Origin PC offers overclocked 4.3GHz Core i7-980X Extreme Edition on Genesis desktop
You know what's better than a stock 3.33GHz Core i7-980X Extreme Edition CPU? Not much, but we're guessing that a 4.3GHz overclocked version of the same chip just might be. If you're thinking the same, and you've got $1,044 to spare in order to find out, upstart gaming rig maker Origin PC has the means to get it to you. The outfit's Genesis desktop can now be ordered with Intel's freshest slab of silicon for $895, or you can snag an extra gigahertz for another $149. We know you'll make the right call.

@SonofUgly
Precisely
I just set up a configuration that costs twice as much as my car. Sweet.
Sorry you guys, but AMD has a Phenom II x4 Quad core cpu clocked at 3.4 GHz for $700 less than the yop of the line 3.33GHz Intel i7. And when that's overclocked, its gets in beast mode.
So why would you buy a lower speced i7 for $700 than the Phenom II x4?
IDK, but people seem to do it. Me, I'm sticking AMD
@Drybones5 Because no one wants to be like you, be with AMD and feel so lonely they need to Spam Intel articles. Have you not found anything better to do with all that AMD goodness than try to subconsciously justify your decision-making by telling everyone else what bad decisions they are about to make? I feel sorry for you.
@Drybones5
Of course AMD is cheaper. If it was more expensive than Intel chips then they would be dead long ago.
@Drybones5
Amd is not comparable to intel benchmark wise a the same clock speeds. They never have been, right now intel is better, a few years ago with the athlon 64x2 the amd chips were much more powerful at lower clock speeds than intel.
@Drybones5 - I happen to have that exact AMD CPU you speak of. Yes, it's quite a bit cheaper than Intel's i7 CPUs, but have you seen the performance comparison? I didn't buy AMD's highest end CPU expecting it to beat or even match the i7's - I suggest you take a look at some performance charts, you'll notice the massive gaps between the 965 and the higher i7s - like the one this post is about.
@Drybones5
Before i go on too far, I run my system on an AMD 945 deneb and its pretty sweet and much cheaper than intel. On the same lines however... Intel's i7 processors are in a whole new ballgame than AMD. They use less power at peak, and grossly less power at idle. They offer hyperthreading on each core of the cpu, they automatically overclock themselves if your computer needs a temporary boost, and they handle HD better than AMD.
I love my AMD and that I paid so little for it off Newegg, but Intel's i7 is worth the money for the difference it offers to users who need the most powerful rig out there.
being 3Ghz is not the only thing to check for on a processor.
@Drybones5
It's like you have no idea what processor architecture is. Clock for Clock Intel's Core i-series is hugely more powerful than the Phenom line. A 2.6GHz i7 can outperform in every situation a 3.4GHz Phenom.
@Prevacator
What's your proof on this?
@Drybones5
Here's one
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-phenom-ii,2119.html
But if you Google "i7 980x vs Phenom" you'll quickly see that you're wrong. Besides, this post is referring to the 6 core variant and even if you throw all the science out of the window, 6 is still greater than 4 at any speed.
@Drybones5
Benchmarks. Everywhere. Ever heard of Anandtech? Or even just facts?
It's a proven fact there is no AMD equivalent to the i7 in terms of processing power. Not until Thuban comes out, and by then Intel will have Sandy Bridge. You'd have to be a blatantly ignorant fanboi to not realize how much better the i7 is over the Phenom.
@Drybones5 - You're seriously trying to compare the 965 to the i7s? You're crazy dude.
Is there a point to this? Have you found anything that maxes out an i7?
Games don't. Graphics cards are faster at video conversion. Doubt any of you do CAD.
@DougieBear
I do CAD work. But for a gaming boutique machine like this, it's more about the ePeen.
@Prevacator
Sandy Bridge is speculated to be released in 2011. Thuban is speculated to be released this April.
@DougieBear
video conversion? What do you mean?
@AndroFan
I set up a config 1/6 of what my car costs.

@Prevacator
can you please explain for average guys like us as to what you meant by "A 2.6GHz i7 can outperform in every situation a 3.4GHz Phenom." so we can be enlightened ? Thanks
What are they doing to make this same cpu overclocked? Is it something that you can just do on your own? Plus a better fan and power supply?
@dds1043
except when they do it it's still covered under warranty
@Mentat
Except if you do it yourself it's also covered under warranty.
@dds1043 - Yes, you could overclock it on your own. Probably wouldn't want to do that, especially to the extent they're doing so, though since you'd instantly void the warranty.
@MRCUR You shouldn't be voiding warranty though. It's an Extreme Edition Processor, which allows for overclocking without voiding warranty.
@dds1043
yea, last i checked, the extreme editions had overclocking covered under the warranty.
@Sneakz - Ah, well how nice of Intel. Thanks for the info guys!
@MRCUR
could someone please tell me as to how you go about overclocking your processor ? Thanks
@techGURUS This article is a few years old now, but the general principles should be pretty much the same.
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/overclock_your_pc
Also, many motherboard makers have Windows based OCing utilities that can make the process much easier than poking around your BIOS. Of course, be careful and know that each CPU will overclock differently and you probably won't get the same results as other people.
if you were gettting it, the right call would be to do the OC yourself and not pay extra for it.
@fel and screw it up royally?
$150 for that much overclock is not a bad deal. Only catch seems to be you need to also get the liquid cooling that will cost a lot more than regular fan. But still, you wouldn't want to push your CPU that high without good cooling, right?
@poached
youd have to go out of your way to do any damage.
@SonofUgly *jizzes in pants* *looks for wallet* * finds wallet in fetal position behind couch saying to himself "i can do it, i can do it"* *loses hope*
I JUST CAME.
That is all.
@Lando Calrissian
You're not the only one. "Cream the competition" eh?
@Lando Calrissian Did anybody else get a disturbing picture in their mind when they saw that comment and Lando's picture?
@Lando Calrissian THAT picture makes me feel wrong. =[
Seriously, I know games are fun, even awesome...but is there ever a time when spending $1,044 on just the processor for your gaming computer is ever justified?!? I mean you could get one of every console and some games for that much.
@yulebellow - Good point. But I mean, it's 4.3GHz! That's a lot of GHz's.
@yulebellow and continue to kill pc gaming? too much publisher are trying to tell us that console is the best way of gaming... i'm not sure about that, have you ever played starcraft 64? ;)
but it also true that the cost of a pc is much higher than a console... but it dosen't do only gaming, for myself it would be used for rendering liquid and fume particles for example.
@yulebellow The bragging rights are included in the price.
@Exbloder
...so is the rubber woman. :P
@yulebellow
it does a lot more than gaming you know...
it's only the best consumer processor available right?
@yulebellow
But what if you wanted to play 8 separate instances of Crysis on 24 monitors? I NEED to do that all the time!
@JW
I think you NEED to get out of the basement ;-)
All the jizz from everyone that came over this can fill a pool.
@abedinthehouse
enough with the jizz, get back to the meat. XD
My wallet in my pockets just lit on fire.
Steve Jobs can afford this..
What about the Average overclocked Corei7? doesn't it come close to 4ghz overclocked with a good cpu cooler?
