That certainly was a timely
review, wasn't it? Dutch site
Tweakers.net is reporting through a number of its forum members that previously ordered
HTC Legends are being scheduled for delivery as early as today, beating the phone's
announced early second quarter availability by a solid three weeks. That's great news for anyone comfortable sticking with a lower-res display and a middle-of-the-road processor in exchange for one of the slickest, most metallic shells on the market today -- but for those hoping for something a little more... ahem,
Desire-able, the wait continues. And yes, we'd like to apologize profusely for that pun.
SO wait is this coming to the US and if so what carriers?
I'm hating that chromium look though. Just looks too nasty for my tastes...
And does it have a chin as pronouced as the Hero or no?
@TheLionOfAzzalle
No, it's not coming to the US. And if it did, why would you want it to be carrier specific?
@pika2000 He's prob. locked down to a CDMA carrier and hoping for a non-GSM version.
@TheLionOfAzzalle
What would happen if you imported this version and put an AT&T/T-mob SIM in it?
@hempo It works, but no 3G. EDGE only. For the import price, might as well get the Nexus One.
@hempo Most likely you would have to get it unlocked (assuming you bought a euro carrier's version as opposed to the unlocked HTC version). And while it would work with an ATT sim, the 3G coverage would be less than optimal since most newer euro phones don't have the 850 3G band.
@TheLionOfAzzalle
Actually, I beg to differ with pika2000.., rumor has it that the Legend is going to be released as the Hero2 on Sprint. That same rumor also says that, like the original Sprint Hero, it will be "chinless".
@Michael B Rumors don't mean anything. They are only wishful thinking from the fans. Until I see official announcement from HTC, this is not coming to the US, period.
@TheLionOfAzzalle
AT&T is supose to get the phone.
This is correct, www.pdashop.nl had already shipped the first ones yesterday and today the first ones arrived :)
@xesisoj http://www.pdashop.nl/product/90878/htc-legend.html
jealous, really jealous.
but engadget, why do you always have to make phones sound obsolete in almost every announcement. we know it's not high end specs, but that doesn't mean it's not great. quit putting people's work down.
If they don't want to hear about substandard specs perhaps they should consider not using older processors while still managing mediocre battery life. Not to mention mediocre video, again, most likely a result of the processor. Nothing stops you from masturbating to the device, they however point out the good with the not so good.
@Aridon
what a ridiculously childish reply....
@Aridon Except its not an old processer. Its a new middle tier processor. They are not using the old 528Mhz Qualcomm, they are using the newer 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor.
Nonetheless, I am in agreement, a device with such a sexy high quality housing deserves better specs. Its sad that both the Nexus One and the Desire have crappy cheap plastic housings, but better specs. Ever since my X1, I can't see myself getting aphone with crappy plastic housing.
So does it support us 3g support? More specifically can I use a t-mobile Sim with it and have it work correctly?
@Certifiedfryguy Nope, it only has dual-band UMTS chip. So EDGE only in the US.
@pika2000
That sucks with a capital B..
Oh well... HD2 it is then for a few months..
What's that thing at the bottom? Is it an optical trackpad that replaces the trackball on the hero?
@GmanC yes..
"middle-of-the-road processor" is quite harsh. That's like me saying the Core i7 processors are average processors because there are faster ones in use out there.
And why the hell did you apologise for making a pun? That shit is weak.
@Hydraulics It is middle of the road, with the higher end is Snapdragon. The analogy would be that this is Core i5 vs i7 (Snapdragon).
@Hydraulics pika2000 hit the nail on the head -- it's absolutely middle-of-the-road, whereas the Snapdragon series would be Qualcomm's high end.
@Chris Ziegler
Maybe middle of the road for Qualcomm but in the overall range of processors it is low end. Not too much better then the garbage MSM7200 they have been using for 3 years.
Enough with crap processors! What a waste putting that junk in there. Should have gotten a Snapdragon.
@Peter F
They want to keep the final production costs down.
Coincidentally there's a Switchfoot album called The Legend of Chin.
Since the Legend is shipping, does this mean us other Sense UI (Hero/Eris) users will be getting our upgrade to 2.1 OS soon??
@jhearne86 keep dreaming, it just means you have to buy this one instead.
