Wii Fit push up bars make sense, but this one isn't worth dollars
Push-up bars for the Wii Balance Board? Now that sounds like a fantastic idea -- just the thing broad-shouldered individuals need to play Wii Fit without backstrain. Too bad this particular set of bars isn't worth the plastic it's printed from. The latest and greatest from the minds in the chintzy plastic peripheral industry, the $25 CTA Digital Wii Push Up Bar is held in place by only your weight and a few foam strips without reinforcement of any kind, meaning it could detach itself with any significant exertion. The only good that comes out of all this is an embarrassing video demonstration after the break, which features a pair of smiling humans pretending to have fun with the contraption. QVC, eat your heart out.

I don't want one. What's wrong with regular non electronic watched push-ups?
I like how he refers to CTA as a "they" and says "Hi, I'm Doug. Today we're checking out the Push-up Bar for the Wii Fit . . . "
. . . as if he was an objective gadget reviewer, as opposed to an actor hired by CTA. Please, CTA, continue to insult our intelligence some more!
@Smart People Play Tuba
Whoops. Misquoted him. I meant to say:
"I'm Doug. Today we're checking out CTA Digital's ---AWESOME---Push-up Bar . . . "
@Smart People Play Tuba
"I was thinking about putting them in this position so that way I could work the inside of my... (looks at cue card) my triceps"
@hollowpoint
what about wii fit bush up bras?
@hollowpoint worst infomercial ever
"held in place by only your weight and a few foam strips without reinforcement of any kind"
well thats about 60 to 100kg of body weight in reinforcement. I really don't see what's engadgets problem here.
@Xstream
I agree. I dont see how it would slip out of place. It looks like it fits over the board pretty securely
@Xstream maybe the editors aren't really the hands-on type for this gadget? ;)
@Xstream agreed.
how would it lift off? do your feet leave the ground when gravity's not looking? why would there be any vertical lift?
@roosta
when it was the girl's turn and she moved her right leg over her left and lifted her arm... that puts all that pressure on one side of the thing. you can tell she was being /very/ careful when she did that, so it didn't flip on her.
@Xstream You've never picked yourself up by pushing down? Freak.
@Xstream Just that push ups dont result in your whole body mass pushing vertically down on push bars. There is alwas horizontal force (when your feet rest on the floor it resembles a lever) and when you do "tricks" like one handed push ups where the force is on one side only.
@scrumtrelescent7 I was cringing as she was doing that, with the angled bars and the one arm raise. Did not look comfortable at all.
@Xstream
i agree, it even wraps around the side. gee whiz engadget, somebody piss in your Cheerios?
Looks like gravity holds it in place to me. I am not nearly aggressive enough with my pushups to make this thing hop off the balance board. Now if you told me that the handles were flimsy plastic prone to breaking, well then I would be more concerned.
@RandomGuy
I agree. If you're the type that does pushups aggressively enough to knock this off, you... probably aren't the type that plays Wii Fit for exercise anyways.
Does look pretty solid in the video. The sides come down over the edge of the board so slipping off seems unlikely unless the plastic is so thin it would break. Same for the wells the bars fit in. Engadget actually try one of these? As far as wat's wrong with regular pushups? Broke my hand in a motorcycle accident and can't put my hand flat anymore. Gotta have bars, and this look like more fun than just grunting and counting.
@sejohannsenearthlinknet
But if it does slip or break, you'll have a classic face-plant....
@Canucker
Make sure the camera is filming you at all times, just in case.
@Smart People Play Tuba
Actually, you could use said video in your lawsuit against CTA!
"Your honor, CTA is responsible for my client's broken nose. Here's the proof!"
See called the trainer a mii. See needs to learn her stuff before see starts selling stuff.
@Spiky haired boy Yeah she called it mii...that's what wii avatars are called, and that's what she was going to watch.
This seems like a honest and safe to use product, like Xstream I also don't see why Engadget made it look so bad.
I don't understand. How can Mario come out of the tube if you block the opening? Or is this a way to skip levels?
I still don't see why I would need a push up bar or Wii Fit to do push ups.
@Arsic
You might need a push up bar for the ergonomics if you have bad wrists.
@LloydChiro And in that case, Perfect Pushup ftw!
I agree that it's a bit cheesy and not worth $25, but what's with all the hate about its safety? By the looks of it, it wraps around the entire board fittingly. Therefore, the only way it would simply pop off while in use is if the user applied a vertical force (not sure how that would even be possible while doing a pushup) or put all their weight on one edge, which shouldn't accidentally happen.
The board isn't going to slide off from forward, backward, or side motion because it would catch on the corners before doing so.
@SalvationXXIII I belive you mean a horizontal force... A pushup is 70% verticle force, but I do agree, it shouldn't pop off.
@Killer9013 Having only the corners covered leave the potential to slide off with moderate horizontal force. Foam isn't helping anything lol
Push ups for wii fit for a broad shouldered person like me has always been hard because the balance board is not wide enough. This contraption doesn't look like it would help either. They need to make something that comes out wider than the balance board itself.
Looks like it works well to me, now sure what Sean hollister finds weak or unsafe. Pretty lame attempt to bag on a wii perf.
Julie... call me
I thought he said he was going to check out her push up bra?
Too bad, it would have made the video much more interesting.
it... it...
What... did they use the first take?
sorry, I couldn't get past the douchey facial hair... What was this thing again?
"CTA Digital"
Real digital tech huh
I don't see the avatar craning their neck and trying to watch a TV screen while their doing their moves...
And wow, what incredible acting!
I would buy this piece of s**t under one condition, if the girl comes with it for a pre and post workout massage sessions. it would be a plus if she takes a nice warm bubble bath with me as well but it is not a must.
you see.. I am not that difficult.
:)
i really dont see the advantage of wii fit to begin with...
That's not a Mii or an Avatar that's your trainer.
I know what a Mii really is is because I have my Wii since launch.
Anyway I just stick to ghe regular unmodded balance board thanks.
Moms everywhere will love this.
Guys who really care about fitness will just buy real bars.
My main problem with the wii fit board and doing pushups is that the board is not wide enough for me to do them comfortably. This makes the area between your too arms even shorter I'll pass. I already just grab the sides of the wii fit to do push ups.
I don't know. Wii Fit push ups wreck my wrists pretty bad and this accessory looks pretty decent. As others have pointed out, your body weight should be sufficient to keep the bars in place provided the plastic isn't brittle and the holes you put the bars into are deep enough.
I may actually buy one of these.
I was really hoping the bar would break on the guy, not even going to lie. That would have been hilarious!
Nothing is going to be more secure than that guy's chin strap!
Buy a Perfect Pushup and use it on your balance board. Costs slightly less and can be used alone.
go do some real pushups >_>"
and maybe some real running..
and maybe see a real trainer.
