NPD: Xbox 360 wins US sales war in a downbeat February
The cosmos must clearly have approved of Microsoft's actions over this past month, as today we're hearing the Xbox 360 broke out of its competitive sales funk to claim the title of "month's best-selling console" ... for the first time in two years. Redmond's own Aaron Greenberg describes it as the best February in the console's history, with 422,000 units sold outshining the consistently popular Wii (397,900) and the resurgent PS3 (360,100 consoles shifted, which was a 30 percent improvement year-on-year). In spite of the happy campers in Redmond and Tokyo, the overall numbers for the games industry were down 15 percent on 2009's revenues, indicating our collective gaming appetite is starting to dry up. Good thing we've got all those motion-sensing accessories coming up to reignite our fire.

Zing?
Take the Xbox and the Wookie to my ship.
First of all, this isn't news. Second of all, the 360 lost worldwide sales for the month. If anybody even cared about the numbers, it's stupid to single out the US when its the ONLY location the 360 wins.. and make that the headline.
@Celeras You mean its stupid to look at the biggest market? Yeah, I guess so. Also, the TIE ratio for the 360 is the highest which means that its consoles are worth more, in the most valuable market. Again, stupid. Lastly, the PS2 could outsell the 360 in Japan in 2009 without any real support, it's not that the Asian market is unimportant, its just not as attainable for a western company. Good for the East in knowing how to support their own.
how come the xbox looks like that? new?
@ahchar
I definitely like THIS design better than their current design.
@think before you react
Really this ugly box looks better??
@ahchar It's a mock up. As in, something that was photo-shopped together and not real.
microsoft must be happy!
motion control for 360 soon?
@inertone
It's called Natal.
@inertone
Where the fuck have you been???
I think it may have something to do with the fact that the Wii is pretty stagnant. They don't have the whole "We can't keep these in stock so get one now" thing going for them. The Wii Fit is pretty old news too.
why use a concept, user made case image for a standard xbox article?
Your going to confuse people.
@scotchegg
DITTO!!!
@scotchegg
They confused me!
@scotchegg
Why did it confuse you? There's no new Xbox coming in few years and you know that is not Xbox "1".
@scotchegg it isnt a concept. its a real 360. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=696762
@Petro Actually, MS could quite possibly do a redsign of the 360 and/or put Xbox tech into other types of devices.
@timotim that's what their are doing... Windows Phone 7 Series will have Xbox Live :)
@timotim
But the topic is about "NPD: Xbox 360 wins US sales war in a downbeat February" and not something like "New 360 SKU announced!"
So it should be pretty clear that the image has modded case in it.
Well, duh... You can't find a PS3 in stock anywhere...
@Julio
Maybe not new, but there are storerooms overflowing with used ones.
@Julio I guess you haven't been in any stores around here... they have tons of them. Even some of the old (non-slim) models.
@deej where is this magical place? I work at best buy and we have none. Sometimes we may get a few 250gbs in.
and we have people coming in all the time telling us they can't find one anywhere in the dallas area.
@Julio : where do you live? Bestbuys Have tons of PS3s , Wiis, and xbox 360s all over.
@Rajivsri
You had 6 hours to read his 2 sentence comment, and still missed that he was in Dallas.
MSFT @ Were Back
there are still people buying the 360 ...I say put a blueray in it then see what then happens ... PS3 sales for sure because of the drive that well since HDTV Screen is becoming a common device in most households.. even my dad, who does not play, is considering to get one just because it is a cheap player solution..
@theswiss
you should start reading books, learn grammar etc.
@sinjinn I agree but punctuation and capitalization are important too Sin.
@sinjinn Normally I'd agree with you, but something tells me that English isn't "theswis's" first language.
@theswiss well I'm not sure if I really have to commend on posts from certain nerds, who're complaining about grammar on a site about tech stuff...but I would suggest to keep your "quality of grammar" high to ban every foreigner from posting on US sites.. then you won't have to worry about grammar mistakes by foreigners...
Wait the Xbox was not already winning in North America? I thought it did tho?
So what about in terms of worldwide sales then engadget? lol.
@guideXD
Nintendo Wii - 1,154,918
PlayStation 3 - 742,358
Xbox 360 - 614,696
From: http://playstrum.spruz.com/pt/PS3-Just-Passes-360-In-February-Results/blog.htm
And scroll to bottom if you wan't to see where they got their numbers,
@Petro
Thanks for that, i had a little look around but could not find anything and Joystiq's weekly results article was probably about 10 pages in considering all the articles they have made over the past few days...
Looks like its really just more bad news for Microsoft. Pretty much a normal month then 1. Nintendo 2. Playstation 3. Microsoft. I think third place for microsoft really needs to be stressed considering the mammoth extra sales Sony and Nintendo get from handheld gaming devices.
I think Sony have done a little bit worse considering their shortages but it's still pretty impressive for the Playstation to be selling so well at a higher price its just too bad they are not making even a small profit, they well and truly deserve it.
@Petro
That is according to a Playstation website. I like to get my info from a less bias place like http://www.vgchartz.com/ and they show the following as of the beginning of the year worldwide:
Wii: 68,630,000
360: 38,480,000
PS3: 32,780,000
I know how MSFT got one of its 360 sales...from my friend buying a new one because his old one with the RROD was out of warranty. Good sale Microsoft!
Sure it sells great... I've had to buy 3 of them since it's launch date due to them dying on me. You're welcome Micro$oft...
@pickleJar Why 3. The warranty hasn't doubled over yet. I bought my first on day one. The NXE killed it then I bought another.
@HektikLyfe - Well the 1st one was my fault.. it RROD. Then my wonderful friends suggested that i crack it open and put thermal paste on the stuff inside.. did not work.
2nd one was purchased at Wal-Mart and got an error that was something other than a RROD, had video degradation and eventually no video other than lines.. called M$ - told me fck off basically - The "extended" warranty from Wallymart sucks big floppy donkey dick. They replaced it 3 times.. still broken each time. This is 2 months i could not use it due to shipping it back and forth. Lemon law that they had sent me a check for my full purchase price. Said fuck this.. got a PS3 with it.
About that time Gears of War 2 and a few other games were coming out.. waited awhile.. and finally got a newer 360 from Best Buy w/ extended warranty. Knock on wood.. still running great.
I got great ventilation and no obstructions for airflow on my ps3, 360 and my 7.1 home theater. So hopefully it will last this time.
well done microsoft.i the ps3 is overtaking in total european sales this week, but looks like americans prefer the 360 slightly.
@sinjinn
Please show us where you read that? Because there is no european organisation that tracks sales...
@nieker
vgchartz
@sinjinn And when VgChartz starts to give the PS3 the lead, you know it's far in the lead.
360 may have won US sales in Feb, but another article says PS3 won worldwide sales in Feb....
hahah some faithful xbox fans.............buying xbox on faith of another faithfull xbox fan...........
I don't understand why people care. This only matters to people who don't own any console. Sales will affect prices. I already HAVE my Xbox and PS3...this doesn't affect me. They could become half price tomorrow, and it doesn't matter as they already have my money.
Why do you people insist on celebrating stuff that has zero affect on your day to day game play?
I can see this post in the future:
"Xbox 360 Wins US Motion Controller War"
@ckrames1234
Except that the 360 won't have a motion controller.
@Seff I consider Natal a motion controller, even though, technically, its a multisensing USB addon
