iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 drops in
Suspense! Drama! Surprises! Unrealistic expectations! It's always a veritable roller coaster of emotions whenever Apple gets around to cutting a new SDK build -- and without a doubt, iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 is no exception. We don't yet have a good read on what's new here, so if you're a member of Apple's $99 dev program and happen to get it downloaded and installed, let us know if you find anything awesome, like an iPhone 4 or iPad 2. Or, you know, anything else. Have fun!

does this beta magically adds a camera hardware in it?
@unknownsolo No. Even Apple's magic is revolutionary - it takes ordinary things and makes them not special.
@unknownsolo Now that would actually be magical.
@mikethebigo
wrong way round
Does anyone know if the current iPhones and iPod touches will recieve the 3.2 update in march.
@DallasB: That's a statement. You meant to ask a question. Questions use question marks.
@Prokanda
Just because I didn't put a ? Doesn't matter. if your smart enough to know what I wrote as it being in the question format, not my fault my phones corrects punction. Do you the point or do I need to put a ? In for you.
@DallasB
If your smart enough you would know that a question mark makes it a question and a period makes it a statement. Go back to grade school!
@DallasB
" Do you the point or do I need to put a ? In for you." Hey, I think you forgot a question mark on that last sentence.
*ducks*
@DallasB
This thread is a fucking train wreck of bad grammar.
Looks like your autocorrect is doing more than replacing your question marks with periods.
"If your smart enough"
.....
@N900 exactly what I was thinking too... if you're going to be pointing out people's mistakes, make sure you don't make any yourself.
@Jaylittles531 "If your smart enough" its supposed to be "if YOU'RE smart enough." Who let you correct grammar? Idiot.
@DallasB
How the hell would anyone know that?
yawn
Omg the bezel, save the children and women first!
Trolls make me lol.
Will this be the first update to not support the first-gen hardware?
@Dr Blight Though that looks forward to juicy new capabilities. That would risk the fragmentation issues currently plaguing Android
@Zer0Kage
I disagree. Everyone must cut compatibility at some point. The thing that causes fragmentation is when you start cutting compatibility in a time period shorter than the average device life cycle. The original generations of iPhones have gotten plenty of updates. In my opinion, Apple only really needs to support the 3G and 3GS at this point. Theses devices were both sold within the last 2 years and so it's reasonable to expect a decent number of people are using them. Supporting the 2G just cripples what you can do with your platform.
@Dr Blight
I still use an Edge iphone, and I know plenty that still do. I don't think 3 years is outdated for anything, marketting departments just want you to think that.
I don't see what could possibly be in this update that would date the iphone edge, though I would upgrade if Apple brought out a significantly better iPhone. But I'm pretty sure the iPhone Edge can handle the 3D bookshelf turning to reveal the iBookstore ... assuming Apple wants to include that. I've never purchased anything on iTunes, especially not through my iPhone ... but I would devour books on my iPhone through the iBookstore. I'm sure the realize the increased revenue is better than trying to make people buy an iPad if they want to read a book. I might buy an iPad, maybe a second generation one, anyway (not that I would buy one just for the bookstore, though. I like real books, but I'd buy a few iBooks to keep on my phone for convenience).
@Dr Blight
I was thinking that too. I think it will fall to the devs though as there's nothing stopping them from making current apps that will only run effectively on the newer 3GS hardware due to the increased graphics horsepower. Not sure about the memory thing though as Apple may already restrict the maximum you can use.
Maybe a current dev can confirm if they do this?
@Delta i doubt that they'll stop supporting the 2g unless they drop the 3g too, which has the same processor and RAM.
@Dr Blight I dread the day I need to replace my first generation iPod Touch. God knows every update has made it slower. But when the day comes that I need to replace it either because of newer updates or worn-out hardware, that's when I'll decide if I stay with Apple or try another brand.
@FrankJ
Really? Thank you for taking the time to share you expert opinion on this unreleased product that you have absolutely no interest in. I'm sure you are correct and the iPad will fail.... just like the iPhone did and the iPod before it.
@Downpour: While I think that the iPod and iPhone filled very popular market segments with stellar products, I don't think you can lump them in with the iPad. A solid phone with a lot of apps and a solid PMP aren't the same as a massive tablet. You can't fit a tablet in your pocket like the other two that you mentioned. Also, at a starting price of 500 bones with no 3G, I don't think the iPad is going to be quite as widespread as their other "portable" devices.
