Nexus One shipments headed to Verizon, Vodafone soon?
Not much here in the way of verifiable detail but we're hearing that a CDMAified Nexus One is en route to Verizon (or Google's warehouses, anyway) from HTC's factories. The Economic Daily News (EDN) adds that Verizon will begin to "market" Google's superphone this month or in April at the earliest which lends some credibility to that March 23rd date tossed about previously. As for the Vodafone branded handset; EDN says HTC will ship it "soon" -- something we've been hearing since January.

Dear Motorola,
Hope you enjoyed your run with Verizon. Go back to being obsolete again.
Love, Google.
@Motlee Apparently you haven't used a Droid. When you root a Droid throw on a custom ROM running Android 2.1, custom kernel and overclock it, it is damned near identical in performance to the N1. Did I mention that it has a REAL keyboard as well? I am not saying that the N1 is a bad unit but it definitely doesn't obsolete the Droid in any way.
@Darkseider Man that totally rolls right off the tongue. Can you really see a Verizon sales person explaining all of that to a consumer on the fence between a Droid and the N1?
"You can buy the Droid and do X,Y and Z, or you can buy the N1 which does all that out of the box."
Secondly, the Droid is UGLY. The majority of consumers could give a rats ass about processor speed and RAM and which version of whatever OS the phone has. They care about what it looks like snuggled up to their faces. And in this comparison, the N1 looks like the prom queen to the Droids band geek.
@Motlee
Preach it!!
My brother has the droid and its the heaviest,square piece of shit out. He's ditching it for the droid when it arrives
F-Motorola
When I click on the Get Your Phone button on the Nexus One's homepage, it never retrieves the page, just times out. All of the other pages seem to work. Could a refresh be going on?
Anyone else seeing this?
@steel Loading fine for me.
So is this going to be another ridiculous situation where you HAVE TO buy the phone sight-unseen from Google's online store??
That would be a very dumb move.... if so, then be prepared to sell a TINY fraction of the number of phones that Apple has sold.
@Hazdaz I wouldn't be too sure of that. With the Eris and the Droid being VERY popular phones people now know about Android. Tell them this is a 3.7" version of the Eris with a faster processor and newer version of the OS and it may just sell like hotcakes. Time will tell.
@Darkseider ...until the Incredible hits stores. With the Incredible's confirmed specs, having them in stores will eat into Google's sales - BIG TIME. I mean, on the one hand I hate it - I would normally jump at the chance to stick to Big Red in support of any kind of open sales structure Google might propose. On the other hand, my NE2 comes up in May around the time of the Incredible's rumored release.
@InspectorEngadget correction: "stick it to Big Red". -1 for after-the-fact post editing.
So is ti worth waiting for this one or should I get a Droid?
@m854 Depends on how much patience you have and you're personal preferences. The Droid when rooted and OC'ed is nearly identlical to the N1 in performance plus it has a keyboard. The N1 can and should be rooted. Although performance increases wouldn't be as drastic on the N1 with it only OC'ing safely to 1.1 Ghz. They both run Android 2.1, can run a custom kernel and custom themes. The screen on the N1 has better color saturation due to it being an AMOLED. The Droid has a physical keyboard the N1 doesn't. All in all both very excellent phones. Just comes down to what you want.
@Darkseider
How's the readability of the Nexus One's display outdoors? I think the Engadget review said the screen wasn't bright enough.
and OF COURSE... Sprint doesn't have it
This doesn't make "Sense". Why would shipments be going to Verizon Wireless, when it is only going to be sold online by Google? And why would Verizon Wireless "market" a phone that they are not selling? Tmobile didn't "market" the Nexus One, as they didn't sell it either, and I don't think that Tmobile got shipments, because they have yet to sell the phone.
@The One Simple. The post says, "(or Google's warehouse, anyway)" so the N1 isn't necessarily going to Verizon's stores. As to why Verizon would promote a phone they don't sell - Verizon doesn't primarily sell phones, they sell plans. As an N1 with CDMA would keep you from going to a GSM carrier, they are making their money on the fact that you will be spending $XX.xx per month for your plan with an additional $29.99 per month for unlimited data, which they require for all smart phones. In the end, Verizon is doing this for the same reason any corporation does anything - it makes them money.
Verizon need to log the ESN codes off the phones. Its probably why they need to ship to Verizon.
