Let's get this out of the way right up front: the estimated number of iPads sold in the first 72 hours is nowhere near official. And if the numbers hadn't been scraped together by a well known amateur Apple analyst who regularly trumps the pros then we'd be skipping the fruits of his black magic algorithms altogether. Nevertheless, Daniel Tello (aka, Deagol), has applied his proven approach of extrapolating Apple web order numbers to come up with a 120,000 total for first day iPad sales that slowed to 152,000 after 72 hours (not including iPads reserved for pick-up). Tello told
Fortune, "My best guess, although very tentative given the early stage and few data we have so far, would be that they hit the 1 million unit milestone by the second week after it ships." For those keeping track, it took the original iPhone
74 days to hit 1 million. Quite an accomplishment if these numbers pan out (and that's a big if!) considering that only
3 to 4 million tablets are sold globally each year.
A question for the Apple Haters. Had you ever own an Apple product? The way I see it most haven't and just trash apple because of ignorance. Anyway this will get down-ranked in split second.
@HighestRanked2 a lot of people have ipods--even apple "haters." this is just silly
And that's over 150,000 dumbass people I have no desire to associate myself with.
@kenny goo
Then why are you posting your dumbass comments in their thread?
@kenny goo
Yes, everybody's dumb except you.
Wow.
@HighestRanked2
...and when did I say the iPad won't be the most financially successful tablet to hit the market for the foreseeable future? You wanna stop assuming I'm saying something I'm not? I think it's stupid for someone to spend $500 on what is essentially an iPod Touch with a 10" screen, only 16GB of internal storage, little to no I/O, no multi-tasking, no flash, and the restrictions of only running what's available on the Apple regulated App Store.
I never said people still wouldn't buy the thing anyway. All those things aside, Apple always has nice looking and nice feeling hardware, and they tend to have a certain polish others don't, but that hardly makes it worth the money they're charging for it in my mind. Hence me referring to the 150,000 people who actually went out and pre-ordered this thing as "dumbasses".
@kenny goo speaking as a dumbass, every single Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone, whatever is still working to this day. I have the very first Mac laptop and it still works, I have a Cube and guess what, it still works and I still thinks it's one of the most efficient, small footprint computer ever made. Please answer this question honestly. Have you ever, EVER bought a product made by Apple? That's what's so great about a company that makes the hardware and the operating system. If the hardware has any issues, I call Apple, if the OS has any issues, I call Apple, but you know, I rarely have to call Apple. And when I get the iPad, it's going to integrate seamlessly with my iPhone, iTunes, Apple TV, Mac Pros and my MobileMe account. And yes all are designed to be ascetically pleasing to the eye. Ever see a Dell in the Museum Of Modern Art. I couldn't be happier than a pig in mud. Oh wait, I'll be happier come April 3rd.
@kenny goo
Yes, because everybody is exactly like you or else they're a dumbass.
Seriously, wow. Just wow.

This is my 4th Generation 20GB iPod Classic. One of the old ones with the monochromatic screens and the blue backlighting. It was purchased in April of 2005 for $299. During the Summer of that year, it randomly died on me. I didn't drop it, It didn't get wet, I didn't leave it out in the heat, it just died. It stopped working, would no longer sync with my computer (but would charge when plugged into the wall), and gave me this icon every time I tried to use it:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1373?viewlocale=en_US
I brought it to an Apple store, they looked at it, told me it was busted, and handed me a brand new one out of the box since I was within the industry standard 1 year warranty. I went back to using it, though eventually stopped and it was replaced by my PSP, then PSP Slim, and now my Zune 120. While the iPod still works now, it did die on me. This is the only Apple product I have ever owned.
While it broke, I wouldn't consider myself an unhappy customer, since they quickly and easily replaced it for me when it died, and at the time it was a great product that I was very happy with. While I think the Classic, Nano, and Shuffle are overall overpriced today compared to their competition, the Touch is very nice. The hardware and the software are both fantastic, and the only thing that can even compare is the Zune HD. Though it's my opinion that whichever one you think is better is just up to preference.
