First iPad ad premieres during the Oscars
Apple's doing the Oscars up right tonight -- not only was Steve Jobs making friends on the red carpet, but the company ran the first iPad ad just now during the broadcast. It's pretty much what you'd expect out of an Apple ad, but, you know, more magical. Get ready for a blitz of these as we lead up to April 3. Video after the break.

@Mallaca51 "NO USB PORT AND NO DIVX/XVID/AVI AND NO FLASH MAKE HOMER SOMETHING SOMETHING."
Go crazy?
@screamster
And yet the millions of people who buy one will be in direct opposition to your team. Maybe your team should open their eyes and see where the wind is blowing, hmm?
@Jack We do. It's called Android and it's a breath of fresh air. Unlike the limiting, stale smell of a rotting Apple.
@screamster
Oh yes, Android is just taking the world over, isn't it? So much for not being biased against Apple, huh? Your "breath of fresh air" seems pretty stagnant to me. Let me know when there's a decent unified infrastructure that doesn't suck quite so badly.
@screamster and the whole world just shed a collective tear because you and your dev team have sworn off the iPad.
But of course it will NEVER really matter how good or bad an Apple product is...this commercial alone will make the iPad a hit because Apple sells. It's 'niche' folks...no use arguing about anything, because 'niche' always wins.
@LeftBower08
Its not niche when everyone has one, it makes you a sheep.
@Mallaca51
Yup.
@Mallaca51
Kind of like Windows users, the biggest collection of sheep on the planet.
@LeftBower08 Most geeks don't understand marketing. If you are developing anything, narrow your focus on your core customers. Design a product for them, and you have succeeded.
If you design a product for people who are not your customers, you have failed.
You cannot design one product for all demographics and all users.
If you design a product for pro-users, expert computer nerds, and try to sell it to everyone else, you'll fail. It may come as a big shock to most pro-users and expert computer nerds that they're a very narrow, small group of people... with no perspective at all.
@MrOverThere "If you design a product for people who are not your customers, you have failed."
You should call up Nintendo. They need to know that, if this is true, they're financially doomed.
@MrOverThere Apple aims at a 95% universal accessibility...what makes technology 'state of the art' isn't it's processing power, it's its user interface...it's accessibility. Apple doesn't target a specific group, but rather as many groups as possible (I agree, you can't design for everyone). "Niche" means it's state of the art...or at least appears to be state of the art based on its popularity.
Wait... is that an actual ship-date they're advertising?! You mean, they actually made this thing and are getting it in consumers hands?
Is the guy in the commercial sitting down on the couch casually using this thing? Is Apple implying they know how people will use this thing?
I still can't get over the fact they actually are shipping this thing.
They should take some cues from the creative genius at Microsoft and just release videos of pretend imagination devices like the Courier. That way you avoid that entire manufacturing/delivering nuisance.
Man, this looks so uncomfortable to use. :S
I think Hitler sums it up nicely...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQnT0zp8Ya4
@screamster
Yeah, Godwin's Law. The first refuge for the ignorant.
@screamster I think the Hitler parody of Hitler parodies sums up Hitler parodies nicely.
Here you go. Top things missing from the iPad from multiple sources:
http://gizmodo.com/5458382/8-things-that-suck-about-the-ipad
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/01/ten-things-missing-from-the-ipad/
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/01/28/wired.missing.from.ipad/index.html
@screamster Are you able to also provide links to lists about things that suck and were missing about the original iPod and iPhone? I'd love to see those lists again. They littered the internet shortly after they were announced. Those things that were missing didn't seem to affect their success.
Remember, the iPad is on version one and is actually shipping. By this time next year, version two will be out and those "things that suck and are missing" will no longer be important.
Look, Apple is depending on its core users to adapt early to this thing. They're sticking their neck out and exploring a different area. As they do this, Microsoft and Google are watching very, very closely to see what comes of it. Will it succeed? Will it fail? Someone has to try.
@MrOverThere So because they rushed the thing out the door half-ass'd, their cult following has to take what they can get? Until next release?
Good point you brought up here... You are basically implying that people should be happy with whatever they get. Spoken like a true Apple fanboy.
Let Steve Jobs lead you all like sheep to the slaughter. It's fun to watch. :D
@screamster
What kind of point are you trying to make here? You understand that the iPad is going to sell in the millions, right? So obviously the things that are "missing" aren't really that important, are they?
