There's no denying that the
Mini 5 is real, but up until now, we've had to provide all of our own
promotional material. At long last, it seems as if the suits in Round Rock are finally getting around to crafting the first advertisements for the upcoming slate, and while we knew about the 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, capacitive touch front buttons, front-facing VGA camera (for video chatting) and the 30-pin docking connector, we
weren't aware of Dell's plans to reveal a slew of vivacious color options. If this here flyer proves legitimate, we could eventually see the Mini 5 available in an array of premium finishes and hues (thanks,
Design Studio!), and we're hoping for a few different spec builds as well. So, are you opting for the pink, or are you crossing your fingers in hopes that Dell allows you to print that embarrassing shot of you and Mr. T on the rear of one?
Update: Oh, snap! We just landed a few more official slides from an internal Dell document, and it's safe to say that the company is going to call this beauty the
Streak. Or, at least that's the internal codename. Better still, it looks as if it'll launch with an Amazon content partnership, which will bring a Kindle e-book reader app, Amazon MP3, Amazon video streams and pretty much any other material that Amazon sells in digital form right to the slate. C'mon now -- how's about a ship date and a price?
übercool! can't wait for it to come out in AWS 1700!
When can i PREorder?
wish for android 2.1 (2.2) on it
@pachi72
thats totally unfair!
iPad for ATT, mini5 for ATT. Nothing awesome for t-mobile (Wind Mobile in Canada)
Nexus one sucks anyway...
@pachi72 if it doesn't support AWS they are missing a large, loyal, and satisfied customer base.
imo a device that large should have the board real estate to support the chip sets for both bands...
I mean look at the new Dell Mini 10 for T-Mobile, supports UMTS/HSDPA on AWS/2100/900/850

yeah, the netbook has more real estate...but who knows...
HEAPLOADS of WANT
@grush
YEAH! WTHECK. Where I want some stuff for t-mob.
@grush i spy 3 buttons. WP7S version in the future? Please?
@grush
I have split feelings on the Mini 5. On the one hand, the specs are fantastic and the design is solid. On the other hand, it's way to big to be used as a phone, but too small for a slate. I wish they would come out with a Mini 7 which would be basically the same machine with bigger screen and more storage.
@tonicboy
Nonsense. 95% of what I do with my phone is web, email and apps, and this is the perfect platform for that. Most people don't spend much time actually talking on their phones, and there are always BT headsets for that. I'd much rather have a big, fast mini-tablet like this than a tiny, cramped phone. If this ever makes it to Tmobile, I will definitely be replacing my aging G1 with a Slate.
"3G" by itself doesn't tell us what we need to know. Which network standard does it use?
Also, what about GPS? And is it REAL GPS, or the half-assed version that Apple's peddling (which can't fall back on regular GPS functionality without the cellular network).
@tonicboy
I'm not so sure about the design. I'd be a lot more interested if it had the HD2's bezel, instead of the iPhone's bezel.
@grush HIjacked...
My "iPad" has "Streaks". Ooooh yea...
Seriously, I'm buying a Streak. :)
@Information Central
Why do people insist on asking what 3G a device supports? You have it totally backwards. Dell will shop it out to different carriers and depending on who buys, they will create a versions for that carrier with the right radio(s). Do you really think manufacturers create a device with a specific radio and then say "Oh, you want to put in an order of 1 million handsets, Verizon? What a shame, we only have this in GSM."
As for GPS, the iPhone uses aGPS, a technology which may or may not rely on cell network information. The iPhone's implementation uses the information when available but does indeed fall back on "true" GPS, so you can use it when hiking in the middle of the woods. Of course, GPS information isn't very useful when most mapping applications require a data connection to download maps.
Well, if it's Android then kiss my interest good bye. No way on earth I'm sticking my contact, file... information on Google's cloud. I'm a user so couldn't care less about 'open architecture,' etc. If it doesn’t sync w/ Outlook (without moving through/to a cloud) then the OS serves NO purpose. OK for my son in college with nothing but video, music and contact info for hot ladies but I’ve got biz data to protect.
@pachi72 Hopefully they'll support 3rd party applications.....
@Chip I agree completely with you. If this comes to T-Mobile I will replace my G1
I would like this for the hardware and that it's seemingly a "Google Experience" phone (not bogged with Sense UI, Motoblur or any other proprietary UI that holds back updates).
But not on AT&T. AT&T has proven they want to gimp and censor Android OS. I'd like this on Verizon, so I'm hoping for a CDMA version.

