Dell introduces $339 G2410H 24-inch 1080p LCD monitor, we go hands-on
Just over a year ago, Dell pushed out its latest and greatest 24-incher, the energy-sipping G2410. Today, the Round Rock powerhouse has introduced that very unit's successor (complete with a height adjustable stand), the G2410H. Still sized at 24-inches, this 1080p LCD monitor sports a variety of eco-modes, 5 millisecond response time, 160-degree (horizontal) / 170-degree (vertical) viewing angles, a native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, ambient light sensor, 250 nits of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and DVI / VGA inputs. We've had one in-house for around a week now, and for $339, it's not a bad replacement to that 21-inch CRT that's still weighing heavily on your desk. It's not as sharp and brilliant as the (admittedly more expensive) UltraSharp U2711, but it was certainly clear enough for the average home user. It's shipping now if you just can't resist.

In before someone bitches about TN panel.
@Leindurstit What about if I bitch about the resolution? So many 24" screens have dropped to 1920x1080 instead of the nicer 1920x1200.
@scoobydooby That too. Damn. Foiled again.
@scoobydooby You'll have to suck on it unfortunately - panel manufacturers are trying to standardise on 16:9 to consolidate their assembly lines and reduce costs.
@Leindurstit
Totally using your post to stay at the top. Where's that Android App Engadget? :'( I want it! i want it! i want it!!
*lays on the floor screaming and causing a scene*
@scoobydooby
Nicer but awkward for doing work intended for 1080p, if you want to switch to a preview.
Hopefully it has a easy button for punching up the brightness when the ambient sensor gets over zealous.
@Cy Starkman
Well if you have 1920x1080 + 1920x1200 then it will be weird, but If you have a single 1920x1200 or a dual set up then it doesn't really changes anything in term of resolution. Why people settle for less I can not answer that.
@scoobydooby I'm with you. I just got a 23" 1080p at work that replaced a 1600X1200 tube and going from 24" X1200 at home I can say it sucks. I didn't think it would be that bad but it is really inferior.
@Leindurstit
Why shouldn't we bitch when a company tries to push an inferior technology on ignorant consumers?
@r3loaded
Yeah, I have this feeling for the long time. Unfortunatelly, the 16:9 resolution is only good for TV's. And personally, I do not want to have a TV resolution for my PC monitor and for my laptop. 19:10 is perfect for the PC monitor and 4:3 is really good for the laptop.
I'll bitch about *both* the TN panel and 1920x1080 resolution!
@MThorne
You can't really bitch about TN this time, Engadget even mentioned and linked the U2711 for the IPS lovers, that said they definitely should make a cheaper 24" version for the rest of us
@JeremyBenthem
theres a 22 inch, the 2209WA, with IPS. I have one, its amazing
@MThorne What panel and resolution would you expect at this price?
@JeremyBenthem The cheaper version of the U2711 is the U2410, and it was out way before the U2711. The U2410 is also a H-IPS panel, 1900x1200, with HDMI, Displayport, 2 DVI, VGA, Component and Composite connections. It's well regarded, I have I know, it's great.
i'll bitch about the lack of hdmi too
@airbag888
Can't you just use an adapter? Attach it to the monitor and it will be like it has a HDMI port.
@airbag888
You do realize HDMI = DVI+Sound right? and since this monitor has no speakers built in, there is no benefit over DVI?
@daedone
I'm talking about plugin in a ps3 or other hdmi devices
I'll bitch about the price. Why is this $340?
It has a slightly above average stand. Otherwise, identical specs as your $200 Acer/LG/BenQ option (that probably comes with HDMI at least), despite having WLED. I don't see the sense in paying $140 premium up front to go from $12/yr in energy costs to $6/yr
@Akhen - Although I agree that this seems priced pretty high, I also would definitely pay a premium for LED.
But here's why I won't buy this model: no HDMI.
@MRCUR
You would pay a premium for a different type of light that makes absolutely no difference in performance?
lol.
@grumbles There should be power savings at least, and environment considerations (no mercury in LED).