Android is missing a lot of things too, like any sort of cohesive infrastructure, good multitouch, good usability, I mean the list kind of just keeps on going. I guess that conclusively means Android is a massive failure.
Isn't your brand of logic fun?
@Jack
"What kind of point are you trying to make here? You understand that the iPad is going to sell in the millions, right? So obviously the things that are "missing" aren't really that important, are they?" - At least you are admitting there are lots of flaws to the iPad. This is the first step to recovery.
"Android is missing a lot of things too, like any sort of cohesive infrastructure, good multitouch, good usability, I mean the list kind of just keeps on going. I guess that conclusively means Android is a massive failure." - Good usability? lol. Keeps going? Hey dude, Android doesn't limit users like Apple does. Stop the mirror imaging. It's doesn't work.
I put money down that Steve Jobs doesn't think Android is a failure. He finds them to be a threat.
Isn't your brand of logic fun? - Absolutely. Unlike yours which is quite tedious and annoying.
@screamster sorry but no one...and i mean no one that ever owned an android device pre 2.0 can make claims of customers blindly accepting half baked products......hi pot, i'm kettle....yes i'm black.
@screamster
Lots of flaws? No. If it had lots of flaws, Apple wouldn't be selling it. You are the one who used the word "missing", which is why I put it in quotation marks. English much? I have yet to hear your explanation of how the iPhone is so successful if it's missing all that great stuff. Any day you want to explain that, that would be great.
"Android doesn't limit users" - I'm sorry which fantasy universe are you living in? Or were you not aware of the whole multitouch issue? Oh right, you don't think Android has any flaws. That's because you're an Android fanboy. Ironic, don't you think?
And you didn't address your "special" brand of logic - Android is a massive failure right now, because it's missing all kind of good features. Right? That's the logic you're using. I know mine is tedious and boring, but facts and truth usually are.
Here you go. For all of you that want to support Apple and Steve Jobs:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/we-hate-steve-jobs
@screamster
Yes, online petitions are a good way to judge... well, anything.
Are you really this dumb? Like, in real life?
I wish they'd drop this and finish making the device they promised before!
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/apple_introduces_revolutionary
@syph007
So... you're saying you don't know the difference between Apple and The Onion?
Time to clear the air here...
I want you all to know, I do not support Android as the only option on the board. I want to make this perfectly clear.
One thing I want you all the know is, you DO NOT have to follow Apple as your only choice. Get the facts. Don't just buy this piece of crap just because you can, or it's the new toy on the market, or Steve Jobs says it's "Magical" and told you to.
There are many options coming out in the next few months. Options that iPad DOES NOT have.
The NEWER non-Apple tablets will have:
1) Multitasking - Kind of says it all.
2) Flash - 30-40% of websites use Flash.
3) Front Video Camera - Skype is making it's way to prime time. Video conference your friends!
4) HDMI port - OMG. How could you launch a product without this?
Whether it be linux, windows 7, or android. Look into a better tablet before spending your money on "magical" hype. Don't you owe it to yourself to do so? $500 could get you so much more for your money. Shop before you buy.
Thank you for reading.
@screamster
40% of websites use flash? Tell me the sites you regularly visit that you couldn't on an Ipad.
Wait. Let me just have a look at the last 10 sites I've browsed.......1 uses Flash... Youtube. There's an app for that.
@Jack lmao. You honestly have no idea what Flash does do you...
Ever heard of actionscript? Flash can make interactive games, menus, videos, interactive kiosks , and multitude of other useful items.
By calling me stupid, moron, etc. it shows how narrow minded you really are. I have reported your post.
@screamster
Anything made in flash can be made into an app. It's that simple. And wow, interactive menus? You mean the kind you can make in HTML5 without any kind or proprietary plugin required at all?
And you do this for a living? You must be really, really bad at it.
I will stop calling you stupid when you prove that you have stopped BEING stupid. Say things that actually have even the slightest hint of intelligence, and it won't be a problem any more.
All your "iPad sucks don't get one" rants only go to show that you really, really don't get why the iPad is going to be so popular, and for that matter why the iPhone is so popular. You can dislike it all you want, but keep your bad advice to yourself.
And keep comparing Apple to the Nazis. That's a good way of showing how not stupid you are.
@pukerocket Hulu, MLB.com, XM Radio Online, playlist.com, ESPN, SyFy.com, Facebook, Disney.com, linerider.com, movie sites, gaming sites, porn sites, etc. etc. etc.
