Wacom Cintiq 21UX hands-on
It's almost too much to take in all at once. Sure, the $1,999 Cintiq 21UX pen display is priced out of reach for most of us mere mortals who "don't draw good," but the pure lustworthiness of this unit sure makes us try to forget that inconvenient fact. The expanded movability of Wacom's latest is commendable, the pen input is naturally great, the screen is beautiful, and even those new rear-mounted touchpads seem helpful. It would take someone much more familiar with professional draw-ist-ing to really speak to the more specific merits of the 21UX, but from a mere standpoint of inspiring irrational desire in our hearts, Wacom seems to have done a pretty good job this time out. Check out a video of the screen in action after the break.

That is just impressive in every way. I know designers everywhere need to clean up.
I want one so bad. I love my Wacom tablet, but the disconnect between looking at the monitor and drawing on the pad drives me crazy. I was hoping that the price of the older revisions of these things would come down as newer models released, but no such luck. :(
@Patton i always wondered why wacom has no competitors...
especially in the cintiq series.
@Patton The 12" Cintiq is pretty good if you're on a limited budget. But it's not very accurate around the edges.
A side effect that nobody speaks about though is that with a Cintiq you will be looking down on your hands a lot, putting more stress on your shoulders than when looking forward on a computer screen. So it's very important to take breaks and move about now and then to keep in good shape.
@Patton There's a video of an Audi designer and he's designing a car (A1?) and to see him work on this Wacom is truly amazing considering it's a monitor touchscreen with a pen input. It on my dream list as well.
lol, I havent seen a vista tablet in AGES
@commenter7 It's not a vista tablet, it's essentially an external display that accepts pressure-sensitive pen input. It's still a tablet, but it's not a computer - you can use it on PC or Mac.
Aren't these what Bungie use for the facial design/animation in Reach?
@archkron most likely, mix that with Autodesk Mudbox or similar software and you can do it all way that Cintiq.
Damn, they have the balls to use Vista and Illustrator. They're rebels.
@daytripper Illustrator always ran fine for me on Vista.
Will there be a post when it's available to preorder?
@n8equalsd
It's available now...no pre-order neccessary.
@n8equalsd,....and another reminder post too. lol
As an aspiring Industrial Designer, I think I speak for the entire industry when I say, I just jizzed myself.
@jordanbiffle
what about the courier? wouldn't it be worth the wait for the functionality and intuitiveness?
@masta vaan
I'm on the fence about courier. I loved the first concept videos of it, but the new ones make the device look not so good. Plus its only a concept video and no working prototype has been spotted yet so as far as intuitiveness goes ???. Plus, I've used a pogo sketch pen and Sketchbook/Brushes on my iPhone and had a pretty good designing experience, which is why I preordered an iPad.
@masta vaan I'm guessing something like this would be preferable because its so much bigger, and most likely has better pen based input tech. That is Wacom's bread and butter, after all.
Engadget, it's not hands on, but fingers on.
@Dood
pens on.
Vista D:
I WANT ONE. That is so much better than my sketch pad.
Paul Miller is really admiring those back wheels on that thing.
*tries to suppress erection*
*fails*
I WANT THIS THING SO BAD, ID DO ANYTHING TO OWN ONE I TELL YA, ANYTHING! Anybody know if this is USB 3.0?
@shoxite
well its only 2000$ if you want one... and probably no usb 3.0, because this is less powerful than a desktop
@shoxite
MOAR CAPS PLZ
Go figure. Not even two months after buying the previous model and this one comes out ...
its worth every penny!
Well, it's nice, but if it's out of your budget why not get a convertible tablet laptop? Much cheaper and you can still draw right on the screen. :-)
@SimonRichards Wacom has much better pen sensitivity than a regular resistive touchscreen. This particular Cintiq has 2,048 pressure levels with a +-60% tilt range. And now I can't stop drooling.
@BLEH is my middle name
I am aware of the superiority of wacom tablets above resistive panels...
I am writing this on an asus r1f, which has an active wacom panel with 256 pressure levels, which has to be plenty for most people.
@SimonRichards Plenty for most people but not those who make their living from using a tablet such as this.
Engadget Giveaway, now! Now I say!
hmm,
my home made 15" tablet needs an upgrade...
could make one of these for about £300 tops :)
I need a tablet that can run photoshop and lets me draw as though i'm using pencil and paper. But I need it to be cheaper than $2000.
@EDay I Think this may be what you're looking for.
http://www.axiotron.com
@Camperton No bad at all. Too bad it's a Mac, and still a bit pricey, though I know I probably won't find what I want for much less.
I can't draw for shit but damm, who wouldn't want this baby on his desk!
I still don't know why they can't slap a processor in this thing, shrink it a bit and have the best tablet on the market. I'd pay 3000$ for that.
I love my Intuos3 tablet but how I would love one of these on my desk.
Oh sweet God I want one. Or five. Actually, I want enough to build a rudimentary den, and I'll sit in it all day and draw stuff on one.
i love my Intuos3 and so badly want a Cintiq but, to be honest, i think i'll wait until Wacom releases a large-scale widescreen aspect ratio model. that 12" model won't cut it and if i'm gonna be replacing my 27" (or supplementing, when i upgrade from my 13" MacBook), i'd like to avoid the 4:3.
They used to offer a widescreen model. I know, I have one (Cintiq 20 WSX). Why they dropped it, I don't know. It's also got scrolling touchpads on the back of the display, albeit with out the level of customization this new model sports.
Engadget uploads the worst videos... audio completely sucks and the cam quality is balls!
What are they wasting their money on? Engadget should be uploading top notch media
@hit9ent drugs.
@hit9ent
Hookers.
I would buy this so much...if I can actually draw.
If you're sketching use Sketchbook Pro 2010, not Photoshop.
This is an Engadget giveaway...right?
