Microsoft's flavor of push notifications for Windows Phone 7 Series -- the so-called Microsoft Notification Service -- was just demoed using an MLS (Major League Soccer) app, and it fits in really well with the "Metro" UI motif. Notifications come in via an unobtrusive bar across the top of the display -- better than iPhone, and not unlike webOS -- and tapping them takes you into the app where you're presumably taken to a fuller view of the relevant information. The notifications are available regardless of whether the app is open, a model that mirrors Apple's and likely a heavy dose of foreshadowing that multitasking -- at least, multitasking as we know it -- won't be available. Check of pic of the notification bar after the break.
Pictures or it didn't happen :)
@CaptainPlanet True dat

@CaptainPlanet watch the keynotes online, they show it

MS doing the right thing in adopting the best available way to use notifications, as seen on the WebOS. Hope it does well enough as a replacement of Real-Multitasking.
But nowadays, even a slight similarity of an OS to the iPhone scares me. Don't want to see an Apple vs MS patent deathmatch. Though I believe the cross licensing b/w Apple and MS, which Nilay was talking about would prevent that.
BTW, Hurrah!!! the check-boxes are back.
@CaptainPlanet
What's with all the damn windows articles today? MSFT is Engadget's new love?
(n the same vein as typical responses found in most Apple threads)
@Kid Red people on rail against apple posts when there's no apple "event" that day (like when the apple store is down, seriously wtf, why not tell me when archos' web store is down too...). It's MIX, so extra MSFT posts are perfectly relevant.
@PedoJokerBear
HI BROTHER!!!!
@Kid Red Its MIX today and a lot of info that Microsoft has left out unitl now will be told today. It is tech news at its finest and many many people want to know these things since this may or may not be their next expensive purchase. If you don't like it then move on to the next article. Don't waste your time commenting in some random article.
@CaptainPlanet
maybe the apps just run the background without a dedicated way of managing open programs... like android. here's hoping anyway...
ya i saw it, real slick and not like a popup in the iphone :)
Has multi-tasking (or lack of) for WM7 been confirmed?
@Alz
I think Microsoft has reinvented the concept of multi-tasking on the mobile device into integrated apps, rather than switching back and forth between apps, they are running simultaneously inside the 'hubs', other than that, playing music in the background while doing other stuff on the phone has already been shown
Not yet, but I'd say that they probably might show something off during the summer of this year, sometime when nobody would expect it.
Expect the unexpected, in other words.
@Alz
This is a critical piece of information I need before I can make a decision on whether to purchase the HD2 or wait for a WinP7 piece of hardware. As it stands, it is possible that the HD2 running WinMo 6.5 will be more capable/versatile/powerful package than the new operating system running on hardware this fall/winter.
I am interested in everyone's take on the prospect of that being true.
@Alz The only way to be sure is to download the SDK and look for it.
@Alz
Take a look at this leak document on multi-tasking.