The iPad on the other hand is just overpriced and undervalued in my opinion, and for the most part I think you'd be stupid to buy one. Is "dumbass" a little extreme? Maybe, but that's just my opinion on it. I don't care my PMP player or tablet is "art" or it has the same hardware and software manufacturer. If it's good, it's good. It's as simple as that for me.
@kenny goo
So what you're saying is that if people don't conform to your ideals and like the exact same things you do, they're stupid.
Just... just wow.
@kenny goo
You have to get your mind around the fact that some people actually use the product they buy. For instance, despite the supposed limitations of the iphone, every metric out there suggests it is the most heavily used product by their owners. It registers the heaviest web traffic usage, heaviest online photo/video upload, heaviest 3rd party app usage...etc etc.
Apple products are built around people who will use them, not stare at the specs. I've owned around a dozen smartphones in the last 8 years and also probably the highest speced netbook in the Vaio x on the market today. None of these come near to the sheer usability of my iphone none. An iphone like device with a 10 inch screen is a perfect product for casual web browsing, emailing and even working with presentations. The fact that it will have great AV capabilities is a given. The other products by converse have a lot of specs but very poor real AV capabilities.
Once you focus on usage and less on specs you'll see why people love Apple products. I even tried out a Zune HD. Compared to an ipod touch it does very little. It has great specs but it just isn't that functional for most people - hence why they buy the touch. The touch has better apps, better online store (itunes) and better web browser. The UI while a subjective thing is as intuitive as it can be. The screen is lower resolution than the Zune but it does better with contrast, color and has longer battery life with video - this was based on a 1 week ownership I did with a Zune HD (I ended up returnining it). I also owned a Sony X series Walkman as well. It was in fact even better than the Zune in terms of hardware, but even worse in terms of software.
@jaffreywali
Again, I never said it wont be widely purchased or widely used. Why do you people insist on putting words in my mouth? All I'm saying is that while the aesthetics and polish of Apple products are nice, they are very expensive in many cases, and while some devices are very nice and stand up to the competition in a number of ways, it's my personal opinion that the low specs, restrictions, and prohibitive price of the iPad will allow far superior products to come out against it, even if the iPad still sells better to a less knowledgeable or tech savvy market due to the Apple brand strength.
I do have one thing to comment on though. Great AV capabilities? Are you referring to AV out or multimedia functions similar to a PMP like the Touch? If you're referring to the latter, then I agree, the iPhone OS is much better for multimedia then Android, Win7, or anything else in the tablet space. Though for AV out the iPad is a joke. The proprietary dock connector and lack of HDMI out is just another way for Apple to try and grab even more money out of their customers.
As for the Zune, again, it's up to preference. If you want a lighter, smaller, more portable device, a device with an OLED screen with a higher ppi and native 16:9 aspect ratio, an all you can eat music plan with the Zune Pass, FM and HD radio, high def video out, XNA games, and hardware that's arguably more powerful then the Touch, you get a Zune HD. On the other side of things, along with what you have mentioned there are many pros of the Touch and cons on the Zune. They're both fantastic devices and I largely think which you buy is left up to what you want to do with it.
@ Jack
Your condescending one liners and obvious flame bait aren't contributing anything to this conversation. I'll say this quite simply: fuck off.
checking the Number sold by the Number of orders placed does not take into account folks Like myself that ordered Two!!
I recently watched an episode of the Engadget show, looking at the audience everything became clear :-)
So much for the "iPad will fail" crowd.
"JACK" and "LAY" are trolls... the both of you nearly have 2K comments each that don't amount to s**t! I feel sorry for the both of you. Life is too short to be online 24/7/365. Smh.
@G33K3d uP
I'm a troll because I point out the stupid things that Apple haters say?
You've heard the saying "the truth hurts", right? Yeah, Apple haters are mostly stupid. You're not an exception, this isn't the first time I've responded to something idiotic that you've said.
Oh, and I have 1200 comments. If you're going to lie, at least make it believable.
Apple iPad no support from my side it doesn't impress me from the first look. I too agree with this funny comparison HERE
Wait until its available overseas to work out its success by sales
Hi people, everybody tells me I need Ipad. Can you tell me what for?
I will buy it then. Thank you for your help.
Best Regards.