@Jack No. Not everything can be made into Flash. It's NOT that simple. Who is going to save you? Quicktime? NOW you want to talk about buggy... My old company which streamed video went right over to Flash when we got the funding. Quicktime let us down, horribly.
HTML5 can't even get an internet standard together. It will not be ready for primetime till 2014 or so.
Here's your browser compatibility chart for HTML5:
http://www.quirksmode.org/dom/html5.html
So, why are you buying iPad again?
@screamster
Who said I was buying an iPad? And yes, it is that simple. Oh wait, nobody is going to bother turning their flash ads into HTML5 so I guess that's a huge downside. No more annoying flash ads, which is what 90% of flash is being used for. What a terrible tragedy.
Why did you bring Quicktime into this? It has nothing to do with HTML or flash. At all. Do you really just not understand this technology or something? But for the record Quicktime works fine for me. Your story sounds like user error.
HTML5 does actually have it together, the spec is in "last call" format as of now. And seriously, flash is a buggy memory and processor hog contained in a proprietary browser plugin. HTML5 is the next HTML standard spec, they're hardly comparable. HTML5 will replace the current HTML we have now, isn't that obvious? Are your eyes just closed to what's going on around you?
Doesn't that fact that YouTube already has an HTML5 site up and running to the public give you some sort of indication that it's already ready? Oh and as far as browser compatibility - LOL? It works 100% on Safari, in all forms, including Safari on the iPhone and iPad. In fact Safari and its mobile version passed the ACID3 test at 100% compatibility.
But let me guess, you didn't know that either. What a surprise.
As to why somebody would buy an iPad - are you just trying to prove me right or something? When I said you didn't get why people are going to buy it, I wasn't just shooting in the dark. You are really just completely clueless about this.
When you figure out why the iPhone is so popular, you will know why the iPad will be popular. Good luck with that.
@Jack "All your "iPad sucks don't get one" rants only go to show that you really, really don't get why the iPad is going to be so popular"
Would you like to tell us why the iPad is going to be so popular? Or is it sufficient to follow the old formula: "You really think that [state opposing opinion]? That's totally wrong. You're dumb."
@screamster dude, you really need to get a life. people will make their minds up on their own, and literally NOTHING you say will sway anyone one way or the other.
if you're going to post anymore, could you give us some info on your level of experience with the iphoneOS....I suspect its absolutely none....and i can't think of anything more ignorant that passing judgement on an entire platform based on just a spec sheet....great, i can't get my nytimes flash content from the web...damn, i'll just have to have their app that includes all the same content...except i'll get to it quicker than i could if i just kept the site bookmarked in my browser...big deal....that example will be consistent across an absolutely huge collection of websites
and i'm going to venture a guess that you're intelligent enough to know that a web experience is not purely limited to the confines of a browser...all those apps that you seem to dismiss are very much part of that experience.....and in that regard, there is no other platform where devs have delivered a better experience than on the iphone...it will only get better with a faster device using a larger screen.
@Jack
STFU.
@Apple Google Microsoft
NO U.
@scrumtrelescent7
No, see there's thing this called an iPhone. You probably haven't heard of it. The iPad runs on the same OS and infrastructure as the iPhone, just with a larger screen and more capability, i.e. iWork, ebooks, etc.
As the Apple haters are so quick to point out, the iPhone doesn't have every hardware feature in the entire universe. They're very clever for noticing that and harping about it for years. But that didn't stop the iPhone from becoming the single most popular smartphone in the world, did it?
Why is that, do you think? If, as all the Apple haters love to point out, the iPhone is really nothing special, then how did it get to be so popular? Care to take a guess? Anybody?
When you figure that out, you will understand why the iPad will be popular. And in fact already is popular despite not actually being available yet.
@screamster
You actually think those sites don't have iPhone sites? Wow. Facebook doesn't work on the iPhone? Wow.
@Jack You have totally solidified the fact that you are a Apple fanboy that has serious issues. iPhone is becoming obsolete. Android is the new beast on the street.
Did you think Apple was going to remain on top forever? That is just naive. Will iPad do well? Maybe it will be "magical"! But I will do my best with everyone I run across to educate them in what the product lacks.
Oh yeah, and right now, users still use IE 6/7. Good luck with HTML5. Most browsers cant even handle most of the tags yet.
Enjoy your iPad Jack, I really, really hope you enjoy it. Seriously. Cause if Anrdoid trumps Apple, this could be the last iTampon you ever get.
