PlayStation Move first hands-on (update: video!)

- The controllers are light. Much more akin to the DualShock3 than the Wiimote in heft, and we're guessing that's due to Sony's continued love of rechargeable batteries.
- The main controller does have some subtle vibration (not DualShock or Wiimote level, but present), but we're not sure yet about the subcontroller.
- We hate to say this about "pre-alpha" software, but we're feeling lag. An on-rails shooter we tried out, dubbed The Shoot, was discernibly inferior to shooting experiences we've had on the Wii, both in precision and refresh rate of the aiming cursor.
- The gladiator game is about as fun as it looks, we'll have video after the break momentarily. Unfortunately, while it's less of a defined experience than something like the sword game on Wii Sports Resort, you're still working through a library of sensed, pre-defined actions instead of a true 1:1 fighting game with simulated physics. Not that it isn't possible with PlayStation Move, just that it's not this.
- The lightness of the controllers means we might be feeling less of that Wiimote fatigue, always a good thing! There's an aspect of the controller that feels a little cheap, but at the same time we wouldn't call it fragile.
- As far as we can tell, the control scheme for Socom 4 is quite similar to dual-controller shooter setups on the Wii, with the camera moving based on your aiming cursor hitting the edge. It's hard to see this as the preferred hardcore setup, but we're told it's configurable, so we'll try and see what else is on offer.
- The system seemed to have a bit of trouble understanding the configuration of our body in a swordfighting stance: even though we selected "left handed," it was putting our sword arm forward instead of our shield. Right-handers didn't seem to have similar problems, and we're sure this will be ironed out in time, but it certainly shows that the controllers aren't magical in their space-detection prowess.
- As would be expected, you're supposed to stand relatively center on the TV, and at a certain optimal distance. The system is forgiving, but there's a sweet spot that users will undoubtedly have to learn.
- Lag is less prominent on Socom 4, and we'd say we're pretty accurate with the controller already, though the framerate choppiness of this pre-alpha build obviously hampers that a bit. We did get a slight feel of being in "scene to scene" shootouts instead of a free-roaming FPS, perhaps a design choice to mitigate the limited camera movement offered by the controller, but we'll have to see more levels to know for sure.
Update, final edition: We've got a new video with close-up walkthroughs of the controllers and some in-depth gameplay of Socom 4.

Let us know if it's cool!
@Keegsta It's funny how they photoshopped in that glowing coloured ball on top of the controller. I don't get it but it is funny. Could you imagine if Sony actually made something that ridiculous looking.
@Steve2000
I lol'd
@Keegsta
not yet impressed..sorry =/
@abedinthehouse For the record, I think it looks dumb, just like the Wii.
@Keegsta
I love my Playstation, but this looks like the exact same thing as Wii...and I don't want one of those either.
@Keegsta
My thoughts exactly, also the same functionality as the Wiimote
not to be a MSFT fanboy or anything, but if anything Natal actually looks like it will bring a difference experience than the Wiimote, this just looks like it will bring almost the exact same thing......just in a different console.
@abedinthehouse don't forget about the ps2 and the eye-toy.....Natal is a copy of that.
@Steve2000
I think anything that helps with 1st person shooters on a console gets some interest from me. Shooters are the only thing left keeping me playing on my PC honestly.
P.S. You want CHEESE ON THAT!
@Steve2000 it's a nubby light saber
@custmmade Ps3 Move is a modded wiimote, project Natal is a very enhanced eyetoy. Not a fanboy but project natal seems more user friendly for the non-gamers.
IMO
@Thor e I don't know why anyone would want to play an FPS with a keyboard and mouse. That would suck.
@Keegsta

