Palm Elan to be the next webOS smartphone, heading to AT&T?
Here's a little spicy rumor for you Palm fans on this tranquil Sunday: according to TopTongueBarry who claims to work for AT&T, his company has just finished certification tests with GSM flavors of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus ahead of a possible April 26th launch -- a date not far from what we've heard earlier. However, the bigger news from Barry is that the big A will soon be testing a third mysterious webOS device by the name of Palm Elan, which may greet us mere mortals on May 10th (but possibly in Europe first). Another forum member Shadow-360 also dug up some cached pages that claimed to have accessories for the non-existent device, as pictured above. Of course, this could be just a crude joke for a keyboard-less Palm device that many of us seem to desire -- as reminded by the good folks at PreCentral, Elan is also the name of the company that sued Apple over multitouch patents last April. So, any thoughts on this leak? Are we all ready for a new webOS phone?

Update: Turns out the Elan may just be the Pixi. Or it could be your wildest dreams about to come true.

its not over till its over
go palm
@windzilla Now they just need to show some ads with the phones doing stuff....
@windzilla Is it just me, or is AT&T suddenly dominating?
Glad I came over to the dark side.
@windzilla Palm needs new hardware. However, they need money to be able to make it.
@AlexSanchez
There is no lightside when it comes to wireless network carriers.
@I was swhite237: They have. There are Verizon ads for them all over the place. People are so hung up on those original Sprint ads.
@AlexSanchez
Suddenly dominating? Please. They've been dominating since they got the Iphone. It just didn't suit you to notice
@pukerocket The fuck does iPhone have anything to do with AT&T dominating?
I have a 3GS, and I can honestly say, screw the iPhone.
@windzilla Come on Palm! Wow us! You can do it, we're all rooting for you.
@I was swhite237 I lost my passwo Minus the creepy chick. If this is anything like the Pre, I'm dumping my iPhone on eBay and getting.
@AlexSanchez Didn't know a handset improves a mobile carriers network. AT&T can add all the new glamorous handsets they want, nothing matters until the fix the shit those phones run on (aka, their network).
@AlexSanchez
AT&T has 2x the smartphone users than verizon, but fewer overall subscribers. I believe AT&T's iPhone subcriber base is close to verizon's total smartphone user base. Also, the quarterly results show that AT&T total new consumer acquisition is made up almost entirely of iPhone users.
While you may hate your iPhone 3gs. It doesn't change the fact that the iPhone is a big reason for their success.
Argue the facts, not your stupid emotions.
@AlexSanchez I agree with you; however look at how many iPhones there are. They're all on AT&T. And maybe they have a family member who doesn't need a smartphone, but they still end up on AT&T because it's simpler to have one bill.
@AlexSanchez
You know what Alex, you can't choose your family, it might be hard to get rid of your friends, you may stick with a job for the money.
But...
If you dislike your phone it takes all of about 1 to 15 minutes to change it. If it's a work unit, refuse to use it.
@jaffreywali 2X as many smartphones? I am an ATT subscriber and I can tell you first hand it doesn't matter how many smartphones you have if you don't have choice. All AT&T has had up until this week is the iPhone, a handful of WinMo phones, and 2 mid/low end Nokia smartphones. That's right,absolutely 0 Android and 0 WebOS phones, which to me equals 0 choice.
@Cy Starkman: And out come the iPhone trolls. As soon as you mention it, you are guaranteed that three will show up, all beating the same nonsensical "the iPhone is a better phone because more people use it" line.
@jaffreywali Well, here's my update after doing research Verizon has 17 smartphones, and ATT has 16 if you count all the iPhone models as 1... So ATT does not nearly come close to having 2x as many phones as verizon, and ATT still has a much crappier selection lacking WebOS, and as of yesterday having probably the crappiest Android device of any carrier.