@zviera The same reason you need an iPod touch: because its cooler than other pmps.
@clevername ...and it fits in your pocket... or not.
iPad: The Avatar of tablets.
So much for the recession.
Don't believe the hype
@andreb
Which hype would that be?
Congrats to Apple if it's real, shame on you liars if it's not!
no buy into this...
Wait... this would have to be the first time EVER the nerds on Engadget, and all the editors, were totally dead wrong.
Not.
@Wesscoast
The thing is, the nerds on Engadget aren't the ones actually buying stuff. Other people are buying stuff, the nerds here just have an opinion on what other people are buying
Wow. There really isn't a whole lot of hope left for humanity if there were that many people duped into buying the worst idea in decades. So many people just looking to follow the fruit blindly like lemmings and ignore the better technologies out there. Enjoy. "HEY look is that a cliff? That guy just jumped so I guess it's safe to do so!..." "Hey, this thing doesn't even multi taaaaaask!" (boom)
@Thor e
Sorry dude, some of us have looked out there, and most things out there look just like our laptops, with the keyboard replaced by a multi-touch screen. Not very exciting there. We are not looking for a laptop replacement.
@Thor e
"Windows still has a 90 percent marketshaaaaaaaaa~~~"
BLUE SCREEN
@Thor e c'mon, dude. How many pre-orders for the latest Gears of War game or Nexus One? People who like things like to buy newer versions of those things.
I have a particular use case for the iPad, which is why I bought one. I do a lot of on-site construction surveys and fill out FileMaker forms while walking around. Makes sense for me (with the fantastic FMTouch App!) For the general public, the value is yet to be seen.
But give Apple credit for trying to change computing. Computers have worked the same for almost 30 years. A desktop, a few windows, a mouse, a keyboard... Even tablets currently out now try to replicate that experience. Apple's trying something new, and we'll see where it goes. Everyone gave them crap for eliminating the floppy and parallel ports, and that seemed to work out OK...
@Thor e
I don't know what you mean by better technologies. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're idea of a better technology is one that has a bigger list of features than something else.
You probably love nothing better than writing down everything your new toy can do, and making sure your list is longer than the dude's next door.
Small penis much?
Can't even find my original comment...not even the downranked ones :/
Anyway what I said was there sure are a lot of apple fanboys, what I wanted to add was that I'll be probably be one of them. Yes, iFail.
my 2 cents : i like apple products, really, but this thing i don't know what it's for. i already have a phone with which i can listen to music and do a lot of stuff, if i want to work i need a laptop with at least a physical keyboard and multi-tasking, etc... so what is this thing for ? why should i buy this ? but really ?
... and also, I want to know how much apple are paying people to post adv. messages on this forum ^_^
yeah right...!!!
pre-orders from apple employees, their family members and some of their relatives...nice job...steve!!!
@tomasse , oh yeah sorry i forgot...and fanbois!!!
@tomasse
Just like all the fanboys who bought Apple TV?
Sorry you ain't got the $ to buy one, maybe when you grow up and get your 1st job you can join the consumer society!
@pukerocket probably just like those fanboys and you forget, apple employees, family and relatives...yeah!
Oh, and please continue providing me amusement on how well you know me and my life...mr.stranger...plus, i use €, not $.
$ is a currency used only for apple products and from apple employees, family memebers, relatives and fanboys...thank you!
@tomasse
no, it's selling like Hotcakes.
what idiots people are!
why on earth would you want this, other than to satiate your over indulged selves with a new "gotta have" gizmo which does nothing a 15 year old laptop couldnt do... oh, other than some pretentious apple eye candy... but that has no substance really, its all about suspension of belief and selling the religion to isheep. baaaaaaa.....
There's no winning with the whiners. If it doesn't sell well it's "see. Told you". When it sells well "see. Fanboys".
Apple has fans because they make awesome products. I also love Adobe's products. I used to love Sony's products, but then they had mp3 players that roll on the floor. Microsoft is fine, but they only really make an os. I'm not going to get excited over a word processor or mouse. google fanboys are hilarious. You're a fan of search and advertising. Golf clap for that one.
There's no other tech company with this many hardware hits.
Keep hating