@custmmade natal is a lot different from the eye toy...infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor for interpreting 3d environments, 3d gesture recognition, facial recognition, skeletal mapping (allowing natal to accurately predict limb location w/o actually see it). the only thing that they have in common is that they use a camera...
@Keegsta I thought using this type of device for FPS games would be better than the controller sticks but it looks terrible. Way too much wrist action required, which I need to save for other activities.
This type of device is great for navigating a TV screen like a browser window or point-and-click game and maybe a painting game like Natal showed but not for the majority of the games.
Complete ripoff of wii with the addition of a ridiculous lighted orb thing. How lame is that?? Will this just end up being another PSPgo flop??? I checked my magic 8 ball and "all signs point to yes"...
@Keegsta - It would be if GOW3 supported it. Does anyone know if it does?
Regardless of Natal's technology - if the result is no different for the user than the eye-toy, then it will fail.
The Sony Move (getting better on the name, I must say) must launch as a better experience than the wii-mote plus. If they can't improve on the wii, then its a non-starter.
If Microsoft and Sony really want to drop kick Nintendo, they should cross license the Move and Natal - motion controller + body positioning would be the best combination for immersive gaming.
@custmmade You just keep telling yourself that, if you think it'll make you sleep better at night.
@Keegsta Doesn't matter if it's cool if nobody makes games for it. That's exactly the problem with the Wii.
@genghiskhan looks like a LightBoxcutter to me... Luke had one when he was a stockboy at WalMart
WHERES THE VIDEO
@SEDIBOY Please be trying to be funny.
@flarkle Please be trying to use proper english
@SEDIBOY If we're going to try to be using proper English, I believe that it's "WHERE'S THE VIDEO"
@Mitch
"WHERE'S THE VIDEO?"
:P
Not totally down with flailing around a flashlight, but it has potential.
@Nitesh
would you be down for flailing around one of the coolest looking, motion sensing, glowing, dildos? no need to answer, im sure you have seen the light by now
@Nitesh
I have a feeling the one with the bulb uses more batteries.
@Nitesh
Jefferson Starship had one of these controllers decades ago!

No excuse to buy a Wii... Nintendo is goin down!
@Pedro0792 Wanna make a bet?
@Pedro0792 not necessarily...still some good lookin games comin out for da wii (red steel 2, metroid:other m, the next zelda game, etc.)
we'll just have 2 wait n see...
@Pedro0792
You're kidding right? I don't have a Wii or a PS3 but........
PS3 and this craptacular thing: $399.99
Wii: $199.99
Yeah, there is no reason to buy a Wii now, because spending twice the price of a wii, to wave around a flashlight is what was stopping casual gamers from buying a PS3,
@Paul J
But with a PS3, you get the other kind of gaming too. And a Blu-Ray player. And a true online service. Oh, and tracking that works.
@Pedro0792 While Sony is playing catch up Ninty is on to the next best thing.
@Pedro0792
Haha you guys, different market segments. Both companies and systems will retain mass market success; neither is going anywhere. Take up your inhalers. Breathe...
@Paul J If you count the bluray player that is 200$ is almost the same and you get a better graphic experience
@packy17
The point is, that the Wii is so popular, is because of the price, and ease of control. Most people that fit the Wii demographic, don't care about Blu-Ray, or the other PS3 features. Sorry for rambling a little, I'm sick, and I can't think completely straight right now.
@Pedro0792
Again, most wii users don't care at all about Blu-Ray, and besides that, the controller doesn't seem very accurate compared to the Wii controller according to Engadget.
@Paul J
That's also "pre-alpha" software. And they only referred to one game there.
@packy17
I brought that up, because you said this has "tracking that actually works", I pointed out that Engadget says that it doesn't, at least in its current status.
When it comes down to it, this will not have any bearing on people deciding to go with a PS3 over a Wii.
@Paul J
Seriously? I got downvoted? You PS3 fanboys are ridiculous sometimes.
@Pedro0792
I'm on your side on the whole, however the BD drive in the PS3 isn't equivalent to a standalone $200 model.
What a weird flashlight.
@TankerZ
At least make it look like one of those light up lightsabers and let us duke it out....
It looks like.... Im not even going to say it.....
*walks away laughing hysterically*
@SolidSnake Yeah, like that's not been mentioned before.
@SolidSnake
I'm afraid old comparison is old; it's been said a thousand times right from when it was first shown at E3 last year.
@Shokz
.... And thats why i didn't bring it up again. Oh, wait....
