Zero watch concept perfects the minimal timepiece
Unless you're a fan of high-tech jewelry, few things are as irksome as an overblown wristwatch design (we're looking at you Tokyoflash). While a binary timepiece will certainly up your geek cred, it's not very useful for providing at-a-glance information. Robert Dabi's Zero concept above, however, remains simple, beautiful, and amazingly enough, useful, all that same time. Practical too if he can coax a batch of round LCD displays into a production run. More pics and video after the break.

Possibly the most useful case of vertigo I've ever had.
@Dante of the Inferno wow now see this is very useful they almost have it with this design. considering watches are fashion casualties, and this still looks exactly like the shape of a watch. but its looking more like a bracelet. i dont know if i dig the 2 movers. i think they could go with three.
@emopoops Agreed! It would be nice with a seconds mover in the centre
@Dante of the Inferno
Since when are watches fashion disasters?
@Abuzar1 Since when did asking for time became so complicated?
@TypeEE
It's not about time anymore. They aren't fully functional pieces; analog watches would be much more accurate than most expensive watches. It's more like art/fashion now.
Neato!
Awsome! That's the future right there.
@Abacus
Bah, way to throw my education off track.
You mean to tell me that the Big Curve is the Little Hand, and the Little Curve is the Big Hand..?
@FORDY
The bold interior line is the hour hand, yes. But like a traditional hour hand, it's actually of a shorter radius than the minute hand. So it really depends on what you mean by "bigger".
@Abacus
Yu're so wrong dude; next year (or more probably next week) this monstruosity will be justly forgotten while my Breitling Aereomarine Chrono, which has been on my wrist since graduation 12 years ago , will still be a cherished collector's item in the next century.
want not sure why but its damn sexy watch!
People late for work and appointments everywhere because they can't read their watches, joy! Pretty though.
@c0z or bcause they have them upsidedown
Designed something like it for some Swiss watch company's (can't remember who) competiton back in the 90's and missed the deadline. Ahh well
btw anyone noticed the uptick in articles on clocks and watches on engadget? I think it's their new fetish
Awful design: forcing the user to add an extra decode step in order to adapt its function to their design narrative.
The function of the device (time display in this case) should not be subsumed by the design. Period.
@motorolo - oh please. The function follows form paradigm has been used for watches for ages. And anyway, it's not like deciphering the time on this watch is rocket science - it's actually completely obvious & straightforward.
And anyway - there's an endless number of conventional watches for you to choose from. Is ignoring the ones you don't like really that hard?
@motorolo
One flaw in your logic. Who would buy an ugly watch?
Yeah, the time is easy to ready alright... but how do I change the time?? I can't read German on that website...
As nice as that looks, you'll never be able to tell what the exact time is.
@Atkins
And your boss. "No sir, I am in fact 4 hours early to work!"
No buttons? How do you set it, or change for Day Light Saving?
@Junyor Mynt I'm guessing something similar to mobile phones which auto update depending on where you are. And auto light adjustment as the sun goes up/comes down
@Junyor Mynt
Are there no radio controlled clocks in your home country?
The designer is German, in Germany radio controlled watches are very common, so there is no need for any buttons, since the time updates automatically
If the battery dies will they send me a refurbished replacement?
@Devin
Yes for a service fee of $99 !
I love the design.. thinking different colours as well. Only thig is, how would you know which way up you'd put it on?
@toff74
by looking at the rear before putting it on ;)
@toff74
Or they could install an accelerometer in the thing... in addition to radio-controlled time... IT JUST WORKS!
where's the prototype?
@cashclientel
nowhere :) if you, or anyone else can help me with something like that, feel free to contact me..
I want this... 'nough said.
Really nice idea. Not totally sold on the watches design itself, but as long as the price is right i wouldn't mind to get one of these as "not in a work watch".
Thought i would want to have some marks example every 15min or something similar.
"HUNNY? What time is it!?"
--- "Its a squiggly past the bigger squiggly my dear"
Cool minimalist design, but I'd much prefer a mechanical watch
@Luffy
Actually, it is a mechanical watch, with 2 rotating discs!
I found the idea close to the existing Fossil S+arck - O-Ring Watch
Time is but a mere loading icon.
Beautiful. It would be even better with an e-ink display -- like the design was printed / etched onto the bangle.
Mark
Pretty, but I don't want to have to analyze my watch every time I want to know what time it is.
Also, who wears a watch anymore?
Everything has a clock built-in nowadays.
@zero1221
exactly why it doesn't really matter if any one can tell time on this. it's for you to look cooler than the next guy. most of the people i know and i wear watches to look good, and use our phone to tell time.
I like it, but can't help thinking of a flushing toilet!
I need a wee...
... or should I say, time for a wee
This is a old concept, just look here: http://www.timension.com.br
This is such a beautiful design - the worst part about it however, the fact that you can't physically buy one. Yet.
I'd love to own one. For novelty alone :)
@iPhaze Non-existence is no barrier to praising a product at Engadget, iPhaze: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/microsofts-courier-digital-journal-exclusive-pictures-and-de/
@TheSeanWilson
I know alllll about that kind of frenzy inducing courier nonsense. I would sooner this watch come out and have others say: 'Oooh, shiny' at my new toy than pull a courier from my overly sized pocket :P
But this isn't the issue here - someone needs to give this guy heaps of money to produce a prototype of this thing and then get it to market. I'm sold.
3:30? That looks more like 4:30 to me. Some little ticks for every hour would be very helpful.
@trevorno : Or a color change.
@John Stracke
Yes that would look sick if the colour changed every hour different shades of blue or something.