@Prokanda
The original iPhone had a starting price of $499 when it launched and that didn't / doesn't have 3g
@Prokanda
Well obviously it isn't going sell as much as the iPhone... but that doesn't mean it is going to 'fail'.
"You can't fit it in your pocket" That's like saying a car is rubbish because it can't fly. This isn't a 'portable device' like a phone, it isn't trying to be... If you want a full file system / physical keyboard / webcam... we have something for that, it's called a laptop.
The iPad will have a 'pick up and play' factor that you just don't get with a laptop. It will give you that amazing speed and instant on/off app feel that you get with the iPhone but with far more powerful and flexible apps.
Personally I will be using it for digital painting as well as browsing, playing gaming etc when I'm not working... I think my laptop is going to get a lot less use.
The thing is, this irrational iPad hatred seems to have infected much of the tech community. It has become 'fashionable' to rant about how pointless it is... but once people get a hold of it, I think opinions will change rapidly.
The reality is the vast majority of people hate the way computers currently work, they have no idea how to accomplish even the simplest of tasks on a PC or Mac. The iPad will change all that, it is a computer that you mum/dad/gran could use... seriously, it is going to change everything.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but we won't know either way for a year or so... I just wish people would give it chance and quit all this mindless Apple bashing. How come there isn't as much hatred when someone like Sony/Acer/Toshiba roll out their latest cheep plastic rubbish that falls to pieces in the first five minutes?
@Downpour
I couldn't agree more, mate. Especially about the irrational hatred part. It may not be the greatest invention since fire, but I don't think it will fail.
@Prokanda
When the iPhone first came out my win mo device at the time - AT&T tilt had far superior specs. Me and many others thought the iPhone would fail. No multi tasking, no 3g, no physical keyboard, poor email integration.... to me it was a pure gimmick that was bound to fail. But I then got a touch and was blown away by the usability and thoughful design. It's an example of superb product design. The last product I felt the same way about was the PS2. Let's see how the ipad turns out....
This is exciting, breaking news!

No one cares anymore sorry apple :(
@MoonWalkerCTE .. yeh that's why almost every Apple article has a ridiculous numbers of comments. Sure they are mostly idiot fanbois but you can't escape the fact that people do care what Apple does.
@MoonWalkerCTE except us lowly developers who count on things like this to feed our seeds. Believe it or not, Apple is the only one keeping us afloat right now. So f*ck your opinion. I got mouths to feed.
@MoonWalkerCTE
I care, since I'm planning on making a boatload of money from iPad applications. Maybe if you stopped trolling each and every Apple-related topic on this side you could do something similar, be it for iPad, WP7 or whatever. What drives you people if I may ask?
@youngluck don't even comment on these trolls just keep making amazing apps like you have been doing. Thanks
@youngluck Actually I love apple I just wanted to get upranked for once. I guess I failed again. No matter what I do I get downranked. If I say I love apple I get downranked :( Got an Iphone 3GS, Macbook pro unibody 15" and a cinemadisplay.
@MoonWalkerCTE Dude, you just don't get upranks by saying "no one cares". It makes you sound unpleasant and a bit condescending.
No hard feelings though, live and learn! ^^
@youngluck I second what angermeans said. Keep making great applications. I am buying an iPad because I think the iPad will be outrageous.
This isn't because the specs or bullet points of the device, but because I think the applications that developers like you will make are going to blow my mind :).
So keep up the good work.
@MoonWalkerCTE
Try to add something substantive to the discussion. Maybe you'll get upranked.
For $99 couldn't engadget become a member, they always seem to be a valid source of juicy information..?
@FORDY - have you seen the family guy episode about who actually writes these "fortune lines" in fortune cookies? Same thing goes for Engadget....
@FORDY - Im sure they can and are, but Apple's NDA is rather restrictive. Engadget would be breaking numerous rules by posting the release notes I believe.
(Im not a member of any Apple dev programs.)
@FORDY
I thought you didn't have to pay the 100 bucks to have access to the SDK. I thought you only had to pay 100 bucks if you wanted to publish it to the App Store. IIRC, you can just make a Apple account and download the SDK for free.
@Kevin6432 thats because this is a beta release. the full sdk is free to download, but only subscribers can use the betas.
Are these developer not under some sort of NDA? To disclose information would ahead of release would be devastating.
@Shlooky I don't believe the SDK is under any kind of NDA. If so it's one of the most loosely enforced one ever.
@Myles Taylor wrong.