@AlexSanchez yeah, since it's in the UK and I'm here in the states. 2.1 is on it's way, we just hope it's before March is done.
Hmm, Please stop dissing all HTC products. This is the last time I'll visit this blog.
@bstrm
you'll be sadly missed...
@bstrm if you had read thereview you would know that it isnt that great of a product not a bias against htc. the phone isnt everything it can and should be
@jascop They seemed to like the n1 (with snapdragon), I don't care what processor I have, I care about the user experience, is it smooth or not? The Legend is smoother in both web browsing and in the system compared to my n1. But Engadget always complain about the specs and not about the user experience.
no care b/c this is Engadget US not UK.
@senormatt
No, I'm pretty sure this is just engadget...
Try opening engadget.co.uk , just for fun :P
Meh. MSM7227. Should have put a Snapdragon in there.
Bad pun is bad.
It's a mid-end device. It's got mid-end specs. Live with it and quit whining.
Even though the old processor is still performs way better than the HTC Hero, it just runs much more smooth. Browsing is also a lot more convenient on the Legend compared to the Hero. So for a mid-range price, you get an awesome phone. What's wrong with that?
It seems people are being harsh on this device just because it hasn't been announced for the US and they have no interest in it. I seriously wonder why. Battery life is by no means worse than on any other smartphone (despite what Engadget says), the screens display quality is amazing, the build quality is unique (aluminum unibody), the camera now has a LED flash (compared to the Hero), and it runs on Éclair 2.1. It's an infinite times better than devices like the Motorola Cliq/Dext/Backflip/Devour/whatever.
@Merkie People are just disappointed the only snapdragon android phone available is the N1.
@PrinceAli, that one more Snapdragon device than the rest of the world.
See what happens you guys review people see how shity a phone it is the company sees that everyone sees how shity a phone it is they start shiping before anybody figures it out how shity it is by the time they do it's to late and they will be feeding us another shity phone to keep us quit
Does every phone that gets released have to be absolute top line, home run material? This looks like a cool phone with good features. There's a market for phones at every level from low end to high end and in between. I like that we have lots of choices.
OK, the battery life is a real problem, the camera is mediocre, and the CPU is good, but below the cutting edge. But, it's got a decent RAM bump, an AMOLED screen, ships with the new Android 2.1, uses a standard micro-usb port, is fairly durable for a smartphone, and has a very nice, light, and slim physical design.
This isn't the perfect handset, but close enough. I would buy this in a heart beat if it or something similar comes to Sprint. I would prefer a Supersonic or Desire, and would also jump at a newer WebOS device as well but I hope Sprint can give us anything better than the first-gen Pre and the Hero as I am dying to upgrade.
I'm holding out for an octo-core 5ghz, water cooled, 20" OLED+ HD handset. Anything less is useless for making phone calls.
That's EXACTLY what I need in a phone, might as well add a GPU that can calculate more then 6 teraflops, otherwise the pictures when I call might be a bit blurry...
Where's the Desire review? I've already pre-ordered it at Play.com but just in case there's something I should know!
AT&T is suppose to get the phone just like verizon is getting the incredible. There both htc phones that resemble the nexus one.
I'm waiting on something more INCREDIBLE. Verizon? Yes, I'm talking to you!
I have some strong opinions about this statement: "comfortable sticking with a lower-res display". IMHO, I dislike the trending back to larger phones. For years and years the goal was to make them smaller. Now they seem to be getting larger and larger.
For me, I think my current iPhone is too big. It isn't comfortable in my pocket. It'd be great if I carried a purse, but since that isn't socially acceptable, I don't.
I really like the size of the HTC Hero. At least I like that it feels smaller than my iPhone. I'd love to pick up a good (small) android handset like this for ATT.
I understand the benefits of having larger screen real estate, but I never utilize my phone for more than email, calendars, and rudimentary web stuff.
I just figured I'd post saying that there ARE people out there that value a smaller handset, even if it means a lower res screen. We're a minority most likely, and I fear the trend to larger handsets will make the smaller ones disappear for good :(
@clearThumbtack Amen sir! Not to mention this phone looks a lot more durable that either the Nexus One or the Desire - Which when you keep your phone in your pocket and aren't too careful with it is quite a bonus.
Definitely going to pre-order myself this lovely phone :D