Always know this, I will ALWAYS point out Apple's flaws. Cause their are many there. The Apple forum support site is FULL of them.
@screamster
It's there, not their.
Support forum full of problems? Who'd've thunk that! Amazing revelation, kid.
The Iphone isn't becoming obsolete.
"Beast on the street" - Wow. You wrote that? Are you 12?
Keep educating, we sure need more people on the internet who don't know they're there's from there theirs
@Atkins Steve Jobs and Apple is the suck!
the fucking comment system has been taken over by 10 year olds. fucking ridiculous.
@vqro
10 year olds who post comments like that? ↑
@Apple Google Microsoft
Dude.... I'm a MS user and you are spot on. Apple is great at ignoring these compatibility issues and pandering to everyone and their mother until their product becomes so diluted that we're delivering windows 7 in the version of windows 97.
Apples products speak for themselves...
iPod --- 75% market share and most popular music player in the world
iTunes --- 10 BILLION songs sold
iPhone --- Most Popular Smart phone in the world
iTouch --- An iPod and gaming device with access to 140,000 apps that will run on it.
app Store --- Thousands of developers for gaming platforms and Billions of downloads in just over 1-1/2 years
iPad --- aka The Kindle Killer and they are not even for sale yet.
ebook Store --- The electronic bookstore version of iTunes, which will surpass Amazon with electronic publishing.
Yes, I'm a Microsoft fan. But it's going to take more than a Phone to revive this company. The only reason why microsoft is building a phone is because BALLMER has his head up his VSS. Not recognizing that Apple was looking to control content and that Google is building software integrated apps that need no installing are just a few reasons why MS should be freaking out.
Look at the whole picture here. It's called ease of integration = value. Apple is extremely profitable because they understand what is valuable. We should actually be thanking Apple for this phone, Microsoft would have never invented it.
Microsoft, when are you going to get a leader?
LISTEN TO THIS... (idiot) 10.10.09
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer said in an interview late Thursday that Apple is unlikely to ever control the smartphone market the way it does portable media players. The executive argued that the sheer scale of the phone market, which could amount to almost 1.3 billion devices this year, made it impossible for any one hardware company to take control. Apple's lead in media players was possible only because it participated in a niche, he added, and the company has usually never had more than a niche position in larger markets.
"I’ll call anything that’s under about 50 million a year niche," Ballmer told TechCrunch. "And I’ll call anything that’s north of 300 million a year non-niche. PCs are not niche devices... Phones are not niche. The categories where, I think, a single player can control a large percentage of the volume are the smaller categories. What does Apple sell every year of iPods: 30 million, order of magnitude, something like that... But when you get these categories that are 300 million, 500 million, a billion, a billion-five a year, the truth of the matter is you’re gonna want multiple points of manufacture, with a lot of innovation around it whether it's [the] supply chain, for geographic diversity... when 1.3 billion phones a year are all smart, the software that’s gonna be most popular in those phones is gonna be software that’s sold by somebody who don’t make their own phone."
1. "There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance." Quoted C-Net
What does he do? Builds a phone. Ballmer is a Moron.

Fire this guy...
I dont get the point of slate pc's... or... whatever the dam ipad is :-x... I mean if you want the functionality of a pc on the go, you should get something that you could easily take on the go... along the lines of a smartphone(webos, winmo, android), or an internet tablet...
and than we have laptops and desktops which have all of that functionality but for the most part stay stationary... they are more like a hub if you will...
where do slate pc's fit, in this divide... I would understand there existence if they were presenting a new form factor for laptops... but it seems as if slate pc's have been introduced to us as a whole nother device alongside the smartphone, laptop, and desktops of the world... wtf??? could someone please explain to me the significance of a device that's too small to replace a laptop and too big to replace a smartphone???
Obviously, as we all know, every super magical and new item on the market has it's kinks and quarks. Take for instance the very first iPhone. It sucked. However, after a few months of patches and new generations, it was fixed. The point i'm trying to make is that before you go out and buy the iPad right when it hits the stores, wait for all of the updates to come in and patches to be done so that your not stuck with a first generation iPhone when all your friends have the new shiny 3g one.
Think about it.
@ Denstao607 I agree, we shall see what patches will be available after the first generation of iPads is released. More about its capabilities can be found here: http://www.thehdstandard.com/general-discussion/no-flash-support-on-apples-tablet/