a disgruntled ATT subbscriber that wants more choice in his smartphone selection
@Luxury Guy
lrn2comprehension
"AT&T has 2x the smartphone users"
Whether or not that's true, I'm clueless.
@Luxury Guy
2x as many smartphones sold. Not models available. iPhones are selling at over 4x the rate of Droid. Actually most months it's 8x and well over 10x the Nexus one.
Palm will do it again.
I'll be waiting.
@AlexSanchez
I'm def happy to be with Att, large coverage, and all options iPhone, webos, android, blackberry, and of course sim cards ^_^.
@David V You are absolutely right about that.
@Techno1q I am def rooting em on of this lives up to my hype (just a better screen pre) I will be replacing my 3Gs
@Luxury Guy Good observation but they are Also a huge RIM dealer and have been forever. That is a bugger market than android and palm OS combined
@Luxury Guy Bigger not bugger lol
@zullnero Better than the "android is better cause it's open" line that the android army uses
@windzilla
iPhone 3GS owner here...it's still the best phone out there.
However I'm very excited to see what Palm brings to the table....
@TheRogueFFAngel
I didn't even know AT&T gets phones from manufacturers anymore since the iPhone. Hmm... so AT&T subscribers, you DO have choices that make regular people look less like posers... interesting...
@Luxury Guy Wait now. They have the Backflip!
@barkerja Their network is horrible. Thats the only service I havent been on because thats the only one in my area that's just inexcusably horrible. I've never had a dropped call on VZ or Sprint--who i am back with after the Pre's launch. I hope this new Palm device is a landscape slider (I dont do virtual keyboards) with great specs: 3G/4G device, 5+ mem back cam, 2-3 meg frontal cam (video calls/chat), 1+GHz Snapdragon, 0.5-1GB RAM, and with a great hardware build.. I like the build on the Touch Pro 2.
I'm already in love with webOS. Yeaa, it's not perfect (what OS is?!) but its been only 9 months and webOS has evolved grrrreatly. Since folk like to always compare it to the iPhone, I'll say it launched as an iPhone OS 1.5, but now its a OS 3.1 alpha... in 9 months. thats about 2 years in Apple-speak, and no new hardware was needed.
I also have hopes for a smartbook/slate/tablet hybrid like the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, and bits from the Lenovo smartbook (http://hellosmartbook.com). With webOS and built/in webcam and mic (3G/4G if possible, but im getting an Overdrive anyway), I'm sold!!! If you haven't experienced webOS, DO SO!..on a VZ 'Plus' device though, the extra RAM and storage are a no-brainer.
@AlexSanchez Same here buddy.
it get's so old so quick.
Oh please let this be true...and not a piece of shit.
@JustinB
"Soft" keyboard? I'll stick to my Pre's lovely physical keyboard, thank you very much. :-)
Go palm. B-)
@RottingOrange I'll take both on one device, like the Droid.
@JustinB I second your "Please let this not be a piece of shit"
With a:
Please Please Please Please not let this be a piece of shit...
C'mon palm! You're fully capable of creating something AWESOME, hardware better than the iPhone, and an OS thats already got bucket loads of polish.
I'm an iPhone owner, but I really Want to see palm create something mind blowing.
@Complex Pants I have both (virtual and hardware keyboards) on my Pre, thanks.
@RottingOrange If palm stays true to there word (after Rubinstein took over this could have changed even though he was the one who said it) they said that Palm phones will always have portrait keyboards to remain true to the palm heritage
I'm certainly excited about the prospect of a new Palm phone.
Fix the email app, put this phone on sprint as well (69.99 unlimited everything, yes please) and I might consider switching from my iPhone.
@RAGE
What's wrong with the email app? I don't see any problems with it for 98% of what I do, and that other 2% being sending schedule invitations with an Exchange account.
My bigger problems are non-account specific notifications for IM, and the browser lagging behind the rest of the stock apps in polish.
I hope I hope it's not fake. Palm needs a new high-ender to reignite some excitement. Come on, convince me to get a shiny new Palm phone when my contract's up instead of another iPhone that looks exactly like the one I already have and is only marginally improved!
@Cameron
Hopefully it has a really nice processor and a large screen. A sliding keyboard with a dedicated number row would be good too.
@Cameron And it needs to be on as many carriers as possible.
Get it out on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, TMobile! And release it world-wide within a month of a state-side release.
Come one Palm, this may be your last chance.
@Cameron
How about, http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9009/c40v3.jpg ?
@senormatt
That phone would be amazing.
I wonder what form factor this one is going to be. Hopefully it will be a horizontal slider like the Droid or G1.
@Dafrety
That would be awesome, I would buy it without a contract.
webOS is awesome, but the Pre and Pixi keyboards didn't appeal to me. If the Elan was like the Droid or just a touchscreen phone, then I would keep the Droid in my right pocket and the Elan in my left. 8)
@Maj
Or something more like the Moment slider mechanism and AMOLED screen (at a higher res) with Palm styling, keyboard style, and WebOS. And arrow keys! And Snapdragon would be nice.
@Trevize it's going to be a revamped version of omap3. I believe it's going to be a omap36** at least 720 mhz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_OMAP
@jstunna21
I think palm would go with the new OMAP4 more than anything. Probably the OMAP4430.
a 3.7/3.5" screen with a vertical (portrait) slider would be very nice :)
