TiVo returning to the UK thanks to partnership with Virgin Media
It looks like TiVo's freshly minted Premiere hardware will soon be setting sail eastwards as The Daily Telegraph is reporting Virgin Media's next generation set-top box will be built around it. Loyal readers of Engadget HD will already be aware that TiVo and Virgin hooked up last November and this latest news relates to the first hardware to be spawned from that relationship. According to TiVo CEO Tom Rogers, the Premiere will "heavily inspire the development work" going into Virgin's next TV appendage, which may or may not mean that the cable company will simply rebadge the well-received new boxes. What's assured though is much greater integration with online content, with search linking you out to Amazon, BBC's iPlayer, YouTube or good old standard broadcast channels. The whole thing's about unlimited choice, apparently, and should be showing up on the Queen's isles by the end of this year. We can wait, but we'd rather we didn't have to.

Anything that's faster than the current Scientific Atlanta V+ box will be welcome
@mojo8472 Agreed, the current boxes are a joke. Sky+ ftw. Unfortunately.
Oh Jesus yes. The fat, slow, crashing, noisy hunk of junk needs to go. And it'd be really cool to say "I've got Tivo"
@mojo8472
There is a new box by Samsung which is slowly making its way out into the wild. It is supposedly far better than the Scientific Atlanta one. Still will not stream recorded programs to other boxes though which I think is silly.
Dreambox ftw?
are the simply creating two divisions (EU division and US division) so that when one inevitably goes bankrupt they can offload all their debt to one division and close it out?
@willowtwf
I think they did that in the early 2000s when tivo left the UK, as Tivo never took off in uk
But...but...but...just a couple of days ago Engadget put a deathwatch out on TiVo.....
I have the Sky+HD box and it is fantastic I got it for free when we took the HD pack for 12 months. I now only watch the HD channels, they really are blu-ray quality.
@JJ452 Blu-Ray quality, eh?
Enjoying that lossy sound on Sky+ and the lack of full 1080p? :)
Compare your Sky+ HD channels on a decent 1080p TV set with 7.1 surround sound. You will notice the difference :).
"should be showing up on the Queen's isles by the end of this year"
As a proud Irishman, I must point out that she may have been born into owning 1 island, but please don't give her the other one too, we only got most of it back from her recently!
@ravenford
Excluding Ireland there are 135 inhabited islands in the British Isles.
@ravenford
Umm, there are a few (thousand) British Isles that aren't Ireland you know...
Although I severely doubt you can get Virgin Media in more than two of them.
@Chaplin62
@Malcolm
Granted, willingly.
But living in the north of Ireland and daily hearing BBC etc refer to the "British Isles" with regards to Ireland & British Mainland makes me somewhat sensitive towards being claimed again by a foreign monarch and nationality.
Somewhat like the aversion most British people seem to have towards being called "European" I guess.
No harm done :-)
@ravenford
Maybe you should stop watching BBC? Although most of the Republic watch it without having to pay the license fee. It is better than RTE after all.
@Chaplin62
lol, I would stop, aside from Doctor Who and the news thats all I watch! Unfortunately though in Northern Ireland we have to pay for BBC.
RTE's not that bad, at least they get new American shows day after, same as SKY, but without the subscription. Guess we get RTE in the north without paying their TV license though, so it balances out?
@ravenford Go on. I bet you watch 'Being Human' too.
@Chaplin62
LOL. no.... Buffy when I was younger, but not Being Human. Really cant understand how theres a big enough market for all these vampire shows / films...
bleedin' the wee tweenagers dry they are! ;-)
@ravenford
Fairy nuff.
Welcome back Tivo - you've been MIA for about 10 years here...
Just has virgin installed and the tech (douche) said they are releasing a HD box without the V+ recording feature for £30 installation fee.... We shal see!
The Virgin logo looks like a diaphram.
@VIRGINA
Or a tongue...
@VIRGINA
Or a pringle
"will simply rebadge the well-received new boxes"
Weird I have yet to read anyone who has really been positive about the new boxes. Even the people who are buying them including myself aren't exactly excited about it.
and should be showing up on the Queen's isles by the end of this year."
IN the Queen's Isles.
+ Queen's Isles is not a good description since plenty of the British Isles are not owned by the Queen, including Ireland, Mann.
@fourthletter
Ulster is! And is also technically Ireland.
God save the queen.
All EGHD podcast chatters now no longer have to listen to me whining (quite as much) about shite TV and DVR's in the UK.
We have the TiVo.. we're getting somewhere. Now we just need widerspread cable to use it on..
