Cowon J3 PMP looks cool in its brushed metal case
Hot on the heels of giving our opinion on Cowon's (relatively) big-screened V5 media player we have some news on the next player in line from the company. It's called the J3 and, while Cowon has officially acknowledged its existence, its specifications have only been unveiled thanks to what looks to be an internationally coordinated effort on behalf of gadget lovers everywhere. The J3 is said to have a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 272, pulling content from 4, 8, or 16GB of internal storage -- content that can also be routed to a TV. There'll be Bluetooth to pump tunes wirelessly and a new metal case that's said to improve the quality feel of the player. That, of course, we won't know about until we can feel one of the things, and according to the company some folks will be able to do just that before the month is through.

Make a WP7S phone with that look Cowon and it will be a hit !!
@smover
Yeah, super-sized bezels are totally making a comeback!
Zune HD FTW!!!
@Gabanagirl0192
ROFL, Zune HD??? Are you srs? It's restricted as hell in functionality and it's got an underpowered arm 11 CPU...
My Nexus pwns it in every way. ^_^
The Nexus and the Zune are two totally different devices silly!
@Gabanagirl0192
They aren't that different... Nexus can be used as a PMP, it pretty much replaced my still beloved walkman. They are only different in the fact that the nexus is much more superior than zunehd. :P
That reddot design award logo looks like AT&T's and Verizon's love child.
@Mr Blurrycam haha.
I sure hope there's an SDHC slot in there somewhere...mini or preferably full size. Why why why won't someone make a decent and RECENT PMP with a card slot? I know the D2 has one but its a blocky SOB. Ditch the 4 and 8 GB versions altogether too. Make it START at 16GB and get some of your dollars back. Then if you threw in a card slot, it would balance out nicely...
4 and 8 GB for a 2010 media player is so retro...shape up!
@Chaosdivine Yep. I still have my D2 with its 2gigs and 8GB SD card. Started looking for a replacement with more internal memory, but with a card slot and I haven't seen anything really satisfying enough to make a move. It sucks that no one ever seems to put SD/microSD card slot on their PMPs anymore. :(
@Chaosdivine Ooh, panties... Oh, wait a... DAMN YOU LAMP!
Who on earth ships a PMP with a decent screen with only 4GB of storage these days? Seems a little silly, considering you're supposed to be able to watch the odd movie/television show on thaws devices as well as listening to music et al. Still, the design looks quite beautiful - very understated, but elegant.
@meeku I'd love a player that had 4 gig of onboard storage if I could augment that with an SD slot... V5 has one, this must too. I haven't ever bought an iPod because I of no SD slot... no replaceable battery is kind of tempting fate as well. But this player looks slick - if it had android to function as a good substitute for an iPod touch, I'd be in.
@hated one
Pretty much _anything_ can beat an iPhone or iPod at PMPing, including most cheap phones. PMP stands for personal media player. Apple devices can play about 3 media formats and that's it. Forget about AVI, FLAC, etc. Plus you have to use iTunes just to copy over some content.
Now browsing, maps and various apps are nice to have, but they are not strictly PMP features so you're comparing apples to oranges here.
@hated one
will the iPhone beat my toaster at browning bread to a crisp golden brown? Will it beat my vacuum cleaner at picking up those asthma causing mites and bugs? Will it beat my coffee mug at holding my daily injection of caffeine?
See how this is a silly way to compare objects that are for totally different things?
What, no Wifi? In March of 2010, your device can't really be a multi media device without internet browsing or web apps. This Cowon may have cut the mustard in 2002-2005; now, not so much.
Sure, you can say 'What about the iPod nano?', but Apple isn't asking for what Cowon is charging for this device. For the same price you can buy an iPod Touch or a Zune HD or a Sony Walkman with a browser and streaming media. The Sony has a Slacker application.
@Johnny Tremaine
go play with you iToy and let the grown ups listen to the unrivaled sound of our cowons ;)
@fokka
Unrivaled sound? That placebo effect sure is effective.
@Johnny Tremaine
We do not know if the player has wifi yet and we do not know the price either. Regardless if it has wifi, Cowon players typically have features other PMPs do not have such as outstanding format support and amazing sound quality (much better than the Zune HD or iPod Touch). I will have to wait and see the full spec list before passing judgement.
Cowon make pure 100% media device. They are like the only device that focus at that, this day other device has wifi and browser but all those gave you poor battery life, cowon has 2-3 times battery life than other player.
what has this over the s9 except for the metal case? its not even available in 32gb...
@fokka
Right now it appears they have the same specs, however I would like to wait to see if the player has wifi, flash 8 (or even 9) along with other upgrades.
@hated one
Shank is still here and still trolling posts about Cowon with his crappy grammar?
"Can't even beat a cellphone when it cones to pmp."
Considering absolutely zero of what you posted has anything to do with the traditional PMP and the Cowon is better at every traditional PMP aspect than the iPhone I would have to say you're a tool who has no clue. Then again I think everyone already knew that from your previous comments in Cowon posts.
omg enough with the measly 16gb crap. the hardware looks good, but come on. 16gb will run out of space the moment i put just my music on it! Hey Cowon can we see a 64gb version of the s9 or this j3 to compete with the iPod touch 64gb please.
Wow, that is awesome. It looks like a metal finished version of my very own COWON s9.
Oh god, if they bump that spec up to 32GB like they did after the s9 was released, I'd be all over this. Here's hoping they bumped up the processor as well, to make the animations smoother. Oh god...I want it now!
@Prevacator
The player really do not need another processor (the S9 has a dual core 500 mhz one). What they need to do is upgrade the version of Flash the player is emulating (or make their own OS).
I can't wait for the full specs. It seems it would be hard to improve on the already fab S9.
I love my 32 GB Samsung P3's file support. I really wish it had more storage though.
@hated one
I am replying to your comment so others can see what Cowon players have to offer (using the s9 as reference since it is arguably the J3s predecessor):
-Best sound quality (tied with Sony X-Series Walkman): If you care about sound quality, and customizing the equalizer, this the Cowon S9 is outstanding
-AMOLED screen: Videos and picture look gorgeous on the player, along with album art.
-Flash content as Apps: The S9 has flash 7, and hopefully the J3 will have 8 (or even 9) which means that almost every application and game made with flash 8 or before, can be used on the player (think about all of the flash games on the internet). Even better, they are all free.
-The player accepts a wide array of formats including mp3, ogg, FLAC, APE, WAV, along with video containers such as MKV and XVID.
-Customize UI: On the S9, you can download (and create your own) UIs made by different users to better customize your experience (as opposed to just moving icons around)
-I cannot say if the player has maps or "serious browsing", or mail since I do not know if it has wifi or not, however all three of those can easily be done if their is wifi.
hey people, do you see that icon in the right upper corner? Is this a photo app?
