A pair of
iPads was just revealed in the FCC's system in perfect synchrony with that little
pre-order sitch with which you may or may not already be familiar. Apple, of course, has a track record of timing its FCC filings perfectly so that virtually nothing is revealed before Cupertino wants it to be, and frankly, you're not going to get much here that you didn't already know -- the photographs (both external and internal) and the user manual are all still under confidentiality. Both units were tested for WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth, while one -- model number A1337 -- adds in GSM 850 / 1900 and UMTS 850 / 1900, so it appears that Apple has bundled all of its 3G and non-3G models into just two filings regardless of storage capacity. We caught A1337 flipping through an old issue of 2600, so for all we know, it socially engineered its way to FCC approval -- whatever it takes to make that late-April launch window, right?
My iPad can't come soon enough! My old Newton is getting pretty long in the tooth.

I hate apple just as much as everyone else, but you at least need to be fair to engadget
@blackactor
that is in now way even remotely correct.
Yet if it were, there sure are a lot of M$ fanbois that love to clog up good post with crappy commentary.
@blackactor
You can make your own website and post however many apple articles you want, or none at all. However, I'm trying to soak up all the Ipad news I can, so please go somewhere else and complain.
Let me guess. They gonna patent the square/rectangle shape too?
@cdf74dc9
That is relevant to what in the post?
@Yoda
Yes and no. Why not patent on your way to FCC. You know people gonna have problem when a similar shaped device came along.
Is it just me, or does the right bezel look a bit larger than the left? Or is that simply less-than-perfect artistry?
Though I can't imagine Apple producing a non-symmetrical device...
@ajsparx
You are experiencing one of the residual effects of the Reality Distortion Field. Relax your mind and let the Force flow through you. Less confused you will be.
Wait a second.
Specs page at Apple website (when it was introduced) said it will have quad-band GSM radios as well as 3G.
Now they are saying it will only be 850/1900MHz GSM only? That's a real bummer.
I wanted to give this as a present to my cousin's birthday. They don't have a 3G network where they live, so people are accoustomed to using EDGE on GSM network for their data.
If iPad won't have the other 2 missing frequency bands (900/1800MHz), like 99.9% of all phones do, they just lost a few sales. I understand about only having 2 frequencies for 3G network, but what's up with non quad-band? It's so common.
@XBRPhoto No worries, it'll be quadband -- it's very common for companies to only present test results to the FCC for bands it cares about, namely 850/1900. The others are simply left out of the filing.
@Chris Ziegler That's definitely a concern for me. I'm waiting till things sort out and what Softbank will offer for data, as well as a European solution. I'd love to have this connect in major metro areas, as well as offering a monthly data plan, or if I could just pick up that microSIM at a convenience store and charge it up with my credit card each month. That would be great.
It's quite expensive now with Softbank tied to the SIM rental, but I wonder if/what the solution will be for non-residents.
1337pad hahahaha! I wonder if they did that on purpose. Thats either REALLY cool of them or REALLY nerdy, but who says the two cant go hand in hand.... e.g. Ira Glass...
@CRA1G LOL fanboys downgrade you... but the truth is that MS is takin over every market this decade
90,000 iPads sold in first six hours according to http://mashable.com.
Face it haters, the iPad is already a home run!
@PastorTom
Just as i thought, congrats @ apple :)
@PastorTom 90,000? Is that all? I was under the impression that Steve Jobs could sell a 100,000 poo sandwiches in an hour.
The screen is off centre with the bezel.
@Pedro0792 I hope not. I wouldn't mind most markets having 3+ healthy competitors all trying to break 40% market share. That'd drive innovation like nobody's business (assuming they weren't all competing on price).
@CRA1G
No courier news yet dude, relax.
also "The iPad was designed from the ground up to be a content _consumption_ device, whereas the Courier is designed primarily to be a content _production_ device."
Touche!
Haha as much as I, alongside many other people, may hate on Apple/the iPad here, it's pretty funny giving it a model number like that! :D
A1337 = elite? Hahaha
Didn't Apple already use model A1137 with the iPod Nano 1st gens? Kind of odd that they would use the same model number with the iPad, unless the 1st gen Nanos are defunct models and have been removed from Apple's list of products.
@uzerzero
Nope. Google says that was A1137.
I can see ipad it may be a flop, have to wait N see
Don't let it drop or you will have to face the I-crack.
Oh yeah engadget, is this post one of the I-farts we do really not need to see???????????
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
How is this "breaking" news?
It's sad. If you read a iPad article, if you even mention the name of competition(although right now the market is clouded with a definite definition of a tablet) you're downranked. and if you do it on rival product articles(mention the iPad) you're downranked.
No one is safe from stating their opinion, because someone will not like it.
It should be illegal not to be able to pull the battery out in case of a potential "FIRE"!
Why do Apple suck so bad lately. I was all ready to buy a Mac until this iPad business.
@iPaul
Dude, if you don't want one, DON'T buy it!
You people act like this is life or death. chill
Have you ever watched an episode of Star Trek? They have every kind of computer you can imagine. The success of the iPad will not mean the downfall of other devices.
This device is perfect for people who NEED a portable IPS monitor and want a worry-free, virus and malware free internet browser. Other portable devices fulfill OTHER purposes.
I think the problem here is people don't understand that a new paradigm is being brought into the world here: a computer that is NOT all purpose.
Geez, if this 'debate' were with cars you guys would argue that the El Camino is the height of ingenuity and that those who buy Honda Civics are brainwashed idiots, because they can't haul a huge load of crap in the back.
@fluffyrobot the only one that needs to chill is you, dude...geez what a rant
I just want to know what's going on with the trademark infringement suit. It looks like Apple is just going to release their device and browbeat Fujitsu into giving up their trademark.
For everyone who hates the iPad let me tell you why it is a great device. It is going to create competition!! Already we are hearing about many companies who are designing tablet computers based off windows, android, and proprietary software. This is why the ipad is so great. It created this new type of product and got other companies to get off their ass to create something new as well.
