Google to stop censoring Chinese search results 'soon,' China warns of consequences
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is making headway with its plans to stop filtering search results in China. Quoting Eric Schmidt as saying that "something will happen soon," the latest report is that Google is engaged in negotiations with multiple government agencies in China, and the likeliest scenario at this point is that the search giant will remain in the People's Republic, though it may be in a slightly altered state. "There will be a way for Google to not pull out 100%," says a source familiar with the ongoing discussions, who expects that El Goog will find a patchwork arrangement by which it'll be able to maintain some parts of its business running while no longer adhering to China's censorship fiat. For its part, China is keeping up its tough posturing, with the latest statement from its IT ministry describing Google's plans as "unfriendly and irresponsible" and warning that the company will have to bear the consequences of its actions. What appears certain at this point, however, is that there'll be no going back to censored Google search results, which is a win in our books whatever the final outcome.

Google is a national hero. It's like the 4th branch of government. Rock on.
Google is a company, and if they want to keep operating in China, they must follow the laws in China, just like every other companies and that's all. just to remind some of you guys, knowing a lot of things doesn't mean knowing all the truth, and in any case, the news that you read and watch in the united state, is also censored or control by broadcasting centers in order to keep their license. so before you think that you have freedom and being informed with truth, you have to understand that your freedom goes like this "freedom". also in some researches on the internet, Chinese people are happier than us, but our broadcast center only show those Chinese kids that are suffering, check out some Chinese traveling programs, you will see how local people live.

Freedom of speech and individuality would suddenly make them worse off then they already are?
If they are 'happier than us" under communism, imagine how happy they would be when they can actually share their thoughts and opinions.
@Seff
well, you should really comment on the google thing first, otherwise, this is off topic. freedom of speech is an idea, not reality, and individuality? i think you have never been to China before. I travel there once in a while, and i found that people there are friendly and happy with the way they live and things that are running around them. under communism might be limited as a person and a group, but that is in North Korea, not China. i can't imagine why you would think that they can't think freely and share their opinions, they do it as much as, and as often as you are, so don't worry. lastly, if you are still so behind the time and have never walk outside of this land, you need to accept that things are getting much better, just you don't know it yet. i have no interest talking to you, because i don't think you have been China before, so no point to keep surprising you kid.
@Seff
Haha, I don't think you know what Communism is if you thing Chinese aren't 'sharing' thoughts.
They're just not voting. Kinda like how... say....Americans don't get to vote huge Health Insurance companies out of Washington?
