Tired of
waiting for Verizon and dissatisfied with a series of recent
buggy leaks, the fine folks at
XDA Developers were determined to trade their Cupcake-laden Droid Eris for a more toothsome Eclair on their own terms. Yesterday evening, it seems they finally achieved their goal, though not without a caveat or three. If you're still running the stock Android 1.5, it's a simple matter of dropping a ZIP file onto your SD card and restarting your phone; if not, you're completely out of luck. Rooters warn that the hack won't work on phones that have already been flashed to that aforementioned Eris 2.1 leak, and that they haven't yet figured out a way to restore
any non-1.5 phones back to factory default. If hacking isn't your daily bread, proceed with caution --
Sense UI may be fancy and all, but chaining your phone forevermore to an unsupported OS just ain't worth it. See what an Eris Eclair looks like after the break.
I did it.
@fourzero40
is this where you start smoking a cigarette?
I care about my Hero more than that.
2.1 is nice but if you're device can't be flashed back to any rom you like (a la nexus one or G1), don't do it, wait.
There's always some niggles with ported ROMs and I'd hate to be stuck on any of the ones I've tried on my Magic (myTouch).
The fact that people even have to do this, is a major turn off for me from android. Its so fragmented and stale at this point, that I am personally done with the platform.
I will not buy a phone, be promised updates that never come, and then have companies such as HTC with hold the drivers so xda can't get the latest software working
Thats the only reason.....
@Hydra
This is the actual leaked official 2.1 ROM for the Droid Eris. So, it's pretty certain that the 2.1 update is coming. Not to mention the fact that both Verizon and HTC have confirmed it.
@Hydra
You don't have to root.
@Hydra
by the way WHO exactly promised u updates?
@Hydra - Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux. It's a fragmented world full of wonder and support forums.
@VS Dude
Yeah welcome. Welcome the need to search for your own fixes instead of the fixes being offered by the very company that supplied you the OS.
@Hydra
This is a BIG issue with me as well- beside the fact that I'd have to succumb to Google and their privacy leeching. No thanks- the Goog just ain't for me.
@lv2bll54 Operators promise Android updates all the time. Rogers here in Canada does it for their HTC Magic. I agree with Hydra on this. I want an Android device because I'm very interested in the platform, but if hacking it is the only way to get the latest version right away, I'm turned off by that. By this platform being "open source", the user should be allowed to customize it to their liking, including updating it when Google releases the newest version, not when the manufacturer/operator decides to put in little tweaks and release it themselves.
@Hydra
Same here. This type of stuff is why I just don't feel comfortable jumping into Android. It seems like every phone is either waiting on updates or being hacked to run different OS versions. If it were that great, there wouldn't be such a giant push to change everything so much. What I buy today might not be compatible with software 6 months down the road.
It seems companies are in a rush to sell you the hardware, but once you own the product you are pretty much cut off. Look at the HD2 (I know, not Android). Anyone buying that thing should know that you'll pretty much be on your own for the life of the device.
i already have the damagless rom that was ported to the hero via the eris dump, its remarkable how similar these phones are
About time, this phone was locked tighter than a female virgin living at home with her dad.
just wait for the droid to get 2.1
and we are all going to be happy
@RidEtHeLiGhTNiNg
You're late to the party my friend, I've had 2.1 running on my Droid for over a month now.

Root your Droid and try Simply Stunning ROM. It's excellent. 2.1 with Live wallpapers, multitouch/smoother browser and overclocking.
Hey - I tipped this yesterday afternoon and it's posted 12 hours later with no cred? At least throw me the "all who tipped" line.
My samsung moment gets no love...such a bummer.
@ThatDudeSolo 2.1 is already confirmed for the 1H2010, so given that it will be officially on 2.1 in 3 months or less. However if you're feeling adventurous by all means find a hacked ROM and flash away.
well, i have 2.1 from the leaked rom a couple weeks ago and...yeah im slightly sad. about to hit the forum and hope they are having MAJOR problems with the root (im such a sore loser).
I suppose you still can't dial via bluetooth?
if only it had been done sooner!
id rather wait for the Incredible!
