Origin PC offers overclocked 4.3GHz Core i7-980X Extreme Edition on Genesis desktop
You know what's better than a stock 3.33GHz Core i7-980X Extreme Edition CPU? Not much, but we're guessing that a 4.3GHz overclocked version of the same chip just might be. If you're thinking the same, and you've got $1,044 to spare in order to find out, upstart gaming rig maker Origin PC has the means to get it to you. The outfit's Genesis desktop can now be ordered with Intel's freshest slab of silicon for $895, or you can snag an extra gigahertz for another $149. We know you'll make the right call.

@Hydra
except this fucker is 32nm, has 6 cores, and is an extreme edition CPU (unlocked multi).
For the $3600 they want for the base config with this processor, I'd wait for the new mac pro. However, for those who need single threaded performance, this will be hard to beat. I wonder what their warranty exchange rate will be....
@Bill Brasky - I guarantee you 100% you'll pay more for a Mac Pro.
You could spend 1/8th of that money on a pretty good gaming machine every year or two and be set on gaming computers for at least ten years, and on the third or fourth year have something better than whats in the source link.

@Mentat
He's right. Go for something less than that and you'll find really good things. I mean the ATi 48xx's were lower spec and MUCH lower costs but they were good.
people complaining already about 499$, ok and countless other stuff but 1044$ news? drama!
@The Geek How did your wallet end up in a fetal positon?
There's no way someone can be in the market for a i7-980X and not know how to overclock or have substantial knowledge about custom rigs so... this is going to sell how? Unless you're some millionaire's kid... but that's beside the point.
@DeFo
The other high end gaming shops seem to be successful at it, so why not Origin? This may mean stiffer price competition and even better warranties in the end.
mommy, i want that for christmas
@vanwazltoff
It will be obsolete by Christmas!
when can we get netbooks with these specs???
@JakeInDC When pc manufactures let them go above 1.6ghz for netbooks.
They want to keep making the same amount of money and if smaller, cheaper,more powerful cpus are made then they will sell the same amount, but for less and in turn lose money they could be getting selling bigger and more expensive cpus that run at the same speed.
... and I remember my blisteringly fast IBM PC-XT (about 1980): i8086 overclocked (to 7 MHz from 4.7MHz), i8087 math co-processor, i80186 (UNIX and Ada native) auxiliary processor board, high resolution COLOR card and monitor (1024x1024), two 5MB hard drives, reel-to-reel tape drive, extender chassis, 1200 Baud modem... There was no such thing as "gaming" then; I was writing code. It was some time before I spent more for a car!
Makes me wish I had that much extra money to spend on a computer just so I can say my computer has a 4.33 GHz CPU
@dracoaffectus
If you want to just say that, then go pick up a use P4 northwood...those came out many years ago and could easily overclock to over 4Ghz.
Yes, you will be able to say you have a 4.x Ghz CPU, but the performance will be about, oooh, 10X less than this core i7.
@The Geek & engadget You're wallet will need more than $895 to find out, this is the cost of the upgrade from an i7, which isn't in their for free or by itself. As far as I can tell, the cheapest system with the 908 chip without overclocking goes for $2,973. So, an extra $895, an extra $2,973...potato, potato.
Ooooohhhh this is a nice. I would absolutely LOVE to have the 980x in ANY form. For now I'll stick with my AMD 965 at 3.4GHz, maybe push it to 4GHz eventually.
Microsoft Word would run like a charm on this.
@Ignition1 - Hahaha, that gets an uprank from me.
@Ignition1
and iTunes still would crash
@FCells - "and iTunes still would crash"
lmao! I wish your comment could reach "epically ranked".

@Plazmic Flame
god damn this comment system....
All you that put people down that don't build their own system are kind of stuck up and narrow minded. Ever think of handicapped people that don't have precise motor skills, have partial eye sight just to name a few, There are lots of reasons to get pre built systems, and I think it is cool that you can build your own, but it isnt a reason to put others down because they have a different life than you.
@sharard11
All that and the best example you can come up with is "Think of the handicapped people"? Really? I can think of many reasons people will buy a prebuilt (only have to contact one company for warranty/tech support, don't have the time, etc), and a physical disability is the only one you can come up with? Hell, I know a guy with Parkinson's that bought the parts off Newegg and then payed one of my friends $20 to put it together for him. Now, I'm not saying it's right to make fun of them, I'm just saying you're just as bad if not worse for singling them out.
@freakdiablo
tru dat
@SonofUgly
We should sue the editor for false advertising.
By far the worse article I've seen in a while as far as pricing is concerned.
That being said...holy Zeus!
(He's the only one with enough juice to power this thing!)
Decent :D!
I think the bigger headline should be the $1000+ price tag!!!
4.3ghz is nothing. i can hit that with my i7 920 d0 @ 21x, 1.35v. on air.
@kylesonfire
And this has two more cores...
Besides, Anand over at Anandtech was able to reach 4GHz on the stock cooler that comes with i7 980x.
The Core i7-980X. Processing viruses at the speed of light. (It's a joke people).
bah. It's no ipad. all those cores and it doesn't even run iLife? pass.
@wickersty
1Ghz and it can't even multitask? pass.

i just had this memory about Dell XPS laptops... I really miss them...:(
they were so bad ass.
Weird, I have my i7-920 D0 overclocked to 4.2ghz on air. Not much to gloat about for the extreme if ya ask me. And I only paid $120 for mine. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_OlPBM6zIJPY/Sw47i9tpYHI/AAAAAAAAABk/gwcwN4Hum4Q/s1440/linx.jpg
And this is one of the reasons why I miss PC's, having gone Mac =\
Genesis huh.... I hope Sonic the Hedgehog knows that it doesn't come with chili dogs...