@grumbles - I much prefer the light of LED. I hate it when it takes time for a monitor to warm up.
@Akhen I agree, I have a BenQ 24" 1080p LCD with DVI/HDMI/VGA that cost $199 AUD delivered - about $182 USD. There are even cheaper ones out now.
Strangely enough - this model (G2410H) is nearly identical to a BenQ 24" 1080p which is the G2410HD - http://www.benq.com/products/LCD/?product=1453&page=specifications . I know Qisda (BenQ's manufacturing arm) make a lot of Dell monitors, but this is just getting a little too similar.
No HDMI? :(
@pika2000 It's about time VGA died and DVI & HDMI (&/or Displayport) was standard on all monitors.
@pika2000 What baffles me is Dell's lower-end line, such as the ST2310 (http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=bsd&cs=cabsdt1&sku=320-8299) has HDMI but this doesn't. I believe there is even a 24" ST because I bought a couple for work, but I can't find it on Dell's site anymore.
Why the fuck doesn't this thing have HDMI!?!?
Come on Dell, way to be lazy.
I will note that I have no problem with the rez...
hum... looks the same in term of standard as every 24" monitor. I'm really waintin' for a low cost 2650 x 1600 and I'm bored since 2 years :(
For this price, i can get an IPS 23" NEC EA231WMI-BK! Who wants that stupid TN screen!
2 hours on the phone with Dell last night. 4 supervisors. Never buying a fucking Dell again.
This might be off topic, but instead of that, I would get the
Acer S243HL. LED backlighting, 1080p, 2ms, etc.. Costs a little cheaper too. :O
@Prevacator
Why? mine is 16:10 and I don't see the point other than reading 2 pages of a pdf at the same time in full screen, which is ridiculous.
1920x1200. I'm never gonna downgrade. I hate this trend. :(
I'll sit happily with by two 23" Samsungs running at 2048 x 1152 each, for a total of 4096 x 1152.
Why would I get something bigger with less resolution? 20 inchers should be 1920 x 1080, 22" and 23" should be 2048 x 1152, and 24" should be the next step up.
Not to mention that my samsungs have better color and contrast and viewing angles than any other TN panel I have seen.
The main reason you'd want 1080p is if your using something like a gaming console on it, but this has no HDMI or Component import so I fail to see the reason behind their choice.
When the heck are they coming out with a new 30" screen??
The 3007 was relatively well accepted for 2006/2007 technology and price and the 3008 wasn't very well accepted. I figure they took 2009 to get their act together but this is 2010 and our choice is a 3 year old screen or a 2 year old model that wasn't a hit.
@boe when they can fit 3840x2160 on one, which should be in about 9 months time
@(Unverified) That seems impressive. You could be yankin my chain but if they could do what you are suggesting perhaps we'll finally see 36" screens! I'd definitely pay more for a 36" if it had a quality display. I know plenty of people who use TV's as displays but the picture quality just isn't very good compared to a computer screen for computer work. Great for games though.
@boe I doubt we'll see 36" screens, even 30" is pushing it as a monitor, we might see 34" since 32 and 37" tv's are becoming increasingly rare.
@devilfriend 640K is enough for anybody
@devilfriend
I actually do that quite a bit for some of my work on my master's degree. When you have to compare two documents extensively, that's the way to do it.
28 inch monitor for $20 less:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254043&cm_re=hanns_g-_-24-254-043-_-Product
I have one.
Yes, it owns.
28 inches and only 1920x1200? C'mon now.
@einhanderkiller still it's cheap as heck(although admittedly that's due to them making the panels themselves), has 2x hdmi's and you can use it as a small TV as well.
That's because it IS a small TV being sold to the underinformed as a PC monitor.
@psyopper
And that's why it's awesome ;)
I have it connected to my PC, my Xbox 360, and my cable box.
BTW I misspoke. It's not $20 cheaper; it's $30 cheaper.
@psyopper and that's why it has a 16:10 res?
I like my g2410 much better. Give us back the LED backlight. Hopefully I can pick up another one really cheap somewhere now that they discontinued it.
