@Javindo It won't because it doesn't have a fruit on it. However that is fine by me. I don't need a device to be trendy. I need a device to do what I want it to do. Which is exactly what the slate does. If I was ever given an iPad I would drop kick the thing into traffic assuring that no one would EVER use the damn thing. Apple is a cancer on the tech industry that should be destroyed one way or another.
They can only in absence of competition that is willing to make as much marketing noise.
Apple hasn't had that so soon after they release a product as they have here with HP and the viral appearances of the Courier. And on top of that the iPad hasnt really differentiated itself to the point where other tablet PCs and the like have no sun to stand in.
@TekWarrior and the slate just looks like windows 7 with a touch screen. Have fun with that! if MS would get off there asses and produce a real touch screen UI for this, then I would be game. But the way it is now I would rather use an iPad even with its limitations.
What part of the iPad is NOT a notebook do you not understand?
Comparing the iPad, or this HP device, to laptops is missing the point.
The iPad will outsell this thing 100 to 1. You watch. Don't believe me. Just check the first week each of them is released, and then get back to me. I'll be watching.
(And the comment about the HP phones being more functional than iPhones is hilarious. I guess that's why their numbers have chrashed through the floor?)
"The iPad will outsell this thing 100 to 1. You watch. Don't believe me. Just check the first week each of them is released, and then get back to me. I'll be watching."
Did I just kick you in your nuts and spit on your mom? Why dont you double-dog dare me to disagree with you while you are at it.
If HP makes a good investment in ads, and marketing, they will do extremely well.
Sorry if that doesn't fit into you "OMG Apple Is The Shitz!!!!" attitude.
"How can you say ipad is useless. When you use that word, it means ipad cannot do ANYTHING.."
Actually to say something is 'useless' doesn't mean it can't do anything, it means it is not used for anything. So if someone buys an iPad, and finds it is not the orgasmotron of mobile computing that some people think it will be, and eventually relegates it to a drawer or corner of their desk with a bunch of other impulse items and gadgets they DON'T USE, it will truly be USELESS.
But I rather suspect that fate awaits some HP Slates as well...only time will tell
iPad will destroy the HP Slate when it comes to sales, despite being a far better device. That doesn't mean that HP won't make money on it though, particularly if they have an aggressive marketing campaign (for some reason, other companies leave the marketing playing field to Apple all alone). And who knows, maybe the HP Slate will take on the air of "coolness", since it'll be rarer than the iPad. Owners of the iPad will look like a bunch of followers, by comparison. That's how Macs became "cooler" than PCs, in the first place.
@Javindo iPad is another AppleTV -- totally useless to most people. I think it will be a flop. Maybe version 2.0 will catch on, but after the initial hype wears off after launch the only people using an iPad will be the hardcore Apple fanboys. I don't think even Apple's marketing offensive can save a product as bad as iPad.
'CAN' being the operative word. I personally would read 'without use' as 'not being used', not lacking the POTENTIAL for use.
So I stand by what I said, *I* would consider it useless IF it is NOT being used. Though I'll grant, your interpretation of the term/phrase is a valid one...just not one I personally would...uh, 'use' :P
You may hope, but it won't outsell the iPad. The HP Slate just a keyboard-less computer with no downloadable content worth mentioning. All hardware and nothing else.
It's as been said. Windows users don't want slates and Apple users will buy anything Apple offers. Apple users will be willing to spend the money on a tablet and Windows users won't. The HP Slate is destined to fail because so many Windows users think the netbook form factor is better. Windows user's narrow-minded attitude will cause the HP Slate to fail.
Thank you for clearing that up. I just do not know wh people cannot grasp the truth that windows has NO downloadable content for it. Windows Fails with no apps store
The problem is, I see the HP Slate as being the useless device whereas I can absolute see the point of the iPad. What differentiates the HP Slate from any other PC? Why would I want to buy this rather than a generic notebook? The fundamental problem that the HP Slate has is that it is just another Tablet PC that sucks just like Tablet PCs always have. The iPad, on the other hand, shows that Apple understands why Tablet PCs have failed and that the best option is a platform that is designed for touch. You can't just slap a touch interface on top of existing desktop applications and expect a good experience.
Microsoft needs to get the Courier to market before it will see any success in the tablet arena.
@bazookafx3 Not quite. Arguably, Apple has up until now excelled in their chosen markets. The best MP3 player, best all-in-one, best smartphone. They just die when they try shipping the same style of products with vastly inferior specs to a competitive market (PPC, Apple TV, Macbook Air). As mentioned above, the HP Slate blows their offering out the water because for one thing, you don't even need to own another computer.
@Javindo Can the iTampon download movies via torrents while having Live Messenger and Skype open at the same time, WHILE browsing the web in two windows?
@John Doe "Apple is a cancer on the tech industry that should be destroyed one way or another."
wow. hateful. and dead wrong.
technology has made incredible advancements and is a huge part of our lives precisely because there are a variety of different types of tech companies out there. some do pure research and advance the ball in ways we don't always see. some are first to market. some evolve/perfect good ideas and make them great. some make inelegant but useable software for the masses (an ultimately democratic and desirable thing). some are open source. some are closed ecosystems. some are all about business/utility. some are advancing esoteric ideas about how humans interact with machines. etcetera.
in the end, it's all good. there's no perfect way. everyone is doing their best, learning from each other, and trying to go forward.
maybe you've actually seen cancer in your life, and maybe you haven't. i can't know you're experience. but apple is not cancer. they're just a tech company with some smart, creative people who get a lot of stuff right and some stuff wrong. same with microsoft, google, adobe, etc. most of them are pretty alright. and in the end, we all wind up with better stuff.
really, the only thing that seems cancerous to me when it comes to technology are comments like yours, and the unveiling of the iPad seems to have stirred up a whole new wave of them. technology isn't politics. there's no need to pick sides. if you have a well-reasoned thought or opinion, make it. but if you need vitriolic chum to stir up the water in order try to sell it, then i think keeping it to yourself would be better for everyone.
like John C. Reilly says in the movie The Promotion "were all just out here trying to get some food... sometimes, we bump into each other."
@MollyC which is why all the col kids are walking around with an Archos 5? fail.
macs became cool because they were elegant, smart, and flat out better in a lot of key ways that matter to creative and/or influential people.
why is windows 7 cooler than any MS OS before? not because it's obscure. but because it has caught up with the mac OS in a lot of important ways, and actually innovated in some cool ways of it's own.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I hope this outsells the useless iPad.
@Javindo It would be nice but its not gonna happen, Apple can hype a rock and people will buy it. Both are nice but apple is destined to win this one.
@Javindo
Yes the iPad just looks like a bigger iPod touch/iPhone (without voice).
@Javindo How can you say ipad is useless. When you use that word, it means ipad cannot do ANYTHING.
@Javindo It won't because it doesn't have a fruit on it. However that is fine by me. I don't need a device to be trendy. I need a device to do what I want it to do. Apple invented the rock! Awesome!
@TekWarrior and the slate just looks like windows 7 with a touch screen. Have fun with that! if MS would get off there asses and produce a real touch screen UI for this, then I would be game. But the way it is now I would rather use an iPad even with its limitations.

@OddManOut
No. Useless means "without use". Since the iPad can be used to hold papers down, it is clearly not "useless".
@Javindo You people, havent seen the best of all time!

obscurity doesn't equal coolness.
utility + style = coolness.
