm, just keep making it better.
Three things come to mind: METAL on the body GLASS for the screen, and a bigger display.
MicroSD memory slot.
Bigger screen, faster CPU/GPU, on-screen keyboard, better battery life and screen only (iPhone-like) form-factor wuddnt hurt. Plain and simple.
So in theory could you tether the Palm Pre plus to an iPad?? If so, you basically get the best of both worlds. Would be amazing.
It's a solid phone, just needs more apps to become an android killer
Port webOS to the HD2 or HTC Supersonic and I would be sold. I think webOS is the best mobile OS to date but I want a bigger keyboard or larger screen (hopefully both).
@Rothgar damn I even forgot about that, but not just porting it to different fones but actually making it a semi-open source where by manufactures can use it if the meet certain specs. like a snapdragon, a high RAM, capacitive screen and such. that will also help.
1.loose the design, go with the 4.##" by 2.@@" that will help. yep it will be following the trend by who cares if the trend is selling, we all jump in.
2.come up with two models, one with virtual and the other a physical keyboard. cos of #1 the both keyboards will be usable and not cramped.
3.Heck, palm must push their OS aggressively. give the top 500 developers of Iphone OS and android OS a $1000(a million $ in all) each to start developing their most successful app for the WebOS. and use a 80/20 split.
4.Go with a best snapdragon processor one can find and make noise about it. Increase the RAM to the extreme and the storage space and push ads the talk about the importance of the huge RAM and start dissing Apple and co for having less RAM size.
5.Push educational apps, and sell the phone at a discounted price at school books stores as the do with the windows OS for computers.
6.good with the uni-body aluminum casing or a even a higher durable but cheap material than aluminum. cos the retail price of the phone must be low than the average.
Maybe 3.5 screen, voice commands, micro-card slot.
Something like the Dell Mini 5 (at least, externally), operated by WebOS would be very tempting! I personally find iPhone's screen a little too small, Pre's and Pixi's - unreasonably small.
5mp camera, more internal memory or micro sd card slot.
I want the home button back, the pre plus looks blank and boring without it, it just look like a black bar of soap now, from a design stand point removing the button was the dumbest thing to do, the light works for the pixi not the pre.
I would make the keys a little more clicky. Yeah. But I want one.
amoled display
rugged yet sleek and sexy casing
can play 720p video
1 gig ram
24gb hdd
5mp camera with auto focus
record hi rez video
speech recognition api that can be used by any app
magnetometer
forward facing camera for mobile vid conferencing
802.11N
-Larger keypad with less sensitivity on the keys.
-A better screen lock/unlock system (either none or a pin...annoying)
-More photo taking options (B&W, sepia, etc.)
-Beefier battery
-MORE APPS!!!!
Having had 3 Palm Pre phones over the course of six months. Sprint finally relented and allowed me to get a different phone at the 2-year upgrade price. I can say in all honesty that the Pre is a pretty bad phone and an even worse smartphone, the things I would change are:
1) Fix the lag in the built-in apps. The phone app will lag even with no other apps open causing mis-dials and accidental disconnects. Even worse if the messaging app is open.
2) Fix the 5 minute boot time so when the darn thing does crash (and yes, it does crash, a lot), it won't take all day to fix.
3) Get a decent threaded GMail app.
4) Make the keyboard slide out landscape instead of portrait so the keys can be wider than 3mm.
5) Get some decent apps and games! Even most of the paid apps suck.
Have it not require a data plan. Sure I probably would sign up for the data plan anyways if I were to get the phone, but I should still have the option not to get it.
1. Make physical keyboard better than or as good as Blackberry Bold (9000 is the best keyboard on a small device imo).
2. Improve build quality
3. Starting from scratch is good, but!!!! how long did it take you to implement copy/paste function? There's still no undo function! Make it so that we can use palm's external keyboard or other regular size external keyboard. Make it so that EVERYTHING(sms, call logs....it's almost impossible to go overboard, just ask Blackberry users) can be backed up to a personal computer. Please, don't think it takes away from wireless back up. On the contrary it'd make a HUGE positive addition
4. Maybe it's for a next generation/model phone, but I think horizontal keyboard with flip (clam) form factor is the way to go. Of course there should be a second screen to show the imperative info, but at least the main screen will be protected. Horizontal keyboard should make it a much more game-friendly phone.
5. Make it thin.
6. Make it indestructible. Please don't tell me I want too much. Screen is the most vulnerable spot, and in clam form factor it's naturally protected. I had a metal case flip phone (samsung m500) that outlived any other phones I ever used.(it never actually died, I just "upgraded" to palm pre)
7.Last but not the least. Multitasking is amazing. Visual effects are always welcome. But things such as calendar, clock, contacts - the most important productivity operations should take only fraction of a second. I'm not ok with the calendar's loading or operational speed if it's the same as the one of Need for Speed.
8. Make basics work flawlessly and extremely reliable, then you'll get blackberry and iphone converts
@bosendor
I forgot to mention the speaker... In this day and age, even Radioshack should be able to help you with the sound, Palm.
I think a larger pixi form factor with the same size screen as the Iphone or larger. larger keyboard like the Blackberry keyboard. It needs MICRO SD on early ads it said there was one. More RAM and overall storage up to 32Gigs if you are not adding Micro SD. Fix Browser can't see all Iphone sites (porn) and it is a hassle. Make it a little heavier so all these people that complain that it feels plastic and cheap shut up also no high Gloss plastic leather or metal matte finish. Ridge around bezzel to protect the screen. I love Web OS the phone needs longer life Battery just like every other Phone except Blackberry. Also get that stock price back up to $18 I am getting killed in the market and I need a win. Email needs work for gmail and where is Google development don't they want to be on everything?
The WebOS is kind of neat. However it needs to be FASTER
Windows Phone 7 or whatever they call it will have the pre for breakfast.
I have been using a Zune HD since the day it was released. The UI is stellar IMHO.
bigger battery a bit wider, bigger keys, bigger screen, bigger all around, 1ghz processor (i dontcare if its snapdragon or not justneeds to be faster) stronger build quality
bigger, thiner, a real app market, and better touch screen
i love the phone! especially da size but there are some things i would like to see....i would like to c Skype come to the pre plus(all they would have to do is put a small camera on the front of the phone or even replace the mirror in the back with a LCD screen so that they woun't have to add another camera). i also want them to fix the double and triple clicking issue on the keybord. a glss screen would be NICE because then u won't have to worry about scratchs all the time and buying screen protectors for it. and i would like to see palm improve the way the phone lines up when it is closed(because the top half of the phone does not line up straight with the bottom have it's like the top is pulling to the left(@ least on my phone)). an OLED screen would help to save battery also....tell me what yall think.
Make it a lot more solid. The current case feels like a toy.
Make it a world phone.
Those two changes and I'd dump my Blackberry Storm for a Pre in an instant.
I would make the phone sturdier. I love it when there is aluminum as part of the case, like with the original iPhone and with the iPhone 4G. and the edges around the keyboard are too sharp. The pre looks good but doesn't hold up to real use
I'd change the calendar app:
Make smaller print possible so you can see a whole day at a glance.
Make it possible with a keystroke or a gesture to move forward a week, getting around the calendar is way to slow compared to Centro. Hard to keep up in meetings, with the dates/times I have available.
I miss datebk6.
I'd change the task app so that I could work with tasks on google, sync them to something
