Verizon's Nexus One to be sold only through Google, have Sense UI (or not)
This doesn't come as much of a surprise, but Android Central seems to have obtained a screen shot from a deep, dark, top-secret Verizon system that indicated that the upcoming CDMA version of the Nexus One will be "available only through www.Google.com/Phones." That, of course, matches T-Mobile's strategy of quietly letting Google do its thing -- and Verizon's strategy of keeping its network "open" -- so you'll just have to remember to not line up at your local store at 8PM the night before the launch, otherwise you're going to come away very, very disappointed. What's a whole lot stranger, though, is a mention that it runs HTC's Sense UI, which means one of a few things: Google's allowing carriers and manufacturers to have their way with the Android builds sold directly through its own store, the Verizon-branded Nexus One is the Incredible, or the document is just sorely confused. The way we see it, there'd simply not be enough differentiation between the Nexus One and the Incredible for them to come to market as separate products if they were both running Sense -- and besides, isn't variety the spice of life?
Update: That was quick -- it seems Verizon has already updated its specs to remove the reference to Sense and change the URL from google.com/phones to google.com/phone -- no plural. Thanks, ninjalex76!

Funny the verizon store by my house kept insisting that it would only be sold in stores lol
It won't have Sense UI, it's a typo. The Google phone they believe represents what an Android phone should be is not going to have some 3rd party manufacturers custom GUI. What would that say to their other partners like Motorola, LG, Samsung, etc?
Anywho, the sooner big red customers can enjoy the N1 the better!
It will have the 1GHz Snapdragon which would mean possible fail on the Incredible.
Family Plan Plzzz
and i hope there is an option for vanilla android 2.1
@Alexpeegs
You can always 'turn off' Sense and run vanilla Android UI if want. Sense is simply a apk.
@ljm really i never knew that, I had a eris before and didn't know how to do that
@ljm
Sense features non standard android apps and is far more than an apk.
From my Hero I can recall a custom Messaging app, browser, media player, gallery app and things like Footprints and HTC Peep are also integrated into Sense.
I'm liking the Incredible a bit more over the N1, in terms of design. the Incredible will sell more phones if its sold in stores, simple as that. How many people want to buy a cell phone without first testing it, especially something involving a contract.
SenseUI can be turned off if I'm correct.
@LowSky If theres no family plan for this phone I'll have to get the incredible instead and overclock it and make it use all its RAM... all that 1gb :)
@ChazClout
Agreed, it's a multitude of apks...for all the widgets, dialer, contact list...etc.
But Rosie (HTC Sense) is the apk that displays the Sense UI
So to the OP, on your Eris if you went into Applications->Manage Application->HTC Sense and selected 'Clear defaults' when you exited and went to the home screen Android would have a pop up asking if you wanted to use Home or HTC Sense.
@ljm The home app can be turned off but this doesn't turn off the entire sense ui. I have a droid Eris and have tried several different ways and nothing completely removes the sense ui.
@forHim247
Yeah to get it completely off you'll need to root and remove all the Sense UI apk's if you want it completely stock looking. On my Hero when you use the Home Launcher things like the dialer, lock screen, notification bar all keeps the Sense look, but you can not use any of the HTC widgets...but deleting things like HtcContacts, HTCLockScreen, etc apks will force it to use the stock stuff.
@Alexpeegs
Yes. I have a family plan and really want the Nexus 1. I dont want to get stuck with the tacky ugly HTC Incredible. Plus the Nexus 1 is the flagship phone for Goods so it will get updates faster.
I have been waiting for this phone on this carrier by this manufacturer for years. I can't believe how close I am to owning my dream gadget!
@Blackfeather
..and then getting disappointed when the Supersonic hits... :P
@Blackfeather
Don't get me wrong.. N1 is a very cool phone.
But I would not call it a "super phone" like google has dubbed it..
@Almo
supersonic won't hit for a while and it will just have a bigger screen
I prefer a more pocketable device but that just my opinion
@Almo
Sprint is not going to cut it for me in NY. No hint of Verizon or AT&T carrying the supersonic, or did I miss something...?
@Blackfeather -- I just advise you (and everyone interested) to read through some of the threads on the Google support board for the N1 before you leap -- just so you know what you're getting into, with both the phone and the "deal w/HTC on all issues" service model. (sounds like you may have already done your homework, though, which is great...)