@Jake Root
"might show something off during the summer of this year"? Come on, you're delusional. First of all, let's establish that there is no such thing as a modern OS that doesn't multitask. Even iPhone multitasks. But WinPhone7 - as with iPhone before it - has simply decided to not make the APIs for multitasking available to developers, for performance reasons. What is it that you hope they will show in the summer? The code for multitasking ALREADY EXISTS. The fact that they launched without it shows their intention to not make it available, so what do you think will happen by the summer to change their minds?
@Alz "The notifications are available regardless of whether the app is open, a model that mirrors Apple's and likely a heavy dose of foreshadowing that multitasking -- at least, multitasking as we know it -- won't be available."
This could be true, but IMO this is a dumb way to analyze the situation. Ok, so given this scenario, multitasking is less likely? I'd say with or without this multitasking is just as likely, this is just a way that doesn't require to you multitask to get the alerts you need (therefore save processing power), hence a great feature with or without multitasking. That isn't saying the same thing as not multitasking, so this should be a feature in all multi-tasking phones and fartphones (fake-smartphones).
Sounds much more efficient!
I love it, not only does it look fluid and sensible, but it's also unobtrusive in a way that you can ignore it and it goes away!
Send me a Windows 7 phone with the ability to do push notifications or it didn't happen!
Dear Microsoft,
You Are Killing!
Yours,
Everybody
@Mack Stone
Yeah.... No.
We saw what you did and it sucks.
Sorry.
@Mack Stone
Well, I'm a huge MS fan and I lost all interest in this. They are dumbing down the platform with this closed app store and no multitasking crap. Windows Mobile 6.5 in many regards is still better in my eyes, and I'm going to get an HD2. Copying Apple's strategy is NOT the right direction (I know that sounded really fanboy but in all honesty its not).
I hope now Apple haters will not say that its all apple news. The last page was ALL WINDOWS news!!! Are you happy haters?
@kyphem
It's all about even now. Yeah right ...
@kyphem
iPad this, new iPhone here, new Macbooks there. Soon Apple will reclaim its position in Engadget. :)
I wonder if Lenovo will have something like the Lephone with WP7.
@Ortant
Lephone. Sounds French.
@kyphem -_-
Steve Jobs just shat his pants!
@hdawggy
Apple Sauce?
@Azlo
I just l0led =D
Am horny for more lol
Any pics of the Courier?
I know it hasn;t been "confirmed" yet, but I'd much rather "real" multitasking.
@BigJayDogg3
idk man, i've got wm6.1 and it's got "real" multitasking, but the apps always start to slow down. if theyre able to pause the background app's cpu cycles and ram usage i could see this as being a good thing.
@silversun
Killing tasks isn't /that/ hard.
dammit I was SOOOOO Hoping tat Win7Pho supported TRUE multitasking.....even if it wasn't but 3-5 apps at a time...thats still good enough for me
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
Yeah. I think I'll be looking at Android for my future phones. I understand that Apple has been successful as a company, but does that mean that Microsoft has to copy/paste Apple ideas? Seriously, who wants another walled garden?
So sad that WinPho7Series won't have a task killer. Isn't that what we really want?
I want to see more devices!!
But so far, I'm shocked at how thorough Microsoft has been in implementing a complete set of features into WP7: No excuses, no bullshit.
Next: I want to see how office works on this beast
R.I.P. IPHONE
@Mister Warmth
That's a bold statement.
I think this will compete with Android and WebOS more than iPhone. iPhone has too high of customer satisfaction for people to leave to another brand.
@krische there are plenty of us iphone users that are waiting to jump ship onto these new phones. I popped onto a 3g for $100 to wait another year. I'm gone as soon as I can re-up. It seems I'm heading to Windows Phone now. If it doesn't live up I'm on a palm.
@Mister Warmth
Everybody keeps forgetting that the overwhelming majority of iPhone users are teens who buy iPhones because of the brand and the hipster pr of apple, and the older generations just doesn't care, everything they buy is usually a huge upgrade, hence they are happy as well.
The >real< competition is that of Android VS WinMo (haven't seen any WebOs in Europe, so I can't count them to being one of the "big boys", although it looks great, palm should deff. make more phones)
While I absolutely hate apple, there are a few things I have to say about the iPhone, first of all it can't die or be "killed" because, again, the majority have bought it for it's status and its marketing and secondly while not groundbreakingly innovative, it pushed the idea of having a phone that can be used for work, school and fun instead of some java games and cheesy "os", while it really isn't a smartphone it did boost the smartphone business significantly, I just hope Microsoft doesn't jump the iPhone clone bandwagon, like adding sliders instead of checkboxes (very nice to see them back on the pics)
Sony Ericsson + WP7 = Nirvana.............(LG/Sammy cant bring that feeling)..............HTC woud be better too.........
Unitasking??
So far, webOS and Android seem to be the only mobile OSes without many, if any, compromises.
@CRA1G
I would say WebOS had the comprise of only Mojo (javascript) apps. But now that the PDK is in public beta, anyone can write C/C++ apps for it.
So yeah, I would say neither have any real comprises. Both are very open, and in the case of Palm, homebrew is practically encouraged. Can't get much cooler than that.