"The modem connection has quadband GSM and then will be offered in various SKUs suited for European, AT&T or T-Mobile AWS 3G."
@grush
Nice device, but
if the rumored $1100 price is true
then that's a deal breaker.
@AlfaCat Yea, I heard about it, but kinda doesn't make sense - in this age of cheap stuff.
even apples iphone (revolutionary device in a way) is 199. and iPad for 499.
doesn't make sense for cheap-o dell to market something valued at 400 MAX for 1100, don't you agree?
Michael Knight could kick Mr. T's ass any day of the week.
i wonder if dell will make that 'nail polish' cover design..
@glenskey your avatar still amazes me..
I don't care what color it is, just release it so I can have it!
@mikethebigo
you mean the iPhorgot-what-I-was-using-i-want-this-one-so-bad phone?
@victor
It's just a shame that they could not have gottne 800 x 600 instead of the bastard 800 x 480 that the pic says.
Either way, want, want, want
@mikethebigo
OMG...I'm really effing wanting this...all i need to see now is a price tag and a release date!!!!!
...and im a tad bit interested in this color thing, are they saying we'll be able to design our own logo on the back? (like one of tmobile's phones) If so...I wanna make a white silhouette of a hand slapping steve jobs in the face!
@Steve Miller Oh I want that design too
@rederikus
What a stupid comment. It's 800x480 because its 16:9. 800x600 is 4:3
I think I'm gonna have to pick one of these up.
@daseff
Eh... after I saw the Courier mockups, most of the other small tablets don't do it for me. I'd rather have a clamshell to talk on and a Courier for everything else, but that's just me.
uhh.. 30-pin?.. This may be an insanely stupid question but is that the same as the iPhone's?
@jellotime91
Insanely stupid...
@jellotime91
no
@jellotime91 Definitely not the same, as mentioned in our impressions post.
You had me at "Dell Mini 5".
@Hexydes
LOL!
Looks like I'll be passing down my Archos 5 Android to one of the wee ones very soon.
This Looks Like A Serious Contender!
Front camera :) made my day
We are going to have to have a face-off between the Dell Mini 5 and the HTC HD2 to see which is the ONE phone to rule them all.
(that and I'm trying to figure out which I should get when my contract runs out in May)
@jaleman
Don't forget the HTC Supersonic! FORGEEEEEEEEEE!!!
what about a picture of Gates and Jobs embracing?
Very Cool!
Looks like I'll be passing down my Archos 5 Android/32gb to one of the wee-ones in the near future.
@DaHarder Archos probably stays 2x cheaper with 2x more features. Archos is being copied by the big brands, which is good. It validates the market and Archos can then sell 10x more devices to a market that is educated to the form factor.
@Charbax
You do realize that even if this does come out at two times the price, saying it has half the features is a ridiculous statement, right?
this really is a nice looking product. i like the back a lot.
"DELL" icious...... want it.
Hitler with bunny ears would get my vote.
wow front facing camera! i want!
perhaps I'm one of the few, but I have absolutely ZERO interest in this. I don't understand the purpose. is it a phone? is it trying to be a tablet? it is a next gen Nokia 880?
as for the front facing camera for video calling, how long do they expect people to hold up their hand in the air to face the camera? is there a stand?
what's the battery life? storage? I'm surprised people are getting so excited about this when they know so little about it.
@digitalgopher

Sorry, were you talking about the ipad?