@mpv Verizon does much more rigerous testing then t-mobile. The vzw version wont have the same issues
To the people complaining about having to buy it through google.com. You do have to realize that what Google wants to do with the mobile industry is something that we're not use to. We're used to buying a phone through a carrier, getting tied into a contract and getting the phone cheap. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Google is trying to get us away from subsidized pricing. I have a great family plan and it sucks that i couldn't get the phone for cheaper than 530 but oh well. If your able to get exclusivity of phones away from carriers, what do carriers have to do? simple, better coverage and more competitive pricing.
@Edobe
issues? i'm assuming you mean the 3g problem? that didn't have anything to do with t-mobile. It was a software problem; i had bad 3g and with the OTA it was fixed.
@haan -- which is nice; except they left us to deal w/HTC on all device issues, which *sucked*. At least a carrier depends on your business on a month-to-month basis, and so has an incentive to provide decent customer support on the devices they (re-)sell to their customers (not that their support is always stellar, of course... but at least the incentive is there; HTC has no such incentive, and it shows).
I'm not here to grind an axe, by the way -- I was able to return the device I bought, and I'm out of the N1 game (and hold no real grudge against HTC; I'm sure other phone manufacturers are just as bad). Just saying -- anyone considering the pros and cons of going the "straight from Google" route should read through that thread a bit and get a sense of what people have dealt with on the customer service front. I wouldn't go that route again, personally -- but that's just me.
@haan exactly my point. That "software issue" should have been caught in testing. Those types of issues will not make it past verizons's tests.
@Edobe The phone has hardware issues, too.
@Almo
The only disappoint that will arise when the Supersonic hits is the fact that it will land on Sprint.
What about about the new every two credit...??? Am I going to get screwed with that and have to shell out a lot more cash...??? Disappointing.
@JJJ
You should be able to get this phone for the upgrade price even if it's sold through Google. They're doing the same thing for T-mobile customers. Existing T-mobile customers that are 2 years into their contract get it for the low price of $179, I'm assuming it will be the same for Verizon customers.
@dracoaffectus
The upgrade price (for existing subscribers) is actually (unfortunately) $279. Only new customers are eligible for the $179 price.
@Dynamic3
what's the offer for someone who is out of contract? I'll assume as they are still a subscriber it's $279
@denary
Correct out of contract, but on month to month with T-Mobile still gets you $279 price for the N1 :(
Incredible indeed, incredibly lame. Just get an iPhone, they are much better.
@Enorgasm
EPIC FAIL
@Enorgasm
Did you just say the iPhone was "much" better than the Nexus One? Yeah I can think of a dozen ways how this is not true.
@TareG
no, he's right. i hear the new ones can even record video!
@dantzig
Wow what a way better phone...sarcasm
I doubt this is the Incredible, because the spec for this the N1 is a 5 megapixel camera, while the leaked specs for the Incredible is a 5mp camera.
@Patlex
so the little "m" means "micropixels" then?
@Blackfeather
No it means MEGApixel he he...
Now.. if we could only get the release date nailed down.
Gah, I hate this online only business that's going on. Call me old school but I enjoy the feel of going down to the store, messing around with the phone, and carrying it home in the bag with all of the accessories just itching to rip the bag open. I guess I'll be getting the incredible.
Google should just sign a deal for 3g for the Nexus and charge $30 for 'unlimited + VOIP/Google Voice" like how Apple is doing the iPad.
Are there major screen issues with the N1? Google says it's not made for your pocket.. So I may just wait for the Incredible-
@boomer7638
I saw somewhere that there was bug with touch hardware that was causing inverted multi touch simulations on the nexus. Not sure if they patched it.
@ComeShot
The response from Google implies that a software fix might not be possible. Though it also remains to be seen whether the version that Verizon is getting will have this same flaw.
The fact that there are people here commenting in the belief that this is true is hi-la-rious! There isn't any chance in hell that Google is going to sell the N1 with Sense or that Verizon will sell them in store. What are my sources? Common damn sense. Google has made it perfectly clear that they are going to sell "their" phones themselves and the HTC isn't about to slap sense on someone else's phone, even though they do manufacture the N1, as this could lead to cannibalization of the sales of it's own phones.
Hmmm... Since there's so little information to go on, I'm inclined to think that whoever wrote up this page is clueless on Sense vs Android.
@beatsandmelody
Also, look at the URL. Who unnecessarily capitalizes letters in links? Noobs and the technologically inept.
OR NOT!
Google is not going to sell HTC apps.
The Nexus One with Sense UI is the Desire ... Android is enough complicated this way.
