Microsoft shows off XNA games running on Windows Phone, full 3D is a go

Microsoft spoke to the ease of its Direct3D development platform, which was built by the same folks responsible for the first-gen Xbox (though we're under the impression that most of the similarities end there). What we saw of The Harvest was built in "two or three weeks," mostly from scratch, and folks who've already built games for XNA in VisualStudio shouldn't have much trouble with a port from the sound of things: "very, very easy," said Microsoft. Right now developers can do their testing in Windows, but there should be a Windows Phone 7 Series emulator out for devs eventually -- though it's unclear right now if it'll make it into the upcoming XNA release scheduled for the coming month. Other details are up in the air like support for using a device's camera in game, along with that fancy pause and resume cross-platform function we saw demo'd at TechEd. One thing that's clear is that there's no fast track for porting OpenGL games to the Direct3D environment, but that's not stopping regular suspects like Oberon, Sega, Glu, EA, Popcap, Hudson Entertainment, Namco, Konami and Microsoft Game Studios from signing on. We'll have to wait until MIX for more details and hopefully some shareable demos! Below we have a video of that same platforming game we saw from TechEd being demo'd across platforms, though sadly with the save state sending disabled.

Beautiful.
@gtharea EPIC WIN!
@gtharea What is on top of that xbox?
@werty1432k a fan to prevent RROD, since it's a first gen
Of course, I actually have no idea what it is :)
@gtharea
Now I'm impressed.
@gtharea
iPhone killer!!!
Now where is that psp phone so we can see all the whole picture
@werty1432k It's a developer unit. Programmers can use these Xboxes to test their programs on immediately and do all sorts of debugging and testing. It's like an unlocked Xbox.
@werty1432k
It's actually a developer version of the Xbox360.
@CaptainPlanet Xboxes do have a shitty way of thermal control. The fans on my desktop PC are quieter, yet they push much more air than the loud fans on the Xbox.
I hope that future Xboxes can actually stay below 60 Celsius... right now they get ridiculously hot.
@gtharea yes, it's a beautiful screen shot, but a few questions
1. How much will a game like this cost?
2. How long does it take to create a game like this?
Unless you are a hardcore gamer, I really don't think it's that big of sell point for me.
@gtharea Yes beautiful! I love gaming on my iPhone so I'm a believer of the functionality of the form factor. What really gets me going is the larger, higher rez screen. My 3.5" 320x480 iPhone looks more and more outdated by the minute.
@teco221
1) Price. Who knows its a demo atm.
2) They said it had taken roughly 3 weeks building from scratch.
Don't have to be a hardcore gamer to wanna game. Buses,Trains,Cab drivers and family are boring. Excellent time for some gaming.
@gtharea
This really could be the killer feature that drives WinPhone adoption. While a phone needs to be a phone first and foremost, gaming is a huge value-add to any modern device. The iPhone is a great gaming platform, but iPhone devs generally are inexperienced. With this, I'm hoping that major studios will bring their XNA experience to the table and produce some killer games.
@gtharea
I wonder if we can get some COD MW 1 or 2 lovin on there..Or anything by EA..
@Federaly
No wonder there isn't any more family bonding nowadays.
People just do their own stuff, resulting in broken family who don't communicate.
But, thats my opinion, people can do whatever they want ^_^
@gtharea
Fucking gorgeous. This looks like high-end 2007 PC gaming to be honest. Lovely.
@werty1432k The XBOX 360 Developer console has more RAM than the standard unit, double that of the Standard XBOX 360 (1GB GDDR3 RAM)
@werty1432k That is a developer Xbox, it's not a regular Xbox... so that's why!
@gtharea: Beautiful indeed... and so is that Acer convertible tablet that was powering the demo!
@Graphical Mind
That's actually not totally correct... only the XNA units have 1GB of RAM, that unit does not.
@werty1432k, to answer your question, that is a sidecar that gives the Xbox debugging/game emulation capabilities via a direct USB connection, as well as a 60 GB HDD internal.
This looks great though! Great graphics for a phone!
The war is on!
@(Unverified)
The first company smart enough to make a device with gaming buttons will win this chicken fight,
put you hand down Nokia, no side talkin' allowed
@JeremyBenthem
Sony Ericsson has got a huge number of phones with 2 gaming buttons (W910, K800, W600, F305 ...) but the way they are implemented really sucks
LETS GEET IT OWWWWWWWN!!!
@CHICHIgetdaYAYO Don't you mean "on"? "Let's get it own" doesn't make any sense.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget +1
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget It's a southern accent, douche-balls :)

@engadgetcomexcludeengadget: Ah do declare, you've been PWWWWWWWNT, son!
@djt
He meant Noob Saibot. Don't be offended...lol.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know it's early, but I can't believe I'm actually gitty with excitement over Microsoft products.
You had us worried for a few years there, but I think I can confidently say that we love the direction your going. Keep up the good work!
p.s. Don't forget us Zune HD owners...
@MONKEY They've already forgotten us. The official word is that XNA 4.0 is not for Zune HD. We're stuck with 3.1--which means no 3d.
@User Formerly Known as Dave WHAT.
@FallenArms3 *WHAT?
@User Formerly Known as Dave
I know I should be angry, but I just can't get mad at my Zune HD. It gives me all the music I could want, and it already has Audio Surf. I can't get mad at a device that's already so good.
I will be looking forward to a Zune HD2 with support for these games, though!
Impressive. If you think about this, it's really revolutionary to have the same code (maybe slightly modified) moved across different platforms (PC, Phone, etc) so seamlessly.
Though, maybe slightly off topic, I'd like to know more about this Windows Phone with the three buttons we've been seeing a lot of recently. Is it just for prototyping? Is this what we will see on day 1? What's the processor and GPU? Memory? etc, etc.
@Accidental I agree, it is actually revolutionary, especially for devs. And I don;t think too much has ever been said about the prototype windows has been showing off.
@Accidental
I think the hardware is probably the requirements that they have out right now., So, 1Ghz Snapdragonish processor, 512mb(?) of ram, and most likely more than a couple gigs of internal memory (Really hoping there's support for additional flash memory, but I doubt it =[ ). Here's to hoping these games run on the zune hd as well, I need something to do during pharmaceutics class.
@honestgabe
Windows Phone require Snapdragon processor and 256+ DRAM memory. All Windows Phone are required to have the three button - back, windows, and search key.
@dez they have confirmed that there will be no support for the zune hd and that only the zhd2 will support xna 4.0.
OMGWTFBBQ!!!
Not bad.
Wow, Microsoft has completely NOT fucked things up lately. In fact, they've been doing an amazing job. Major props MS, can't wait to see what you come up with next.
@Special Agent Steve
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Only thing they need now is a decent search engine and browser to achieve world domination.
@BlackedOut
Have you checked out Pivot (from Microsoft labs)? It's still early in development, but really, really sick new way at looking at massive amounts of data. It basically categorizes massive search fields into small sections making it easy to look at stuff. Pretty neat stuff IMO.
@BlackedOut Have you used Bing lately? It is in no way reminiscent of Live or MSN.
The image and video searches are both miles above Google's, and I'd call the regular search "on par" with Google.
@MioTheGreat, and has Unicode indexing.
@MioTheGreat
I agree with you on the video and images but no way is the search on par with Google. Side by side windows using Bing and Google always brings at least 50% more relevant search results with Google.
Live was horrible, i think Bing is great, but search needs work.