@LowSky
LOL. HTC can just send the list to Verizon. Do you really think HTC physically sends the phones to Verizon, Verizon employees open the packages, record the ESNs and then ship it to Google? :D
@LowSky
That is the stupid f'n comment ive seen on Engadget in a while. Thanks for the laugh
I'm wondering if their doing any changes to the software so Verizon doesn't have the same issues that Tmobile had.
At least give me more Speed, Ram and Internal Storage.
Is there going to be any way to use upgrades to get this phone? I'm on a shared plan and don't really feel like signing a new contract just to get the N1 - I'll just wait for the Incredible if thats the case
The one thing that's really making me consider the Nexus One over another Android phone (for example, the Incredible) is the fact that you know Google will always support it with the latest updates.
I'll still have to wait to see how they set-up the pricing structure on Verizon, but the upgrade factor is a huge plus in the N1 column.
Fail Fail Fail.... First off, Verizon caters to a much larger business minded market then the other carriers! There is no way these people are going to buy a device with out trying it! All u people talking about android invasion, just relax! There's room for everyone to play nice. Apple is just to large to slay, even for google or Android. U wanna see a big release, come back around June/July.....the 4th iPhone is going to be some specticle! IMO, Vzw and google should have went with a big instore sell. And this thing should be getting marketed right now. It's not going to be as huge as the Android followers think!
@Sean76
Business minded market? Verizon is the largest network, I don't think there is any way of generalizing their subscribers. If you're saying Verizon's advertising is aimed at businessmen, have you by chance seen the Palm Pre Plus ad for moms?
Now as for the next generation iPhone, I don't think it's going to be anything revolutionary, the changes are most likely going to be little things such as customizable backgrounds like on the iPad. If you think "Apple is too large to slay" then can you explain why they are suing HTC? Android is gaining market share, and they are scared. If they had some revolutionary interface waiting to be unveiled with the next iPhone, I doubt they'd be as scared as they are making themselves look.
While I somewhat agree that they won't attract as many people with an online only strategy, that hasn't been confirmed yet. If you read the article, you would know that no one knows whether it will be sold by Google or by Verizon yet.
What no one is talking about is has Google been successful in getting Verizon to change its pricing structure.
Will the CDMA Nexus One be available to be purchased unlocked directly from Google? Will a cheaper plan be available for those who purchase it unlocked?
Verizon's entire pricing structure is based on phone subsidies, required data plans, and 2 year agreements. Will they accommodate unlocked phones on cheaper plans, since a subsidy is not needed?
It's amazing how I keep reading news stories about the Nexus One being released on Verizon, but the real news is whether Google will be selling the phone unlocked, and Verizon will be offering cheaper, no-contract plans, like T-Mobile Even More Plus plans.
That's what Google is really trying to achieve here!
@Sean76: Do you by chance own an iPhone?
On topic, I am wondering as well how they are going to do the upgrades. The second poster here someone(sorry forgot name) mentioned that you will get an upgrade for buying the phone. So it might be an introductory offer to everyone since you might have to go through Google and not be able to get the phone right there in the store.
I hear that there was some issue with T-Mobile's Nexus One sign-up where Google forced you to get a fresh contract to get the subsidized phone price. I'm free for a new contract, but on a family plan -- will there be any problems with me signing up for another two-year contract, on a family plan, come the 23rd (or whenever it comes out)?
need 1 year contract pricing please. Either that, or get the Incredible
Wait...........The the Incredible is being released by Verizon Wireless and no one cares about google, anymore.
Great news, I know about 5 people waiting for this. They are going to be *very* happy they waited.
Not sure if anyone has picked up on this yet, but, the article says that HTC is shipping these N1's to Verizon. This could mean SOLD IN STORES ???
@JRUN4
Sorry, i totally posted this before reading some of the comments on the second page where people addressed this question.
Getting this phone on release date!!! yeyeyey!
Does Vodafone operate on the same 3G bands as AT&T? I want my AT&T Nexus One.
Come on Vodafone Germany
I'm waiting out here!
I think I have to buy the N1 and buy it from Google, and buy the VZW version. I think I have to do this to support Google's promotion of phone sales without going through carriers. The bigger that market gets, the better off we'll all be.
So, it didn't come out after all.
I'm glad I asked an acquaintance who's worked at the store for 3 years. Helped me decide to buy my Droid for 75 bucks.
